The NFL has been investigating domestic violence claims aimed at Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for over a year and vice president Stephen Jones isn't happy with the pace of its work. With weekly reports surfacing about when Elliott will or will not be suspended and for how long, Jones believes there is no reason the league cannot announce a decision by now."These things are tough for everybody. It's tough for the league. It's tough for the team. It's tough for the player," said Jones, according to ESPN. "At some point, you should be able to get the information in some sort of time frame that ... doesn't carry on like this particular investigation has."Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that the league has yet to make a decision about suspending the star runner, denying a claim by Hall of Famer Cris Carter that Elliott would be handed a lengthy ban within the next two days.Related: Jerry Jones expects decision on Elliott case 'imminently'"I would hope as a league, just like we do everything else, we look for ways to get more efficient and to do things in a better way," Stephen Jones said. "I'm not being critical. We're obviously in new territory when we started our own investigative team at the NFL level."Just like we do everything, we look for ways to improve it. Hopefully we'll be better at this when we move forward in the future."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

It's been six months since Brandon Marshall was released by the New York Jets, but former teammate Sheldon Richardson still holds a grudge against the Giants wide receiver.Marshall and Richardson traded direct and indirect shots with one another throughout their two-year stint as Jets teammates, but since they have parted ways, the 26-year-old defensive end has ramped up hits accusations.Related: Jets' Richardson rips former teammate Marshall: We're better without himOn Monday, Richardson continued his tirade against Marshall on "The Michael Kay Show," calling Marshall a drama queen, according to Connor Hughes of NJ Advance Media.

This is starting to get pretty ridiculous. While the New York Jets have little chance of being a competitive team this season, it's beginning to look like they will struggle to line up for every play of a 60-minute game, let alone for a full 16-game season. With reports quarterback Christian Hackenberg can't break a huddle properly and Quincy Enunwa, the only Jets receiver with at least 60 career catches, being down for the season, the team can't afford to take anymore steps backwards. It's a long season, especially if you're losing every week, and it's time the Jets start making moves before it gets even longer. While they can't necessarily save their season, here are a few suggestions for the Jets to become somewhat respectable.Trade with the Eagles for a receiverThe Jets' receiver corps was already the thinnest in the league before losing Enunwa, and now that he's out, scooping up a veteran free agent like Stevie Johnson or Vincent Jackson may not be a big help. However, the Philadelphia Eagles seem to have a surplus of young pass-catchers. Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews have reportedly been jostling for the starting receiver role in Philadelphia, and only one of them will get the job. Both players are still young in their careers and have showed signs of being quality receivers, though they have had their downfalls.Either would immediately become a starter for the Jets if traded for, and going by the NFL's typical trade values, the price tag would be much lower than their original draft positions. Keep an eye on that competition and let the Eagles know a trade partner will be available once they make a decision.Try out more veterans flyersWhen anyone notable gets cut from another squad, bring him in for a look. Regardless of position, age, injury history, recent production, or potential salary, give anyone who might improve the team a tryout.Even if it is just to kick the tires, it can't hurt to look for help. Don't get in the habit of signing everybody, but don't get lazy about looking under every rock for pieces that will help the roster and help keep the team together when things get rough late in the season. There are also enough possibly good free agents out there worth trying out before roster cuts. Gary Barnidge, Zach Orr, DeAndre Levy, Ladarius Green, Jairus Byrd, Sen'Derrick Marks, and Sam Shields are some of the available veterans who should be welcomed additions in New York.Cut the crapThe Jets need to stop pretending like they're going to be favored in any game this season, or that they might make the playoffs, or be a Super Bowl contender anytime soon. It's not happening. They know it. The players know it. The fans know it. Stop treating everyone like they're idiots and attack the problem openly.New York can start by trimming the fat off the roster. If a player definitely isn't going to make the squad, take the kiddie gloves off and cut him right now.Pretty much every player on the roster needs as many reps as they can get in training if they are going to help this squad, and saturating reps between isn't helping. Trimming down on the positions with a surplus of players and adjusting the training camp schedule for the team at hand is a necessary move.Position# of players on roster# of player needed*Cornerback95Safety64Defensive line127Linebacker137Offensive line159Receiver137Running back84Quarterback33*EstimatedThey don't have to make all the moves at once, but need to be honest about the roster at hand and make the appropriate adjustments. If the Jets go through training camp in the same fashion as the other 31 teams in the league, they're going to be as far behind everyone else as they all expect. With what many believe is the worst roster the NFL has seen in a decade, the Jets cannot approach the season like any other team. It's time to get creative. A season full of turmoil can age a team and its fans greatly - just ask the 2016 Cleveland Browns.