Help question about gunlaw and VRF 14.

A VRF 14 is not a shotgun, AOW, or a pistol. It is classified as a "firearm." Are "firearms" exempt from the pistol brace rule? Can you put a vertical grip on them? No one has been talking about this and the ATF is not helpful either. (I'm fairly certain putting a pistol brace on a Vrf 14 makes it a short barreled shotgun at this point, but I can't find any guidance. )
