Watch: Zuckerberg talks about how important Facebook privacy is in 2009
Yowza. Here's a 2009 BBC interview with Mark Zuckerberg, with an excerpt below.Reporter: So who is going to own the Facebook content, the person who puts it there, or you?Zuckerberg: The person who puts the content on Facebook always owns the information, and this is why Facebook is such a special service.Reporter: And you won't sell it?Zuckerberg: No, of course not.Reporter: Just to be clear, you're not going to sell, or share, any of the information on Facebook?Zuckerberg: We're not going to share people's information except for with the people that they've asked for it to be shared.
Charges dropped against Turkey's presidential thugs who were filmed brutally beating protesters in Washington
When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Washington DC last year, he brought along his gang of goons beat protesters so brutally that nine were hospitalized. US prosecutors dropped charges against against 11 of the 15 men accused of the bloody assault. In the video above you can see the suited thugs kicking people on the ground as police officers try to stop them.

Children's book about Mike Pence's gay pet rabbit storms Amazon
A childrens' book about a fictional gay bunny belonging to Mike Pence has stormed Amazon, displacing the memoir of fired FBI chief James Comey from the #1 slot and outpacing another childen's book about a presumptively not-gay bunny belonging to Mike Pence, written by his daughter, Charlotte, and wife, Karen. The real Marlon Bundo is already adorable enough, and now fans have two fictional variants to enjoy. The Pences are being good sports. Here's Charlotte: "We have two books giving to charities that are about bunnies, so I’m all for it really."

A proposal to stop 3D printers from making guns is a perfect parable of everything wrong with information security
Many people worry that 3D printers will usher in an epidemic of untraceable "ghost guns," particularly guns that might evade some notional future gun control regime that emerges out of the current movement to put sensible, minimal curbs on guns, particularly anti-personnel guns. (more…)
Meltdown Comics, a Los Angeles landmark, is shutting down
Last night I learned that one of my favorite things about Los Angeles -- Meltdown Comics on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood -- is closing its doors after 25 years. It was always much more than a comic book store. It was a community center for creative nerds. It had a performance room and gallery, a podcast studio, and all kinds of fun pop-up stores-within-the-store.I interviewed many cartoonists there for live events over the years, including Dan Clowes and Ed Piskor, and our Dungeons and Dragons group played our game at a table on Sunday afternoons. I saw Ninja and Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord play and talk about their videos to a packed crowd in the back room. I bought bitcoin from its Bitcoin ATM. And I bought lots of great comic books and art books. I'm going to miss the place and LA won't be the same without them. Here's a letter from the owner of Meltdown Comics, Gaston Dominguez-Letelier:
Bozo the Clown's big red shoes have shuffled off this mortal coil
A number of fellas have played Bozo the Clown over the years. Frank Avruch was the best. The world became a little bit less joyful earlier this week in the wake of his death at the age of 89.Avruch played Bozo on TV during the height of the clown's popularity in the 1950s through to the 1970s. When not in front of the camera, Avruch wore the clown's smiling face and big, floppy shoes as a UNICEF Ambassador, bringing happiness to kids around the world. In 2007, his efforts for UNICEF were recognized by the United Nations.According to The Boston Globe, Avruch is survived by his with, two sons and a whack of grandchildren.

Tinkercad has a nifty Arduino simulator
Tinkercad is a web-based 3D design application. It's free and easy to use. I've been using it for years to design models for 3D printing. What I didn't know until recently is that Tinkercad also has a circuit design and simulation app, including an Arduino simulator. You can program the simulated Arduino with text or with Scratch-like drag-and-drop blocks. Here's the getting started page.

Clinically pleasant Invisalign ad dubbed with Bill Burr's ambivalent remarks about having to wear one
This ad, featuring happy people grinning in clinically perfect environments, is immeasurably improved by having its soundtrack replaced by remarks from comedian Bill Burr concerning his experience with the 3D-printed transparent braces. I found my way to it after reading this article about smarmy "free speech grifters" who decry political correctness while supporting the status quo: it leads with a funny anecdote whereby oleaginous creep Bill Maher expects Burr to agree with his anti-PC whining but is instead berated by him.