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Branden Albert has reversed his course after announcing retirement last week, informing the Jacksonville Jaguars he's going to report to the team, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan.Albert has a base salary of $8.875 million in 2017 and would owe the Jaguars $3.4 million in signing bonus money if he stayed retired.Jacksonville acquired Albert in a March trade with the Miami Dolphins, where he had spent the last three seasons. Albert has been to the Pro Bowl twice in his career (2013 and 2015), and was expected to be the Jaguars best offensive tackle when he retired. The Jaguars are in New England this week practicing with the Patriots. While Albert did not accompany the team on their road trip, he met with the Jaguars over the weekend, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. There is no guarantee the Jaguars accept his return given his unceremonious retirement, but they cannot deny him from reporting to the team.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Johnny Football? Try Coach Football. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback has been hoping an NFL team will give him a chance to get back on the field, but if that doesn't happen, Johnny Manziel could be picking up a whistle and heading to the sidelines."I'd do something involved with sports. I can't get away from it," Manziel said at the International Football Betting Conference when asked what he would do if the NFL door is shut, according to ESPN. "I've had to ask myself that a little bit as of late over the past year, but at the same time I'd want to be involved in sports in some way, whether it's coaching, whether it's doing something like that. So I think that'd be my route."Manziel said he would prefer to coach at a college level when asked. The 24-year-old got a taste of coaching at an Elite 11 quarterback camp in February. The NFL has yet to give Manziel an opportunity to make up for the mistakes he made in his brief pro career. The New York Jets suffered a major blow to their crop of skill-position players Monday.Receiver Quincy Enunwa will be placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, a source informed ESPN's Adam Schefter, ending his season before it began, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Head coach Todd Bowles said he expects Enunwa to be out six-to-nine months after surgery, but the injury is not considered career threatening.Enunwa was projected to take over as the Jets' No. 1 receiver. Playing behind proven veterans Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker last season, Enunwa recorded career highs in receptions (58), yards (857), and touchdowns (4).Marshall and Decker were both jettisoned this offseason, however, leaving Enunwa as the leader of a receiving corps that includes unproven youngsters Robby Anderson, Charone Peake, ArDarius Stewart, Jalin Marshall, and Chad Hansen. The Jets' offense will now have to go through journeyman quarterback Josh McCown, weathered running back Matt Forte, and Bilal Powell, he of 20 career starts.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. I, myself did not call the police. When the police arrived they determined that there was no cause for any arrests nor was there any concern for my physical well-being," read the statement, acquired by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network."There were no arrests made, there were no criminal charges, I was not in any way physically harmed. Yes, we are going through a civil family court case and emotions are high, but I would like to make it very clear that Jarvis would never, ever do anything to harm me or anyone else. In his first appearance as a member of the Miami Dolphins, Jay Cutler answered questions regarding his health, desire, and reasons for giving up a cushy gig in a broadcast booth to restart his football career."A situation like this just doesn't come along very often," Cutler said Monday at his introductory press conference.Cutler cited his relationship with head coach Adam Gase, whom he's known since 2006, and the Dolphins' talented roster as reasons for cutting short his brief retirement."There weren't a lot of opportunities or jobs out there if they would have came up I would have taken, but this has got to be at the top of the list," he said.Cutler is a veteran of 11 seasons, the last eight of which were spent with the Chicago Bears. In that time, he's played in just two playoff games, and the opportunity to play for a team that reached the playoffs last season was too strong to pass up.Amid conflicting reports about who made the first call, the Dolphins or the quarterback, Cutler said he wasn't assured of the starting role."No guarantees. Just come here to help."His final season in Chicago ended on the injured reserve after he required shoulder surgery. The procedure took place in December and Cutler said he was cleared by March."I'm a little bit behind these guys, they've been going through training camp and stuff and I'm not quite there yet, but it won't take me long," he said of his overall physical state."The good thing is I play quarterback so I don't really have to be in that great of cardiovascular shape," he added in a rare glimpse of the type of humor he would have provided as a broadcaster.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Buffalo Bills have signed veteran wide receiver Anquan Boldin. It's a one-year deal worth $2.75 million with $1.25 million in incentives, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Boldin, who reportedly wanted to stay close to home in Florida and play for a Super Bowl contender, probably didn't meet either goal with this signing. He agreed to join the Bills last week, then backed out, then changed his mind again, according to Schefter.Boldin will add depth to a thin receiving corps that was set to rely on rookie Zay Jones as a starter opposite the oft-injured Sammy Watkins. At 36 years old, Boldin is on the verge of a major milestone. He needs 566 receiving yards - roughly what he recorded last season with the Detroit Lions - to jump over Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson into the top 10 in career receiving yards.