USB external drive problem with exFAT drives.

USB external drive problem with exFAT it says it will only work with Windows 10 and Windows XP. It warns if you reformat it will destroy the drive. It is an cheap 2 Terabyte one which works straight away with Windows but first opens a Word document which gives the warning.
I am using Linux Mint 19.2 and have other USB externals working OK but they were formatted in NTFS.
I have installed the recommended exFat utils
sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils linux-util
However the drive does make a beep when connected on a Linux Desktop. but it is not seen in files it is seen in Drive but says unknown system and when I use Gparted to examine it gives
Error fsyncing/closing /dev/sdg1: Remote I/O error
Any ideas or is this a hopeless cause?