Dashcam video of fatal Uber collision released
The footage here shows the moment an autonomous Uber vehicle struck a pedestrian, 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, who later died in hospital from her injuries. The Uber had a human backup driver, but was driving autonomously when it hit Herzberg—the first time a pedestrian has been killed by a self-driving car.Released by the Tempe Police Vehicular Crimes Unit, the video (embedded below) shows Herzberg emerging suddenly from an area of complete darkness, on-foot, pushing her bicycle. This gave the human backup driver only a second to react, assuming the video's shadows accurately reflect the level of darkness a human would perceive. No machine vision data was released with the video, so it's still unknown what the Uber "saw" with its lidar system, which does not depend on the visible spectrum. The vehicle does not appear to react to Herzberg's presence. Sound is missing from the video posted by Tempe Police, as is any footage after the moment of the collision, so you can't tell if brakes were engaged or how the car or the backup human driver reacted during the impact.Cabin footage shows the human driver alert but focused mostly on the dashboard or something near the center console, looking up and noticing Herzberg only a moment before the impact. The video establishes that Herzberg carelessly walked into a dark street at night, and that the human backup driver's attention may have been divided. But it also suggests that the Uber failed to observe and react to the kind of everyday human inattention that we expect autonomous vehicles to navigate. The video:As posted on Twitter:https://twitter.com/TempePolice/status/976585098542833664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2018-03-21%2Fpolice-release-video-of-fatal-uber-autonomous-car-collision&tfw_site=technology

Michael Jackson is alive, Hillary is boozing, and a Buckingham Palace Sex Ring, in this week’s fact-challenged tabloids
When Hillary Clinton slipped on steps polished slick by centuries of wear while clad in smooth-soled sandals during her visit to India’s Jahaz Mahal last week, it was clear to every observer that her left shoe had simply lost traction as she almost fell.“Brain Cancer Battle!” screams this week's Globe cover, with its own medical interpretation of her stumble from half-way across the world. But that’s not all. “She’s back on booze,” reports the magazine for good measure, deciding that her near-fall can best be explained by a combination of “a killer brain tumor” and her decision “to throw caution to the wind and enjoy herself – by drinking!” Why they don’t think she’s shooting 8-balls and sniffing glue is beyond me.The award-winning Globe team of fact-checkers must be on vacation this week, because its exclusive on “Meghan Kidnap Terror!” reporting that “Special Forces Foil Plot to Snatch Harry’s Bride” turns out to have no plot and no terror: Miss Markle simply underwent training in a kidnap scenario, as have most of the British Royal Family, to better appreciate how to act in the event of a real kidnapping.“Michael Jackson is alive!” claims a Globe report, which even the rag admits is “mind-boggling,” alongside an autopsy photo of the pop icon beneath the words: “Real or Fake?” . . . a caption which the magazine should seriously consider affixing to every story. Jackson’s family and estate are allegedly in on the hoax. So where is the singer if he’s still alive? My guess is he’s on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame posing for photos with tourists for $5 a pop. What is “Luscious Loni’s Tragic Revenge” as ex-husband Burt Reynolds “fights to walk and control his bowels”? The Globe, which last week reveled in the allegation that Reynolds had to make a run for the toilet while filming a movie – Shock! Horror! – now claims that his ex, Loni Anderson, “is getting the last laugh” and exacting her revenge – by looking good. Are there no depths to which that woman won’t stoop?Memo to the National Enquirer: This word “caught” – it does not mean what you think it means.Prince Charles is “Caught in Palace Sex Ring!” claims the Enquirer, reporting that “Palace perverts” including the “Prince’s top aide ran vile network” for child sex. The story contains the merest sliver of truth, in reporting last month's child rape conviction of former British paratrooper Wayne Domeney, who once helped train Prince William and served alongside Prince Harry, and who decades earlier briefly met Prince Charles. But the allegation of a child sex ring run by Buckingham Palace employees is unrelated, and is also more than 40 years old: in the early 1970s a 16-year-old boy working in the Palace kitchens claimed that he was groomed for sex by Royal employees. The British Home Secretary decided there was insufficient evidence to investigate, and the unsubstantiated allegation has largely been forgotten. Or, as a supposed “palace insider” calmly tells the Enquirer: “This is the scandal that could finally sink the monarchy.” Right.“Stars Caught on Heidi Fleiss Sex Tapes!” screams an Enquirer headline. But no celebrities were actually “caught" on sex tapes, the story reveals. It’s just a list of celebrity names that convicted Hollywood Madam Fleiss reportedly reeled off in conversation, allegedly “caught” on secret FBI tapes. But even the Enquirer admits, deep within its story, “there’s no evidence these men frequented hookers.” It’s just a list of stars she claimed to know, but that apparently gives the Enquirer the freedom to include with the story photos of celebrities who Fleiss apparently never named, including Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp and Warren Beatty. If this sounds familiar, that’s because the Enquirer ran virtually the same story back on May 30, 2016, claiming it had access to Heidi’s “Black Book” – when it didn’t.Us magazine devotes its cover to the sordid demise of Donald Trump Jr.’s marriage, claiming that betrayed wife Vanessa Trump confronted her husband’s mistress, reality TV star Aubrey O’Day, and put Trump Jr.'s five-year-old daughter on the phone to shame the marriage-wrecker. It’s a made-for-TV scandal – expect President Trump to co-produce – but the showdown occurred back in March 2012, which means that for the past five years Vanessa has been suffering through her enduring marriage with philandering Don Jr., and for the past year lost her husband to another love rival: the White House and the Russian scandal.People magazine also goes big on Don Jr.’s split, reporting that Vanessa found their marriage “stifling,” while an unnamed source claims that “Don Jr.’s become isolated, distant and just plain angry.” Poor thing.Fortunately we have the crack investigative team at Us magazine to tell us that Blake Lively wore it best, that America’s Funniest Home Videos host Alfonso Ribeiro will “moisturize every day,” that singer Toni Braxton is a “germaphobe” who carries Wet Wipes and Purell in her Fendi purse, and that the stars are just like us: they tote luggage, grocery shop and pump gas into their cars. But then the stars go and ruin it as Us shows us Justin Bieber’s second Lamborghini, the Ferraris belonging to Drake, Kylie Jenner and G-Eazy, and Patrick Dempsey and Chris Pine with their classic Porsche 356s.Headline of the week, in the National Examiner: “Intuition: Do you have it?” If you have to ask . . .Onwards and downwards . . .