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. It's official. Jay Cutler is a Miami Dolphin, and he'll immediately top the team's depth chart. The Dolphins lured the gunslinger out of retirement after Ryan Tannehill suffered a knee injury during a training camp practice last week.Speaking to reporters Monday, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said it's Cutler's team ahead of the 2017 season."He didn't come out of retirement to stand on the sideline," he said, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Such news may be disappointing to Matt Moore, Tannehill's backup, who wasn't afforded an opportunity to win the starting job. Gase said he addressed the team, however, and explained the circumstances."I was very upfront about everything," he said. "We have one goal, and that's to win."Gase has had to manage a multitude of emotions in the aftermath of Tannehill's injury. While offering his support, he explained to the now-sidelined quarterback that the team can ill afford to take a step back after posting a 10-6 season and reaching the playoffs last year. That necessitated the move to sign Cutler, a veteran of 11 seasons who played under Gase in 2015.Cutler joins Miami with 32,467 career passing yards, 208 touchdowns, and 146 interceptions. Moore, a career backup, has 6,077 passing yards to his name and 41 touchdown passes against 31 interceptions.Gase said no decision has been made on whether Tannehill will undergo surgery on his knee, according to Pelissero.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. When Jay Cutler was announced as the newest member of the FOX Sports NFL broadcast team in May, something about his career on the gridiron felt unfinished. Was Cutler's retirement at age 34 particularly unexpected? No. Did he walk away in the prime of his career? No. Did it seem like he had a burning desire to take any quarterback job offered to him? No.However, it did seem like we never got to see the very best of Cutler and his ridiculous arm, and he walked away with a reputation as the talent-wasting quarterback known for not caring enough. He has no one else to blame for his questionable decision-making, lowlight-reel turnovers, and lack of discipline. But that doesn't mean he can't learn from his mistakes, nor does it mean he can't be a success in his reported return from retirement with the Miami Dolphins. In fact, Gase and the Dolphins offer the one-time Pro Bowler a tailor-made opportunity to totally change the way he's perceived - if he can take advantage of the situation and admit his former approach didn't work.Related - Report: Dolphins, Cutler finalizing 1-year, $10M dealCutler's career has been defined by his (lack of) accomplishments instead of his obvious skill. Football fans and media banged their heads against the wall watching Cutler toggle between making truly elite throws and carelessly turning the ball over. For every fan who argues that Cutler has top-quarterback talent, it seems like there's a video clip that makes the claim hard to believe.Related: For divisive Cutler, being good enough eventually didn't cut itIn Miami, reuniting with Adam Gase gives Cutler a chance to be remembered as the guardian angel of the Dolphins' 2017 season, not a disappointment. The former Bears offensive coordinator introduced a new system as Dolphins head coach last season, and it could be the ideal way to get the most out of Cutler's exceptional arm strength while limiting his turnovers, as long as the 34-year-old is willing to adapt.Gase minimized Ryan Tannehill's role last year with an offense that averaged less than 30 throws per contest, provided simple reads, and leaned on Jay Ajayi and the run game. That approach should work for Cutler too, provided that he's realized his gun-slinging, carefree style of passing will only provoke laughter and disapproval. He needs to harness his arm strength and execute the plays that are called. And he'll have some exciting targets to work with in the process. Cutler had pretty solid offensive weapons in Chicago - namely the trio of Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, and Alshon Jeffery - but Miami's group is impressive in its own right. Ajayi averaged over 100 yards per start last year. The combination of the Dolphins' three young receivers and the arrival of Gase's former starting tight end, Julius Thomas, gives Cutler one of the most balanced passing attacks in the league.Player Catches Receiving Yards TDsJarvis Landry9411364DeVante Parker567444Kenny Stills427269(Stats from 2016 season)It helps that Cutler's familiarity with Gase makes Miami one of very few teams he could join at this point and learn the offense by season's start.Defensively, the Dolphins should be better than they were a year ago. Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones returns from injury, Lawrence Timmons was added to be a leader in the middle of the defense, and the team's first three draft picks were defensive players. Miami made the playoffs last year with the 18th-ranked scoring defense in the league, and can surely improve that mark with this upgraded personnel. If Cutler can stick to his coach's script and get the ball in the hands of his playmakers, there's no reason the Dolphins can't continue to progress under Gase and take another stab at the playoffs. That would be huge for Cutler's reputation.Instead of being remembered as Smokin' Jay - a man whose fans study more tape than he does - Cutler would become a savior: the man who came out of retirement to keep the Dolphins on track after their own quarterback was lost.Of course, it's a long shot, as the Dolphins are well aware, but what Cutler wants out of the opportunity will largely determine what he gets. If he just wants to delay his broadcast career and pick up a few extra million for a rainy day, it'll be a long, painful season for the team and the quarterback. And if he wants to prove there was nothing wrong with his game all along, he's in for a rude awakening. But if Cutler wants to take a different - more focused - approach, he's in position to make up for a lot of bad with just one season of good.