All-purpose hunting rifle caliber?

I'm looking to get into some deer hunting this fall--also maybe some bear and elk at some point. I'm hoping to get one rifle with a sufficient caliber to be able to handle all such animals. Does anyone have a suggestion on caliber (and maybe a make/model of a good, mid-value rifle)? I'm fairly ignorant on the caliber differences so appreciate any advice. Thanks.
