Lost GUI on Rasp. Pi after installing 3.5" tft screen

I am working with a Rasp Pi 3B+.

I was working by connecting the HDMI output to my flatscreen TV. Everything was fine (well, there are other problems and I have another thread about them).

I purchased a 3.5" tft touch screen display. Snapped it into place and ran the instructions to install the driver.

Now when the system boots, it goes to text mode on the TFT. But I cannot get the GUI to run.

The only command I know is
Code:startxfce4I get a screen full of error messages. Same in the .xcfe4***log file.

Any ideas what got broken by installing the driver?

Are their other commands to manually start the GUI?

Why did it automatically boot to GUI before I installed he driver?

Thank you!

PS: I don't know if it is related but another problem associated with installing the TFT display is that now I get system messages randomly popping up on the screen. There are even times that I am in the middle ot typing a command and a system message just pops ups in the middle of it!

I assume these ordinarily get shunted off to somewhere else. Again, not sure what broke by installing the display driver.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=NZobXirjRW4:Oyc7h4POVJI:F7zBnMy latest?i=NZobXirjRW4:Oyc7h4POVJI:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=NZobXirjRW4:Oyc7h4POVJI:gIN9vFwNZobXirjRW4
