Texans' O'Brien declares Savage starting QB
With three words Tuesday, Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien ended any semblance of a quarterback competition.
The battle between Tom Savage and rookie Deshaun Watson came to a close during his press conference.
"Tom's the starter," O'Brien said, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
"Tom had really had a good camp. He's only thrown three incompletions in two games. He's got a really good command of the offense."
Savage entered camp as the favorite based on his three years of NFL experience and rapport with receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Yet Watson, the team's first-round draft pick, impressed in the preseason. He's passed for 281 yards and rushed for two scores in two games.
"Deshaun is a very, very good player who has a bright future in this league," O'Brien said. "Let's put the cards on the table, but Tom has been here for four years. The way we want to play, the style relative to getting guys lined up, protection points, route reads, putting guys in the right spots, Tom's ahead of Deshaun."
The Texans open the regular season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