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brock Osweiler is for sale to the highest bidder.By announcing that Osweiler will start the Cleveland Browns' preseason opener Thursday, despite not taking first-team snaps at training camp, the team is sending a clear message that he's available to anyone who wants him.Cody Kessler and rookie DeShone Kizer have split first-team reps at camp, while Osweiler has been relegated to the second unit. Kessler and Kizer are the only Browns quarterbacks with a chance to start Week 1, by all appearances. But it will be Osweiler out there first for everyone (read: NFL general managers) to see when the Browns take their first snaps of the preseason against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.Where he plays this fall - or perhaps if he plays at all - could be determined by how he performs during this showcase. He won't cost much. Maybe a conditional seventh-round pick. The Browns would probably even be willing to get creative and eat some of Osweiler's $16-million salary.Even at that steep discount, the Browns have found no takers so far.The Miami Dolphins decided their best option with Ryan Tannehill likely out for the season was to lure Jay Cutler out of retirement. It doesn't appear they even considered trading for Osweiler, despite the fact that head coach Adam Gase coached him in Denver.Another injury to a starting quarterback could stimulate Osweiler's market, but it probably won't tilt the scale in favor of demand over supply. Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned, and there's always a chance Tony Romo will decide to follow Cutler's path and forego retirement for one more year if the right opportunity opens up.Frankly, it's hard to imagine any team trading for Osweiler, even if he tears it up Thursday. Cody Kessler is also competing for the chance to start Week 1.Curiously, Kizer and Kessler have split first-team reps at training camp, while Osweiler has played with the second team. Just when you thought Jay Cutler was out of the NFL, it pulled him back in.Now, how do you feel about that? With the help of Cutler's many facial expressions, we explore five very understandable emotions you may be experiencing after hearing news that he will be the Miami Dolphins' new quarterback.Happy(This is as happy as he gets)Good for Cutler.Whether you believe he deserved a second chance or not, an optimistic person can appreciate that one of the best arms the NFL has ever seen is back in the NFL.Cutler's resume of accomplishments never accurately reflected his arm talent and, at the time of his initial retirement, his career felt unfinished. Now, Cutler gets a chance with his old coach to save the Dolphins' season and redeem his legacy.MadIf you consult with Twitter (it's probably best not to), the only quarterback any team should sign this offseason is Colin Kaepernick - and yet still, he is jobless. While Kaepernick isn't in consideration for every "camp arm" quarterback job that gets filled, a major injury to a starter was supposed to be the door that would let the mobile passer back in the league. Kaepernick fans have a right to be angered by the Dolphins' decision, though the quarterback's sympathy for Fidel Castro likely wouldn't have sat well in the South Beach community.Miami reportedly considered Kaepernick, but preferred drawing Cutler out of retirement than bringing the socially active persona onto their squad.CuriousWhat was he going to say on those broadcasts? He's built a reputation as a guy who doesn't care what others think of him. He could have said anything. He might have just started trash-talking guys he doesn't like. While you may not like him as a quarterback, Cutler's role as a broadcaster was going to be very intriguing and likely quite different from Phil Simms' version of just pointing out the obvious. If you happen to be a person who does not care at all about football broadcasts, you may still be curious just to see Cutler in a different uniform and in a warm climate.DiscouragedAt the end of the day, Cutler's dream job is playing quarterback in the NFL.While many of us strive and struggle for years to maybe, someday get our dream job, Cutler just had a team work hard to convince him to take $10 million to do his.If you spent your week grinding through each day in hopes of achieving a better life for you and your kin, and then you read on a Sunday afternoon that interception-prone Cutler just had a seven-month vacation before strolling back to a job thousands of young athletes would kill to have, it's very understandable that you'd feel discouraged.AmusedSo that guy who is known for not giving a damn, throwing bonehead interceptions, shooting the camera funny looks, chucking the ball as hard as possible, and his own meme where he smokes a cigarette on the sidelines is back in the league?Awesome. That's going to be hilarious.