Considering an ultra lightweight hiking AR Pistol. Pros and cons?

Looking to build an ultra light .223 AR Pistol for hiking in Alaska, mostly for close range bear protection. Off the top of my head I'm thinking polymer lower, 5" barrel, folding stock, flip up sights. This is intended for 50 yards or less. I have a .44 Blackhawk but a single action revolver with 6 rounds vs a charging bear doesn't seem like a good combo. Even with less stopping power I am thinking the .223 would be more of a quantity over quality thing.

Biggest question is am I going to run into gassing issues with such a short barrel? I have never built anything sub 8"? Any other issues anyone might see with this build and its purpose? I know there are better firearms out there for bear protection but not any you'd want to haul around 15 miles up mountains. Thanks for any input.
