Why are 1911s so over represented in the high end handgun market?

I just did a quick survey of the 87 semi-automatic pistols that are currently available on guns.com for a price of over $3,000.

66 1911s

6 Laugo Aliens

6 Desert Eagles

9 others (CZ, Walther, SIG, Tanfoglio, FK)

Why do the high end handgun manufacturers overwhelmingly (75% of the market) produce 1911-style pistols? Is there a reason why there's virtually no high end market for other styles of pistol? Why isn't there someone out there making $5,000 versions of the P226 the way that Nighthawk does with 1911s?
