[SOLVED] Strange "incorrect login" error - Arch Linux

I am running the latest Arch linux. I have only root and one user. When trying to login as the non-root user I am getting "incorrect login" without a password prompt.
As soon as i type the username it immediately returns "incorrect login"
The user has a password.
Any ideas? Most stuff i have found while searching points to the user not having a password set.
Any help appreciated.
ETA: This is in a TTY terminal, as I use startx to start my windows manager.
