Report: Beckham eyeing $100M insurance policy if no extension reached by Week 1

Odell Beckham Jr. will consider taking out an insurance policy that could be worth more than $100 million in injury protection if he and the New York Giants don't agree on a contract extension by the start of the regular season, two sources close to the player told Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.

"(If a deal isn't done) by the regular season, he'll take steps to protect himself. (But) a new deal is preferable to adding insurance," one source told Robinson.

Beckham was hurt by a shot to his lower left leg during Monday's preseason game. While he escaped with just a sprained ankle, the incident could further motivate him to push for a new deal this offseason.

Such a policy for one season would cost Beckham around $600,000, sources told Robinson.

Beckham has two years left on his rookie deal thanks to the Giants exercising his fifth-year option. He has expressed his desire to be the NFL's highest-paid player and is at least reportedly expected to eclipse Antonio Brown as the league's top-earning receiver, possibly becoming the first wideout to earn a $100-million deal.

While the Giants have made it clear they want to lock up Beckham for the foreseeable future, they haven't made it a priority this offseason.

The 24-year-old is a bargain for the next two seasons, as he's set to earn nearly $1.84 million in 2017 and $8.46 million in 2018. New York could then further delay giving him a monster contract by way of the franchise tag.
