Nobel Peace Prize: Is this Greta Thunberg’s year?
The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced just three weeks before world leaders gather for a climate summit that scientists say could determine the future of the planet, one reason why prize watchers say this could be the year of Greta Thunberg. The world’s most prestigious political accolade will be unveiled on Oct. 8. While the winner often seems a total surprise, those who follow it closely say the best way to guess is to look at the global issues most likely to be on the minds of the five committee members who choose. With the COP26 climate summit set for the start of November in Scotland, that issue could be global warming. Scientists paint this summit as the last chance to set binding targets for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions for the next decade, vital if the world is to have hope of keeping temperature change below the 1.5 degree Celsius target to avert catastrophe. That could point to Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, who at 18 would be the second youngest winner in history by a few months, after Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai.“The committee often wants to send a message. And this will be a strong message to send to COP26, which will be happening between the announcement of the award and the ceremony,” Dan Smith, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, told Reuters.Another big issue the committee may want to address is democracy and free speech. That could mean an award for a press freedom group, such as the Committee to Protect Journalists or Reporters Without Borders, or for a prominent political dissident, such as exiled Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya or jailed Russian activist Alexei Navalny.A win for a journalism advocacy group would resonate “with the large debate about the importance of independent reporting and the fighting of fake news for democratic governance,” said Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo.A Nobel for either Navalny or Tsikhanouskaya would be an echo of the Cold War, when peace and literature prizes were bestowed on prominent Soviet dissidents such as Andrei Sakharov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn.Oddsmakers also tip groups such as the World Health Organization or the vaccine sharing body COVAX, which are directly involved in the global battle against COVID-19. But prize watchers say this could be less likely than might be assumed: the committee already cited the pandemic response last year, when it chose the U.N. World Food Programme. While parliamentarians from any country can nominate candidates for the prize, in recent years the winner has tended to be a nominee proposed by lawmakers from Norway, whose parliament appoints the prize committee.Norwegian lawmakers surveyed by Reuters have included Thunberg, Navalny, Tsikhanouskaya and the WHO on their lists.

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine shows 74% efficacy in large US trial
AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine demonstrated 74% efficacy at preventing symptomatic disease, a figure that increased to 83.5% in people aged 65 and older, according to long-awaited results of the company’s US clinical trial published on Wednesday.Overall efficacy of 74% was lower than the interim 79% figure reported by the British drugmaker in March, a result AstraZeneca revised days later to 76% after a rare public rebuke from health officials that the figure was based on “outdated information.”The data looked at more than 26,000 volunteers in the United States, Chile and Peru, who received two doses of the vaccine spaced about a month apart. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. There were no cases of severe or critical symptomatic COVID-19 among the more than 17,600 participants who got the vaccine, compared with 8 such cases among the 8,500 volunteers who got the placebo. There were also two deaths in the placebo group but none among those who received the vaccine.“I was pleasantly surprised,” Dr. Anna Durbin, a vaccine researcher at Johns Hopkins University and one of the study’s investigators, said of the overall result. “It was also highly protective against severe disease and hospitalization,” she said. There were no cases of a rare but serious blood clotting side effect called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia that has been linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine developed with Oxford University researchers.AstraZeneca said in late July it planned to file for full approval with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, rather than seek emergency use authorization. Chief Executive Pascal Soriot told a media briefing at the time he hoped the vaccine could still play a role in the United States, even though the process was taking longer than expected. The company is exploring booster doses for people whohave already been vaccinated with two doses of either its ownshot or mRNA-based vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna. The vaccine, known as Vaxzevria, is authorized for use in more than 170 countries. A spokesperson said the company expects to file for U.S. approval later this year.Durbin said she does not expect Vaxzevria to be used much in the United States, but securing FDA approval “does give them gravitas.”

Windows 11 rolls out redesigned Paint app ahead of official release
With less than a week to October 5, the official release date of Windows 11, Microsoft has rolled out the modernized Paint app to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel. It has been redesigned to go with the Windows 11’s overhauled user interface (UI), with components like the toolbar being brushed over with more of the Microsoft Fluent Design system that informed the refreshed Paint app icon, as well as rounded edges on the window. The users will be able to download the Paint app which no longer ships with the operating system itself. The classic Paint app was on the verge to be chopped and to be replaced by Paint 3D just few years back, but Microsoft also cut Paint 3D from the apps pre-installed on new devices and clean installs of Windows 11.In the newly redesigned app, there are rounded corners on the window and new Fluent toolbar icon designs, a rounded colour palette, new drop-down menus for Paint creating and editing tools, and a simplified toolbar. The new “A” icon in the toolbar next to the paint-fill icon makes it easier for Paint users to add text to creations.Other upcoming additions in Paint’s pipeline include a dark theme, a centered canvas, and refreshed dialogs that will be updated soon.Microsoft’s chief product officer Panos Panay teased Paint’s new dark theme in August and said Paint had been “beautifully redesigned”.Paint is not the only app being redesigned for Windows 11. Several that come with Windows 11 pre-installed, such as the Calculator app and built-in Mail and Calendar Windows apps, have been refreshed, including with rounded corners.Skype, too, won’t be pre-installed on new Windows 11. However, it also got a visual revamp. It came by default in the Windows 10. Microsoft these days seems more focused on Teams for consumers and enterprise.Facebook Notice for EU!