(Photos Courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Even at practice, Josh Norman isn't allowed to perform his signature bow-and-arrow celebration.Officials have told the Washington Redskins cornerback that - whether it be in a game, on the sidelines, or at practice - he will be fined for any use of imaginary weaponry, and that doesn't sit well with Norman at all - for a few reasons.First of all, Norman believes he is being targeted for this penalty as he was the first to receive a fine for the action despite Brandin Cooks performing the act without discipline since 2015."You're just picking on one person here," Norman said Sunday, according to ESPN's John Keim. "Cooks has been doing it for years, and now all of a sudden you want to quit and stop it? Why is that?"Second, Norman points to the other team-organized, non-imaginary celebrations that simulate use of weapons without a fine."You can shoot a cannon in a stadium, or you can shoot a musket in a stadium a well," Norman said, referring to the Buccaneers' and Patriots' celebrations. "If one of them is bad and looked at as dangerous, how come not all of them are looked at in that way? ... When someone shoots an imaginary bow and arrow up in the sky, that's a penalty?"Third, Norman says he isn't even pretending to harm someone with his celebration, and even he was, who has a bow and arrow just lying around to go shoot down their enemies?"It's not like you're shooting at somebody," said Norman. "You're shooting up. It gets the crowd excited, something to where everyone's getting pumped up, so why take that away? What for?"You don't come back to the locker room and come get a bow-and-arrow and shoot somebody. Like, come on, man, let's have fun. Let us do something to where we feel excited. We're not out here shooting someone with a gun. I can understand that. It's shooting a bow and arrow."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The NFL has hired former San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, who was fired last season, as a football operations consultant, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Baalke's role appears to have little focus as he will advise on game-related matters, officiating video review, player development and evaluation, according to Schefter.Prior to accepting his position as vice president of football operations with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Coughlin served in a similar role as NFL senior adviser to football operations in 2016. It is unclear if Baalke is explicitly replacing Coughlin.Baalke was a member of the 49ers' front office from 2005 to 2016, serving as GM for the last five years of his tenure. He has been largely credited with driving Jim Harbaugh away from the organization and having poor communication with his head coaches in general. He was fired before the 2016 season ended.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Prior to reportedly signing Jay Cutler as their new quarterback, the Miami Dolphins apparently considered Colin Kaepernick, Tim Tebow, and Kyle Orton as replacements for Ryan Tannehill, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. The team decided to go with Cutler for multiple reasons and discarded some of the other options fairly quickly, adds Salguero, who specifies that wasn't the Dolphins' complete list of candidates. Cutler was, however, reportedly their top choice.Dolphins head coach Adam Gase worked with Orton and Tebow as members of the Broncos. He served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Denver.Kaepernick was thought to be a potential replacement for Tannehill, who could be out for the year with a partially torn ACL, but Kaepernick's decision to wear a Fidel Castro T-shirt before playing the Dolphins last season cast doubt on whether fans would accept his signing.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Miami Dolphins know this is a long shot. The Dolphins don't actually believe their chances of making a playoff push with Jay Cutler are as good as they would be with Ryan Tannehill, and they're correct. But Miami is rightfully desperate after Tannehill sustained a non-contact knee injury and reportedly faces either season-ending surgery or a six-to-eight week rehab layoff, with the former being more likely.Like the Minnesota Vikings did in 2016 following Teddy Bridgewater's injury, the Dolphins have swung for the fences - because why not?Their only other options besides reportedly signing Cutler were: riding with Matt Moore, likely resigning themselves to a lost season and a top pick; or signing Colin Kaepernick, who may not have gotten a less friendly reception from a fan base than Miami's after he wore a Fidel Castro T-shirt last year. While observers are split on whether the Vikings should have traded for Sam Bradford or kept their first-round pick and embraced tanking, teams are always prisoners of the moment. With a roster coming off a playoff appearance last year and a hot-shot head coach in Adam Gase - who was Cutler's offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears in 2015 - the Dolphins are presumably flush with confidence about their chances this season. And Cutler keeps that hope alive, though the odds seem stacked against this Miami experiment being a success.Cutler, after all, is a 34-year-old quarterback who spent this offseason sunning his buttocks and preparing to spend the 2017 campaign and beyond in the broadcast booth for FOX.Even if you believe in miracles and Gase's ability to bring out the best in quarterbacks, the Dolphins' ceiling under Cutler doesn't project to be that high.In 2015, Gase helped Cutler to a career year in which he threw for 3,659 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions - good for a 92.3 passer rating. He also neared his career bests in completion percentage and yards-per-attempt average, and, most importantly, stayed healthy and started 15 games. But Cutler was still erratic, unable to shake his penchant for turnovers and what-the-hell-was-he-thinking throws. That's the best the Dolphins can hope for - and even that might be unrealistic, since that was two years ago, before Cutler developed retirement rust or made this discouraging statement upon calling an end to his football career:

