OnePlus' second flagship of 2017 picks up where the OnePlus 5 left off, while introducing a new 18:9 display and a low-light camera. Like previous devices from the manufacturer, the OnePlus 5T is all about delivering a flagship-class experience for a couple of hundred dollars less than the competition.

The highlight of the OnePlus 5T is a 6.0-inch Optic AMOLED display, which has minimal bezels at the top and bottom. Although the screen size has increased by 0.5 inches, the reduction in the bezels means the OnePlus 5T is roughly the same size as the OnePlus 5.

The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 835, and the spec sheet makes for some great reading. You get 16MP + 20MP cameras at the back, 16MP front shooter, 3300mAh battery with Dash Charge, USB-C, and a headphone jack.

You can pick up the OnePlus 5T with either 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage for $499/449/a^132,999, or get the model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage for $559/499/a^137,999.

Bottom line: The OnePlus 5T is a solid choice if you're looking for a phone with top-notch internals, clean software, and all-day battery life.

One more thing: The OnePlus 5T is sold as a single SKU globally, meaning all variants have dual SIM card slots.

Why the OnePlus 5T is the best

OnePlus is continuing to refine its formula for the affordable flagship with the OnePlus 5T, offering a phone that delivers top-notch hardware and uncluttered software at a price that's $200 to $300 lower than the competition.

The OnePlus 5T builds on the strengths of its predecessor, while adding a gorgeous new Optic AMOLED 18:9 display. The manufacturer trimmed the bezels up front, and moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device to accommodate the tall display. The full-screen panel on the OnePlus 5T brings the device to parity with the likes of the S8+ and the LG G6 (at least from a form factor standpoint), and the AMOLED panel offers vibrant colors with great viewing angles.

Round the back, the primary 16MP camera is augmented by a secondary 20MP shooter that kicks in at low-light conditions. Then there's Dash Charge, which is one of the best fast charging standards available today. With Dash Charge, you can get up to a 60% charge after plugging your phone in for just 30 minutes.

The internals are unchanged from the OnePlus 5, which means you still get the latest hardware available today in the form of the 2.45GHz Snapdragon 835. When it comes to the software side of things, OxygenOS delivers one of the best experiences currently available on Android. The user interface is similar to pure Android, but there are several customization options available to make the phone truly yours.

OnePlus 5T has the same great foundation as its predecessor, but you now get an 18:9 display.

OnePlus is also making things easier for itself when it comes to rolling out updates by offering a single global SKU of the OnePlus 5T. That means that the same model will be sold around the world, with no variances across regions. Selling a single SKU also means that all models of the OnePlus 5T offer a dual-SIM card tray, with both slots offering LTE connectivity. And that's awesome.

If you're rocking Bluetooth headphones, you'll be glad to know that the OnePlus 5T has both the aptX and aptX HD audio codecs - which deliver vastly improved sound quality over Bluetooth.

There are a few drawbacks with the device - there's no waterproofing, and you won't be able to use the phone on Verizon or Sprint. And while the design aesthetic may not be as alluring as the Galaxy Note 8, the OnePlus 5T retails for several hundred dollars less than Samsung's flagship.

Runner-up pickSamsung Galaxy Note 8

The variant of the Galaxy Note 8 sold in the U.S. comes with a single SIM card slot, but the international version has a dual SIM card tray. The international model is also powered by Samsung's own Exynos 8895, which has slightly better battery life when seen against the Snapdragon 835 version.

Otherwise, you're getting the same great 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display, which is the best of any phone available today. Samsung set the bar for display tech by investing billions of dollars in its display unit, and the results are clearly evident.

The Note 8 also comes with dual cameras at the back - a first for Samsung - with both sensors featuring OIS. Then there's 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage, IP68 certification, wireless charging, S Pen, and a 3300mAh battery. The international model runs up to $979 unlocked.

Bottom line: If you want the most feature-rich phone currently available and the ability to use two SIM cards simultaneously, the Note 8 is the phone to get.

One more thing: The international Note 8 works exclusively on GSM networks, so you won't be able to use it on Verizon or Sprint.

A large screen, big battery, high-end internals, and Leica optics - the $475 Mate 9 has it all. Huawei is yet to introduce the Mate 10 in the U.S. - that's likely to occur sometime next month - but a year after its debut, the Mate 9 continues to be a great device. The 5.9-inch Full HD screen makes it ideal for viewing multimedia on the go, and the dual rear cameras - a 12MP RGB sensor alongside a 20MP monochrome lens - combined with the Leica tuning gives the Mate 9 an edge in this segment.

The Mate 9 also offers global LTE bands, and the phone is compatible with over 1334 carriers in 217 countries. As it is a GSM device, it is limited to T-Mobile and AT&T in the U.S.

Bottom line: The Mate 9 is an all-rounder that delivers amazing value for money.

One more thing: The Mate 9 is the first phone to feature Amazon's voice-based assistant, Alexa.

Best budget optionHonor 7X

The Honor 7X is set to make its debut in the U.S. soon, but for now the phone is available in the UK for 269. Stateside, it'll go on sale for $199, $50 less than what the 6X debuted at. The aggressive launch price underscores Honor's intentions to break into the U.S. market, where it has seen limited success.

That's bound to change with the Honor 7X. The phone has a 5.93-inch FHD+ display with thin bezels, Kirin 659 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, microSD slot, 16MP + 2MP cameras at the back, 8MP front shooter, and a 3340mAh battery.

You also get a dual-SIM card tray, but LTE connectivity is limited to the first SIM card - the second SIM is automatically switched to 2G.

Bottom line: If you're looking for a budget phone that offers great value for money, the Honor 7X is a great choice.

One more thing: The Honor 7X should be available in the U.S. before the end of the year.

Conclusion

The OnePlus 5T is your best choice if you're looking for a future-proof phone with dual-SIM capabilities. The phone has a sexy 18:9 display, top-of-the-line specs, and a software experience that's one of the best available today. Support for global LTE bands means you'll be able to use the phone in most countries around the world, and with two SIM card slots available, you won't need to switch out your primary SIM card when traveling abroad.
