New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles announced Monday that Josh McCown will be the team's starting quarterback.

McCown beat out Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg for the job. Bowles added that he's yet to decide on the backup.

"(McCown) gives us the best chance to win right now," Bowles said.

The Jets had limited the veteran's snaps in practice and preseason games of late, seemingly to get a clearer view on how Petty and Hackenberg would handle first-team reps.

With that in mind, New York's decision to go with McCown, a journeyman, over the two younger options, speaks volumes about how each of them looked, especially Hackenberg, who was a second-round pick last year and is now in danger of losing his roster spot.

McCown will lead an offense almost entirely devoid of established talent. He will also be without top wideout Quincy Enunwa, who's out for the season with a neck injury.

Most believe the Jets will be among the worst teams in the league in 2017, so it would be a shock if they don't hand over the reins to either Petty or Hackenberg at some point if that's indeed the case.
