Why Is Customer Service So Good?

As a consumer, my experiences are exceedingly pleasant. I don't just receive endless great products for reasonable prices, I routinely receive gracious, flexible service with a smile. It happens so often that I can't help but wonder, why is great customer service so common in our society?