CIA's Brennan: Trump is "afraid" of Putin and "has something to fear"

He goes on to say that Trump has a "fawning attitude" towards Putin and has not said anything negative towards him...he has something to fear."Brennan also says that he has worked with six presidents, and although he didn't agree with some of their policies, "all of them, ALL of them were trying to do what they thought was best for the United States. That's not Mr. Trump."In the interview Brennan refers to Trump as "mean-spirited," "dishonest," "self absorbed," and showing "a lack of integrity," and said "our future is in jeopardy while Mr. Trump continues his antics."He looks at the camera and says to Trump, "America will triumph over you."

New York Filmed in 1929 with Sound
I was in New York City this past weekend—a place where no one uses the word “Manhattan”—and spent some time fighting the other pedestrians in order to walk down the street, and fighting the cars to cross from Third Avenue to Second Avenue.New York is always insanely busy. I lived there until 31 years of age and couldn’t wait to get out. I had assumed, perhaps naively, that it was a more peaceful place almost a century ago. Apparently not! What is surprising about the two videos below, which were apparently filmed with a camera on the back of a flatbed truck while driving around, is how crowded the city was even in 1929. The sounds of streetcars and people are omnipresent. The city looks more interesting, and more appealing, in black and white. Color often makes it seem garish or dirty ... at least to me.Now for your bit of time travel today.https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=13&v=saFIpM-y7oMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx7rrYSslYc

Ben Carson now blaming his own wife for the $31,000 dining set
Nothing like a husband who throws his own wife under the bus. And that's just what "The Honorable Ben Carson" (yes, take a look, his desk placard actually says that!) did when he explained to a House committee hearing today that his wife, Candy, was the one who bought the $31,000 mahogany dining set for his office without his knowledge.“If it were up to me my office would probably look like a hospital waiting room, but at any rate, I invited my wife to come along and help me," the good doctor says, referring to redecorating his office. He then says that the old dining set was dangerous, with nails sticking out of it, and needed to be replaced, so he was given a catalog to look at. "The prices were beyond what I wanted to pay, I made it clear that that just didn't seem right to me, and I left it with my wife."And then it was the wifey who purchased the outrageously priced dining set, which he knew nothing about, because, well, he had so many other more important things to do. Wow, with husbands like that, who needs husbands?
