Lenovo Yoga Book looks like a futuristic movie prop
In "shut up and take my money, maybe" news, Lenovo's new Yoga Book makes Microsoft's Surface look like ENIAC. It's a cheap, unbelievably slim tablet computer, yet promises the genuine utility of a laptop by unusual means: a Wacom-powered touchpad that doubles as a keyboard. The Verge is so impressed its got a longread up already.
Rogue planet hurtling toward a collision with Earth and other tabloid stunners
It’s hard to be disturbed by this week’s tabloid revelations that Hillary Clinton is dying, Robert Wagner has been arrested for murdering Natalie Wood, and Tom Hanks’ marriage is imploding in a $355 million divorce battle, when the 'National Examiner' reveals that a “phantom planet” is heading our way and will “destroy Earth.”You’d think that might be big news, but the end of the world doesn’t even merit a mention on the Examiner’s own cover, instead devoted to “The Royals Nobody Knows,” with the revelation that Prince William and wife Kate will “drag the dusty old royals into the modern world.” Not that there will be a world left for the royals to enjoy, if the Examiner’s crack scientific reporting team is correct in its analysis of a “new video of a rare blood moon” which supposedly shows that “a rogue planet is hurtling toward a collision with Earth.” The ‘Examiner’ seems unconcerned that the video doesn’t show a hidden planet, which doesn’t exist in reality and has been widely debunked in all but the most paranoid corners of the interwebs. It’s about as realistic as everything else in this week’s tabloids, however, which seem to have given up even attempting a semblance of accuracy.“Robert Wagner Murder Arrest!” screams the ‘Globe’ cover, with a photo of the actor in handcuffs. Search hard, and you’ll find in tiny print the word: “Dramatization.” Search within, and you’ll find that Wagner has not even been arrested - that’s simply what the ‘Globe’ believes should happen, as it refuses to stop beating this long-dead horse. There’s no new evidence in the case, but the ‘Globe' claims investigators have reviewed decades-old evidence and concluded that Wagner had at least one affair - “possibly two” - while married to ‘West Side Story’ star Wood. If true, that would tell any rational reader that Wagner had cheated on his wife. But to the insightful ‘Globe’ crime reporters such allegations of infidelity can mean only one thing: he killed his wife. Seems logical. The ‘National Enquirer’ doesn’t even give Hillary Clinton the benefit of a “dramatization” caption when its cover photo features a disturbing shot of the presidential candidate Photoshopped with dark wrinkled bags beneath both hollowed eyes, deep wrinkles across her jowls and above her lip, and ancient folds of skin carved into her sagging neck. The doctored photo accompanies the ‘Enquirer’ medical team exposing “Hillary’s full medical file,” and though they haven’t actually got their hands on so much as Hillary’s nail file, they’ve discussed it among themselves and concluded that she suffers pretty much every ailment imaginable: Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, brain damage, three strokes, alcoholism, liver damage, violent rages and memory loss. This is the same crack ‘Enquirer’ medical team that tells us “acting legend Al Pacino has undergone life-or-death cataract surgery” - because every medical reporter knows that cataracts left untreated can lead to blindness, which as we all know is a fatal condition. The most bizarre story of the week is the ‘Enquirer’ “world exclusive” interview with John Mark Carr, secreted away in Thailand, who claims that he witnessed the death of child beauty pageant queen JonBenet Ramsey in 1996, and helped move her body and “stage” the murder scene that police subsequently found. But Carr “refused to name the killer … or be more specific about the ‘accident.” Even the ‘Enquirer’ is at a loss to explain why Carr “oddly” insisted that DNA evidence found by police at the murder scene “has absolutely no connection to that little girl’s death.” It’s a story lacking all credibility, but that never troubles the ‘Enquirer.’Tom Hanks’s alleged impending divorce has been a ‘Globe’ obsession for months, but nobody seems to have told Hanks, who tells ‘Us’ magazine that he’s the biggest supporter of wife Rita Wilson’s singing career, insisting: “I’m the biggest groupie.”‘Us’ mag devotes its cover to the heartbreaking news that Taylor Swift and actor Tom Hiddleston have called it quits after a three-month fling which seemed designed to titilate tabloid editors while annoying the heck out of the rest of the world.Fortunately we have the crack investigative team at ‘Us’ mag to tell us that Olivia Culpo (Who she, Ed?) wore it best, rapper Trina carries lip gloss and lollipops in her Chanel satchel, Harry Connick Jr. “once ate 19 Krispy Kreme doughnuts in one sitting,” and that the stars are just like us: they go shopping, wear hats, play with their dogs and pump their own gas.‘People’ magazine devotes its cover to ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ actor Patrick Dempsey revealing how he saved his marriage and found new joy in fatherhood. Why did Dempsey walk out on his wife of 22 years in January 2015? “I became frustrated with the lack of quality of experience in my life,” he explains. “I wanted to get to that deeper level, and not just skirt the surface.” I hope Mrs. Dempsey had a better time understanding that than I did.News hounds can rejoice that this week ‘People’ mag gives us its 2016 “Style Issue!’ devoting 30 vacuous pages to celebrity fashions. This fall’s top fashion tip: fill your closet with leopard prints and velvet. Will do!There are always gems to be found among the advertisements run in the tabloids, and amid this week’s ads for miracle anti-wrinkle pills, “love bug” pendants for “your special granddaughter,” Thomas Kinkade’s frosted glass snowman, a Snoopy porcelain music box, nail fungus therapy and a Star Trek 50th anniversary glass sculpture, there’s the impossible-to-resist 12-inch “Mother Teresa Canonization Collector’s Edition” statuette complete with tiny crucifix, rosary, and her trademark blue-trimmed white sari. Best of all, it comes with a “free rosary for personal use,” all for only “five easy payments of $25.99 each.” Or you could just send the money to starving children in India.Onwards and downwards . . .