Kirk Cousins is happy to be a member of the Washington Redskins, but after the 2017 season, he wants to keep his options open. After declining to sign the deal offered to him by the Redskins this summer, Cousins said he's comfortable playing under the franchise tag and would prefer to keep his options open after the season. The NFL's lack of fully guaranteed contracts has made him weary of agreeing to a long-term contract."A lot of it goes back to, these contracts are not baseball contracts; they're not basketball contracts," Cousins said, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano. "As a result, you're not really signing a five-year deal, you're not really signing a six-year deal. You're signing a two-year deal, and then there is an obligation for several years after that. And that just didn't sit well with me, and I'm better off, if those are my options, I'm better off signing a one-year deal and then having freedom ..."In the league, there's so much change, so much turnover year after year, I think it makes a lot of sense to re-evaluate where we're at, where the league's at at the end of this season."Cousins has invested a lot into his own faith and ability to know when things feel "right." He said things never felt right in long-term negotiations so he didn't sign. Cousins did the same when choosing to play college ball at Michigan State. He had offers from other schools, but didn't get the right feeling from any of them before the Spartans came calling."Michigan State offered in the 11th hour, and even before they offered, I visited the school and it felt right," said Cousins. "And much the same way right now - I just didn't feel at peace about it at this time, and I wanted more time to pass."That was reason No. 1, and there's other ways you can protect yourself, through insurance policies and things like that, where you have answers if the worst does happen."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Atlanta Falcons cornerback Jalen Collins has been suspended for the first 10 games of the 2017 regular season for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances, the team announced Sunday.Collins was also banned for the first four games of 2016 for the same violation."We are extremely disappointed that for the second straight season we are dealing with a suspension for Jalen," said Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff in a statement. "Such are the consequences when certain choices are made. Our decisions going forward will be based on what Dan and I feel is best for the team."Collins' role in his second year expanded, especially after the Falcons lost star cornerback Desmond Trufant to a season-ending injury halfway through the year. However, while losing Collins is a blow, Atlanta should have enough depth to survive, with Brian Poole, Deji Olatoye, and C.J. Goodwin set to see increased playing time.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

As Jay Cutler is reportedly set to join the Miami Dolphins, more clarity on Ryan Tannehill's injury situation has arisen.Tannehill has a partially torn ACL in his left knee, a similar injury to the one that ended his season last year, the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reports. As previously reported, the quarterback will either need season-ending surgery or substantial treatment - either way, he'll reportedly be out for awhile.Tannehill sustained the injury on a non-contact play at Thursday's practice, and it initially seemed like he'd escaped serious injury, as it was reported he hadn't sustained structural damage. That optimism evaporated quickly, however, and now it seems like the Dolphins will be riding with Cutler for the foreseeable future.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. He's back. The Miami Dolphins and quarterback Jay Cutler are finalizing terms on a one-year contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Cutler's deal is worth $10 million, plus $3 million in incentives, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. With Ryan Tannehill's future uncertain following a non-contact knee injury sustained in practice this week, the Dolphins have apparently convinced Cutler to delay his broadcasting career with FOX and return to football.Miami reportedly fears Tannehill will need season-ending surgery, or at the very least, that he'll miss six-to-eight weeks if rehab is opted for.Dolphins head coach Adam Gase was Cutler's offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears in 2015, helping the gunslinging pivot produce the best statistical season of his career.Based on the money given to Cutler, he should earn the starting job in Tannehill's absence, with Matt Moore as his backup.Moore could also start a few games to begin the year if Cutler is unable to get up to speed in time, but given his previous experience in Gase's scheme and with over a month until the season-opener, Cutler should have enough time to get acclimated.Cutler struggled in 2016, starting only five games for the Bears due to injury. However, he was likely the best option at this point to replace Tannehill, even if his turnover-prone style doesn't mesh with Miami's run-first philosophy. However, with the likes of wideouts Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, and Kenny Stills, running back Jay Ajayi, and tight end Julius Thomas, Cutler has the weapons around him to at least keep the Dolphins competitive for however long Tannehill is sidelined.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Washington Redskins star tight end Jordan Reed has no doubt he'll be ready to go for the start of the regular season despite a lingering toe injury."Not at all," Reed said, according to ESPN's John Keim, when asked if he was worried about the opener. "I'll be back out there soon."Reed will visit a specialist regarding his injury, and the Redskins said there was no timetable for his return. While head coach Jay Gruden shared Reed's positivity, he opted against making any guarantees."From every indication I've received from the doctors and trainers and from Jordan, I feel he'll be ready for the season," Gruden said. "But you never know, so we'll still have to wait and see. Things are odd from time to time, but I have total faith that he'll be ready."With the Redskins losing wideouts DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency, the oft-injured tight end is Washington's most established receiving threat, and any missed time could significantly hinder the team's offense.