Recently I needed a hard drive upgrade, and after trying out Xubuntu 14.04, I decided to stick with Crunchbang 11: http://crunchbang.org/ With a fresh installation, I needed to quickly get the applications that weren't an apt-get away.

Typically after installing a Linux distro, you've got to install programs such as Nvidia drivers, Virtualbox non-ose + extensions, Flash, Libreoffice, Java. Since these tend to be the more complicated installations, typically you would need to search "Distro install latest nvidia" and follow the related tutorial.