Archive.org posted the first issue of Mondo 2000, from 1989. (It says #7 on the cover because the first couple of issues were called High Frontiers, then Reality Hackers.) I loved Mondo 2000, which was edited by R.U, Sirius, and it was a big inspiration for Carla and I to start bOING bOING, the zine. David was also a fan. I wrote a few pieces for it, and many of the contributors later went to work or write for Wired, which unlike Mondo, paid contributors and came out on a regular schedule.

Bad trips may be good for you
A "bad trip" on psychedelic mushrooms may lead to "enduring increases in well-being," according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Neuroscientist Roland Griffiths and colleagues surveyed nearly 2,000 adults about their psilocybin experiences. Those who experienced bad trips had taken, on average, a powerful dose of 4 grams. From Psypost:
The rise and fall of Theranos
The rise and fall of Theranos is gripping stuff. The $700m startup touted a revolutionary one-prick suite of blood tests that never worked well. But it managed to keep its failures hidden, writes Vanity Fair's Nick Bilton, thanks to the secrecy and controlling policies of its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes seems to have been aware of the technology's failure from an early stage, but was committed to it in a way that suggests a cult more than a company. (more…)

There may be a sixth basic taste: starchiness
New research suggests that humans have a sixth basic taste in addition to sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, and umami. According to Oregon State University food scientist Juyun Lim, "we can taste other chemicals that comprise foods such as starch degradation products and fatty acids." In a study published in the journal Chemical Senses, they report that "the ability to taste starch or its oligomeric hydrolysis products would be highly adaptive, given their nutritional value.""Humans use starch as a major source of energy, which enables the body to perform its functions," Lim told CNN.Other researchers' candidates for a sixth basic taste include fat and calcium.