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. It's every NFL player's dream to don the iconic gold jacket, but very few get to live it.It takes elite and consistent production, standout moments, personal accolades, and a championship or two (more so for quarterbacks); a compelling narrative doesn't hurt either, with Kurt Warner being the latest example. However, there are a number of young NFLers - which we will define as players with no more than four years of experience - who've carved out the beginning of Hall of Fame careers:Here are seven of them:Odell Beckham Jr.Duh.All Beckham has done since entering the NFL is shatter expectations and break records. He's already considered among the top tier of players at his position - a must for the Hall - and is all but certain to be one of the faces of the NFL for the next decade.Beckham already arguably has a better signature moment than a lot of HOFers; every one-handed catch from now until the end of time will be graded in comparison to the New York Giants star's amazing grab from 2014.Though Beckham has already become the fastest player to reach 3,500 career receiving yards and is tied for most catches through three years, you get the sense that he's only scratched the surface of his potential.Khalil MackIf legendary left tackle Joe Thomas - who might as well have his bust for Canton made now - believes Mack has the makings of a Hall of Famer, who are we to disagree?Entering his fourth year, Mack may have wrestled the title of the NFL's best defender from J.J. Watt following a dominant 2016 in which he won the Defensive Player of the Year award. While Von Miller may be the league's best pure pass-rusher, Mack is right there with him, totaling 30 sacks over three seasons. And unlike Miller, Mack's ability to defend the run is just as impressive as his pass-rush game.As one of the stars of the resurgent Raiders, Mack is well-placed to build a storied career.Desmond TrufantTrufant doesn't get the national recognition some of the others on this list do, and he missed the chance to shine in the spotlight when a season-ending pectoral injury forced him to sit out the Falcons' Super Bowl run last season. But make no mistake, Trufant has had a spectacular start to his career and is arguably the league's best cornerback. Quarterbacks rarely look his way, and when they do, he makes them pay with a rare combination of man-coverage skills and athleticism. The Falcons' young defense has top-five potential, and if Atlanta remains among the NFL's elite teams, Trufant will get his due.Aaron DonaldDonald is currently holding out from training camp in order to leverage a new contract extension from the Rams, and no one should bat an eyelid if Los Angeles makes him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. The undersized defensive tackle has made fools out of his doubters, constantly wreaking havoc in opponents' backfields despite a less-than-stellar supporting cast. Amazingly, though he's played 3-technique defensive tackle in the Rams' 4-3 defense, he has 28 sacks over three years - two fewer than Mack, who rushes from the edge. And, as ridiculous as it might sound, Donald might still have room to improve. The Rams hired Wade Phillips as their new defensive coordinator this season, and he's made a career out of creating dominant defensive linemen. L.A. will switch to a 3-4 scheme for 2017, meaning Donald should get more chances to rush the passer and set new standards for production from defensive tackles.Zack MartinThe Dallas Cowboys' offensive line has been widely recognized as the NFL's premier unit over the past several years, and Martin is a huge reason for its success. The former first-rounder is one of the best guards in football, and thanks to his stellar play - plus the notoriety that comes with playing for "America's Team" - he has three Pro Bowl appearances, two first-team All-Pro nods, and one second-team All-Pro award on his resume in just three years.Offensive linemen struggle to garner the plaudits they deserve, but Martin is in the perfect place and has the ideal teammates - his fellow dominant linemen, as well as star running back Ezekiel Elliott - to be one of the few who are rewarded with a gold jacket.Le'Veon BellAs the NFL becomes more and more of a pass-first league, running backs are becoming expendable and split backfields more common, so it's likely we'll see the stream of Hall of Famers at the position ease off.But if Bell can stay healthy and avoid further off-field issues, he can be the exception to the new rule. The Pittsburgh Steelers running back is both a throwback and the leader of a new wave. He's a rare breed of runner who handles the vast majority of his team's carries, but he also plays with a style made for the modern NFL, where his vision can trump the stellar athletes on the other side of the ball and his pass-catching skills allow him to act as a No. 2 receiver. If not for a three-game ban, Bell may have broken records in 2016. He recorded 157 scrimmage yards per game, just ahead of Chris Johnson's average when he posted an all-time best mark of 2,509 yards from scrimmage in 2009.Travis KelceThe heir apparent to Rob Gronkowski, Kelce highlighted his limitless potential with the first 1,000-yard campaign of his career in 2016, essentially acting as the Kansas City Chiefs' No. 1 option in the passing game.Since an injury-abbreviated rookie season in 2013, Kelce has established himself as one of the biggest mismatches in the league. He's too nimble for safeties, too fast for linebackers, and too strong for cornerbacks. The tight end could do with a quarterback who's more aggressive, and while Patrick Mahomes will likely sit for a year or two behind Alex Smith, he's the type of gunslinger who could propel Kelce into Canton.