Privacy Badger really doesn't like that link.

I'm a bit unsure what timezone you want me to pick. Your link says Denmark is "GMT+2", but if you ask date, you'll have to use TZ=GMT-2 date to get the correct output.

BTW: Have you considered sorting the options in a more logical order?

24 hours, perhaps? Actually probably a few days since there are probably readers who don't check Pipedot every day.

I'm a little surprised they didn't just geolocate the IPs of the posters and produced a graph from that, although it could be interesting to do compare the results of that with the results from the poll.

There are probably other ways, but remember zafiro17 is a lowly editor, not a server admin :) And anyway, the honor system is probably more appropriate to a friendly bunch of techies than an invasive HTML trick. I happen to dislike webpages that request my location and refuse to grant it. If I visit Google to look up a question and they want to know my location, I feel like Google can just piss off - since my location doesn't affect either my question or the answer. (unless I'm googling for the closest brewpub or something).

Third party trackers, like Google Analytics, go against the Privacy Statement of this site and will never be seen here.

Of course, that applies more to the third party part than the analyze part. Some parts of pipecode, such as the recently added short code links, do record some statistics and are, in fact, using IP geolocation to plot where people are browsing from. For example, the short code for this poll is: http://pipedot.org/3ZH and it's statistic page is: http://pipedot.org/3ZH+

I'm with a LOT of other people. I am currently under EDT, and the map and reality agree that I am -4 (until DST goes out of effect). But I answered -5. The full specification of my TZ ID is EST5EDT. Everybody thinks of it as 5 h behind Greenwich; hence conceptually it is 5 hr behind GMT or UTC "sort of" (i.e., the EST base spec is). I am OCD and perhaps overthink questions, but you are going to get other "wrong" votes. EST5EDT is a VERY popular TZ.

I prefer the "select a nearby city" method of selecting your timezone. The "GMT minus X" method is off by 1 hour for half the year. But if I select "America/Chicago", I know that I'll always get Central Time as defined by the current political tweaking. Those politicians seem to like to change when Daylight Saving Time starts a lot.
