Laptop shutdown freezing and not switching power off.

Hi,
A new annoying problem is happening with my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad).
I run Debian unstable with Gnome desktop on my laptop.
When I shutdown or restart my laptop the process proceeds as normal to the point where the last message printed on the screen is "Reached target power-off" and then nothing happens. I then need to push and hold power button until power switches off.
I have searched through the log files looking for some clue, but nothing jumps out as being the cause.
I setup Systemd persistent logs to allow me to view log messages up until power off, but again nothing jumps out as being a problem.
Can anyone suggest some further debugging steps I could perform to uncover the cause of my problem?
