Does anyone have any insight into whether the BB really predates the RaspberryPi? That was a surprise to me.

I was surprised as well.

According to Wikipedia the release date of the original Beagleboard was July 28 2008. Raspberry Pi was released in February 2012.
RasPi came almost four years later!!!

I think that lots of people (including me) didn't hear about the BB until after the release of the RasPi. Hence the wrong assumption.

Shows again how important a good marketing is. One can only speculate, but the BB would most likely be still widely unknown without the RasPi,

The Beagleboards sold for over $100 while the Pi was $25-$35. Then again, you do get a better system - such as real gigabit Ethernet instead of something tacked onto the USB bus.

The BeagleBone was not "over $100". It was $89. And not gigabit. Fast (100) only. At least that's the case for the BeagleBone Black, and I'm sure for the earlier boards too.

But your point is taken. Competition is good. When the BeagleBone Black came out after the Raspberry Pi, it was priced at either $40 or $45. But it seems that was too ambitious. The Rev C BeagleBone Black was raised back up to $55 in return for no meaningful improved features. It has some more memory and more eMMC. Snort. So what.

BeagleBoard, not BeagleBone. Two different devices. GP said BeagleBoard, which did originally sell for over $100; you countered with BeagleBone, an entirely different device. To my knowledge, none of the original BeagleBoards had GigE, but this newest one does.
