Google Is Finally Killing Picasa

story imageGoogle is finally killing off Picasa in favor of their more cloud based Google Photos. Picasa was a desktop application that allowed you to view and organize your offline photo collection.
As of March 15, 2016, we will no longer be supporting the Picasa desktop application. For those who have already downloaded this-or choose to do so before this date-it will continue to work as it does today, but we will not be developing it further, and there will be no future updates. If you choose to switch to Google Photos, you can continue to upload photos and videos using the desktop uploader at photos.google.com/apps
Will users move their photo collections to the cloud as Google hopes? Or is this just another attempt to push more computing applications from the desktop to online services?

Yes users will move photos to the cloud ( or rather most people that used picasa have already moved to photos), and yes this is an attempt to remove the importance of local systems to online services.

I am not keen on moving over a TB of photos to a cloud.Other than permanent assured backup what is the gain?I used to share photos with people online. Back in the dark old days when you coded HTML by hand.

Other than permanent assured backup
That is the biggest reason for most people. Keeping backups is tough.

You ask what the gain is. By not moving to a cloud-based service, you're denying some hard-working entrepreneur millionaire the chance to market to you.

My (quite old) parents haven't and won't. They use Picasa (the desktop application) only to organize and tag their photo collection, but they don't even have a google (or picasa) account and don't intend to. Backup is on two USB hard drives.

Hopefully, the desktop app will keep working "as is" for many years down the Windows versions line. Otherwise I'd be interested to hear from whoever tested other Windows applications doing a good-enough job at this (opensource, if possible, but not limited to)
