OpenNIC to become world's leading DNS alternative after Cisco/OpenDNS deal

by

With the Cisco acquisition of OpenDNS, OpenNIC is now
positioned as the only viable, open and democratic DNS alternative.

OpenNIC fears this recent acquisition will adversely impact current OpenDNS users, giving Cisco large-scale access to the DNS records of OpenDNS subscribers. OpenNIC, founded in 2000, built its foundation based upon the ideal of an open, transparent, and democratic DNS. We remain true to our roots, and welcome all OpenDNS users who value the privacy of their data.

submitter note: i was hesitant to simply submit a press release, but i feel the story behind it might be a foundation for a more comprehensive article (disclosure: long time opennic user, and domain owner, with a growing disdain for cisco); OpenNIC has had a long time commitment to a open and neutral internet, run by its users, not their governments.

feel free to delete or bury as necessary - is this more appropriate in 'Stream'? Stream didnt seem appropriate for press-release-y kinds of news.

OpenNIC claiming to be awesome just isn't much of a story. However... Cisco buying OpenDNS sounds like it's a story, and OpenNIC can certainly be a footnote in there, as a non-corporate alternative.