Actress Jen Richards explains the problem with casting cis actors in trans roles
Trans actress and activist Jen Richards—whose show Her Story was recently nominated for an Emmy—has been engaging in some important dialogue about representation recently. Specifically she’s focused on Hollywood’s insistence on casting cis (i.e. non-trans) actors in trans parts. Though it happens frequently (think Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club), Richards' most recent comments were specifically inspired by the upcoming indie movie Anything, which stars Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker. Richards tweeted out a long thread on the topic, including these tweets:https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769932017790164992https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769932796915658753https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769933647625322496https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769935281797468161https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769936018313138176https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769936897393106946https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769938075535278080Richards took issue with both Bomer and Mark Ruffalo, who is an executive producer on Anything.https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769939511455260672As backlash against the film increased, Ruffalo himself got involved in the conversation:https://twitter.com/MarkRuffalo/status/771100395242459137https://twitter.com/MarkRuffalo/status/771102840823701504https://twitter.com/MarkRuffalo/status/771103856856014848https://twitter.com/MarkRuffalo/status/771843975909171202Richards tweeted support for Ruffalo's openness:https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/771102631468994560And she later uploaded this 13-minute video in which she thoughtfully explains the entire situation and invites Ruffalo to continue the conversation with her:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLzM7BuNdIoFor more on the topic, you can read a Hollywood Reporter op-ed from director of GLAAD's Transgender Media Program Nick Adams called "Matt Bomer and Men Who Play Transgender Women Send a 'Toxic and Dangerous' Message." KettlePizza creates pizza making geniuses
My wife and I held a pizza pie cook-off last weekend where we supplied the flour, dough and basic toppings. We asked our guests to bring exotic items to personalized their creations and there was even a trophy on the line for the chef who made the best impression on our judge. What my friends didn't know was that they were actually play-testing my favorite new Weber BBQ attachment - The KETTLEPIZZA.The PIZZAKETTLE is basically a metal sleeve that fits between the top and bottom of your existing kettle grill that forces heat to come up from the backside, over the top of the pizza and out the front opening. In the past week I've learned that cooking authentic Neapolitan pizza isn't as tough as I thought it'd be and getting the grill over 700° was the key to making it happen. To be honest, I had 3 rough starts with KETTLEPIZZA and spent about a week fine tuning my tools before getting things dialed in for the party. Below are a few tips that will help you succeed on your first try:Tip #1Visit Kettlepizza.com and pick their Weber grill accessory kit called The Serious Eats KettlePizza Special Edition Kit. I know that $399.95 seems pricey but believe me, since it comes with the cold rolled baking steel you'll be equipped for success from the get-go. The cheaper kit that I picked up didn't have the baking steel and I had to purchase it separately which caused my first two attempts to be flops. The baking steel helps maintain super-high temperatures above your pizza that will help create a crisp bubbly crust. Rather than the heat rising and being lost, the steel stores and radiates the heat for a long, long time.Tip #2My first attempt with the grill was disappointing because I thought I could simply add more charcoal for more heat. But because it's impossible to achieve 700° on a Weber grill with charcoal alone, you'll need to add hardwood chunks to the coals once they're heated.Tip #3I used lighter fluid in my first run and it created a funky tasting pizza disaster. When initially heating up your charcoal, you'll want to use a device like the Rapidfire Chimney Starter as this will eliminate the need of fluid. Your fires will start faster, they'll smell better and your pizza dough will taste better.Tip #4Since you'll be working in an extremely hot environment, I recommend picking up some heat resistant gloves. You’ll feel like a superhero with these as you effortlessly reach into the hot zones and move things around. My glove of choice is called The Heat Guardian and I can say from experience that they really work.THE PIZZA PIE COOKOFF

Why Trump's naked corruption is less interesting than conspiracy theories about Clinton
Yesterday, Paul Krugman wrote that he expects Hillary Clinton will get "Gored" by press innuendo over the next few weeks. Today, The Washington Post's Paul Weldman wonders why "plain facts about Trump's corruption aren't covered much: "you’d think that a story about one party’s nominee giving a large contribution to a state attorney general who promptly shut down an inquiry into that nominee’s scam “university” would be enormous news. Psygnosis Amiga Game Generator
I'm a huge fan of the Commodore Amiga (the world's first psychedelic computer), but what sucked me in as a youngster were games for it made by the Liverpool game developer Psygnosis. In the late 1980s, they realized what this weird, powerful machine could do and created a distinctive aesthetic for their titles. They hired Roger Dean and other prog-rock geniuses to create game art, and adhered to a unique storytelling vibe: not quite gothic, not quite fantasy, not quite 1970s UK pastoral postapocalypse. Then they soaked it in moody tribal electronic music by the likes of David Whittaker and Tim Wright, years before Sadeness hit the charts. The games were also brutally difficult, sadistic even, to the point that it made everything all the more mysterious. There were, simply put, not enough wonderful games with names like "Agony", "Leander" and "Shadow of the Beast."Psygnosis is long defunct, absorbed into Sony and its legacy ascended to Brandhalla. So I hope no-one minds my Psygnosis Game Generator, which combines a random Psygnosisy game name (equal parts concise, literary and antideluvian) with a randomly-picked work of art by Roger Dean and the classic Psygnosis box art wrap. Click "generate" for another—and be sure to share your artifact from a parallel universe. (You can also fiddle with URL parameters if you want to manually pick a title, typeface, painting, etc.)A Psygnosis Game Generator [boingboing.net]

New Ranger Rick design aims for "timeless"
The National Wildlife Federation recently redesigned Ranger Rick, its mascot. This is a good example of the trend to ditch computer-rendered mascot redesigns from the last 10 years or so, which have gotten dated and nasty with remarkable speed. The new one could have been drawn at pretty much any time since the 1960s, but avoids retro, haunted or nostalgic qualities—a deliberate approach, writes artist Parker Jacobs.
