Goofing around with containers

Hi,
I am a newbie to Linux and a newbie to working with servers. I have been given two Dell PowerEdge R620 servers to play with, and I would like to set one up with Linux. This whole exercise is meant to learn a set of IT skills and get some experience under my belt when I want to start looking for jobs in 2 years' time.
I have been advised to give containers a try as it is generating a lot of momentum.
I will probably start of with setting up a Media server, as I am already running 3 media server applications on Windows, Plex, Kodi, JRiver, which all can be run on Linux as well.
Next I would like to setup a personal cloud server for sharing pictures with family overseas. To some extent I could already do that by giving external access to Plex and JRiver. Not sure if my internet connection will cope it, with large format pictures, 6Mps UP and 25Mps down, unfortunately that isn't going to get any better.