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Joe Flacco's back injury was reportedly confirmed as minor by a second medical opinion last week, but the Baltimore Ravens still don't know when to expect their starting quarterback to return to the practice field."We know he's getting better every single day," head coach John Harbaugh said Saturday, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley "Obviously, we have a plan for him, football-wise, when he gets back. But we haven't been told when yet."Flacco's workload will reportedly be slowly increased, but it appears the Ravens are being cautious with their franchise player. The 32-year-old is coming off a subpar season in which he threw 20 touchdowns to 15 interceptions and produced a poor 6.4 yards-per-attempt average. But with arguably the best receiving corps of his career, the former Super Bowl MVP is well-placed for a bounce-back year if he can overcome his back issues.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Covers.com is the biggest and best source for sports betting information, providing unrivaled and original content sports bettors cannot live without.Betting on the NFL preseason isn’t the wisest thing to do but neither is eating red meat, drinking Coke or watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix. A tiger can’t change his stripes and this degenerate can’t stop from betting on the NFL games in August. So, if you’re like me and willing to dabble in the murkiness of exhibition pro football games, please, allow me to give you one tip: Pay attention to the coaches.Yes, these games are meaningless but NFL coaches are among the most competitive people on the planet. They work 20 hours a day not because they love the job so much – it’s because they can’t sleep thinking another coach is working harder and getting an edge. Some head coaches can’t cut turn off the thirst for Ws even in the preseason. A win is a win and if they’re keeping score, it’s always better to be on the team with more points. Here’s a look at the three best head coaches against the spread in August over the last three years.Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings11-2 ATS, 12-1 SUThe former Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator has been running the show in Minnesota since 2014. He lost his starting quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, to injury in practice at the tail end of August, but that didn’t stop his team from going a perfect 4-0 ATS in the preseason.Zimmer normally does the defensive play calling for the Vikings but he may let his defensive coordinator handle the responsibility in the preseason. The Vikings are 3-0 SU and ATS in Week 1 of the preseason under Zimmer. The Vikes are 1-point road underdogs against the Buffalo Bills in their first preseason game.John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens10-2 ATS, 9-3 SU (Since 2014)The Ravens have never done worse than 2-2 against the spread in the preseason since Harbaugh took the head coaching job in 2008. Baltimore is covering in nearly 64 percent of its exhibition contests since then.Harbaugh, though, has been vocal about his distaste for the lengthy preseason slate and last year told reporters he’d get rid of preseason games altogether if it were up to him.Ravens starting quarterback Joe Flacco is out temporarily with a sore back and Baltimore is scrambling to sort out its QB depth chart before the start of the season. The Ravens are considering signing free agent Colin Kaepernick and even brought in arena-league QB David Olson.Baltimore is a 1-point home fave against the Washington Redskins next Thursday.Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins8-4 ATS, 9-3 ATSThe first three years of Jay Gruden’s coaching career haven’t gone as well as Redskins fans would have hoped. Gruden hasn’t jelled with any of his quarterbacks in Washington and the team is a middling 21-26-1 straight up in the Gruden era.At least football fans in the D.C. area can take solace knowing their team covers the spread 66 percent of the time in August under the lesser Gruden brother.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. LaDainian Tomlinson pleaded for racial unity and harmony during his Hall of Fame speech, a common theme of the evening amid a turbulent political climate. The former Chargers running back recounted a story of his great-great-great grandfather coming to the United States on a slave ship from West Africa, and called for harmony in these polarizing times."The family legacy that began in such a cruel way has given birth to generations of successful, caring Tomlinsons," he said Saturday. "I firmly believe that God chose me to help bring two races together under one last name: Tomlinson. I'm of mixed race, and I represent America. My story is America's story. All our ancestors, unless we're American Indian, came from another country, another culture. Football is a microcosm of America. All races, religions, and creeds living, playing, competing side by side."Tomlinson continued, invoking the message of change championed by former President Barack Obama."On America's team, let’s not choose to be against one another. Let's choose to be for one another. My great-great-great grandfather had no choice. We have one. I pray we dedicate ourselves to be the best team we can be, working and living together, representing the highest ideals of mankind, leading the way for all nations to follow. One of the most eloquent orators of our time said it best in his farewell address. Paraphrasing and humbly building upon what President Obama said, 'We all have to try harder, show up, dive in and stay at it.'
