Dallas Cowboys fans got a good look at linebacker Jaylon Smith's health as the team began training camp this week. The early returns are mixed.Smith sat out last year's training camp and his entire rookie season after tearing up his knee in his final game at Notre Dame, but the damaged nerves in his leg have reportedly shown signs of regeneration and Smith was cleared for limited work at this summer's camp. In the video above, Smith (No. 54) looks explosive as he runs through drills. Not all video evidence from camp is positive, however, as Smith appeared tentative and perhaps even hobbled at the end of his run on this play:

Baltimore Ravens running back Kenneth Dixon suffered a tear in his meniscus and will undergo surgery, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Dixon was already scheduled to miss the first four games of the season under a PED suspension. It remains unclear whether the injury will further delay his regular-season debut. The Ravens are hopeful the surgery required will be minor, according to Rapoport.Regardless of whether he misses additional games, Dixon's knee injury will force him to miss valuable reps at camp. Terrance West is expected to handle early-down work for the Ravens in Dixon's absence, with free-agent addition Danny Woodhead handling passing downs.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Matt Williamson is a former scout for the Cleveland Browns and spent 10 years at ESPN as a scout and co-host of "The Football Today Podcast."The NFL season is right around the corner, and this year's Hall of Fame inductions will rightfully kick off the campaign. The 2017 class is composed of Morton Anderson, Terrell Davis, Kenny Easley, Jerry Jones, Jason Taylor, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Kurt Warner. Over the next two weeks, we'll highlight the four best-known players - Warner, Tomlinson, Davis, and Taylor. This edition covers Davis.Over the past few years, there has been a lot of back and forth debating if Davis is Hall of Fame worthy. Those against his induction cited that Davis didn’t have a particularly long career and that Mike Shanahan’s system inflates a running back’s production. No one suggested Davis wasn’t a great player, just not on par with Tomlinson and other enshrined running backs. However, the case for Davis is strong. Does John Elway end his Hall of Fame career as a Super Bowl champion without Davis? Certainly not. Late in Elway’s career, that offense went through Davis.Davis played in the NFL for seven seasons, but because of a terrible knee injury, only appeared in 17 regular season games during his final three years and only rushed for 1,194 yards over that final stretch. However, Davis appeared in 14 games during his rookie season, averaged 4.7 yards per carry and eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards. His next three seasons were insane though. During the 1996-1998 regular seasons, Davis missed just one game. He rushed for just under 5,300 yards over that time including a 2,000 season 1998 when he averaged over five yards per carry. Davis also scored 53 touchdowns over that magical span. He was an unstoppable force.Davis ran very hard and maximized his talents. He played the game the right way and got every yard out of his body that he possibly could. Compared to other Hall of Fame runners, Davis’ highlight tape won’t wow you, but he was nimble with light feet and explosive cutting skills.(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)Davis also broke off his share of long runs and had underrated pure speed. But the greatest thing Davis brought to the table during his four-year stretch was reliability and finishing skills. You could just lean on this guy and he would take care of business. While he fit the Broncos' system very well with his intelligence, vision and propensity for keeping his pads square to the line of scrimmage with great efficiency, he certainly wasn't just a product of the system. While other runners posted big numbers under Shanahan, none of their tape was as impressive as Davis’.And Davis was a mad man in the postseason. How about these stats: Davis appeared in eight postseason games from 1996 to 1998. Not only did he score a dozen touchdowns in those games, but he rushed for 1,140 yards against the best of competition at the most important time of the year including a record seven straight 100-yard games in the postseason. That’s an average of 142.5 yards per game in the playoffs! In the receiving game, Davis was a solid option. He caught 49 passes as a rookie, but that was his highest seasonal output in that department. While Davis certainly had good hands and was a strong weapon in the screen game, he wasn’t nearly as dangerous or as versatile as someone like Tomlinson. The first seven years that Davis was eligible for the Hall of Fame he wasn’t even a finalist, meaning he was not one of the final 15 players eligible for induction. With all due respect to Davis, who clearly was a great player, three historically great seasons and one very good rookie year isn’t enough to be a Hall of Fame running back. But he certainly was a heck of a player for a short period of time.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Despite reports of the contrary, Dez Bryant is expecting the Dallas Cowboys' triplets to be in full force come the start of the season.Bryant said Monday that he doesn't think Ezekiel Elliott will face a suspension for the domestic violence allegations leveled against him."I believe Zeke is going to be fine," Bryant said, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. "I'm not even worrying about Zeke, because that guy loves football. I understand there is more than football, but time will tell. He's got a great supporting cast. He can't lose with guys like us around him."The NFL is reportedly nearing the conclusion of its investigation, which stems from a pair of claims brought against Elliott by his ex-girlfriend, one in February 2016 and one the following July. He wasn't arrested or charged in connection with either alleged incident.Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been vocal in his support of his star running back, saying Sunday that he's viewed all the evidence in the case and has seen "absolutely nothing" to suggest Elliott is guilty.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL training camps are opening up this week as offseason fodder becomes preseason fodder. One of the deepest traps fans can fall into during training camp is buying into the stereotypical quotes that don't really mean anything. It's an easy mistake to make after waiting for months for something meaningful to be said in the NFL.In an effort to keep excitement levels somewhat even with expectations, here's a quick guide to parsing over-hyped training camp talk."This is as good a team as I've ever been around."Most likely to hear from: Cowboys, Dolphins, Jaguars, Titans, Eagles, Buccaneers, PatriotsCamp hasn't even begun and Jerry Jones already used this one. For anyone on a team that had a breakout 2016 and didn't lose too many pieces, or on a team that made a bunch of offseason moves, it's an unverifiable claim that can used to pump up existing excitement or garner attention if the outlook is bland."I'm in the best shape of my life."Most likely to hear from: Keenan Allen, Robert Nkemdiche, Adrian Peterson, Jaylon Smith, Laquon Treadwell, Carson Palmer, Jamaal CharlesAre you coming off an injury, or a young player who struggled to jump from college to pros, or a really old veteran? Well, here's the quote for you. There's been very little, if any, contact to cause injury. It's still early in camp. You haven't played at game speed in months. You've had plenty of time to relax and recover at your own pace. Of course you feel like you're in great shape!"We can compete with anybody."Most likely to hear from: Jets, Browns, Bears, 49ers, JaguarsTechnically, if you can line up a 53-man roster and make it to the stadium on time, you can compete with anyone. This is code for "we might not get blown out every game." Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson said his team will win the Super Bowl this season, which was so far past this version of the quote that no one found it remotely believable."There's a different energy around the team this year."Most likely to hear from: Cowboys, Steelers, Giants, Texans, SaintsAdding a big-name player, filling a longtime position of need, or just being a young team can bring a different energy or vibe to a club. The feeling that things are noticeably different for a good reason can create a new aura around any team willing to be optimistic."We're getting better every day."Most likely to hear from: EveryoneThat's the point of training camp - to get better every day."The guys are really buying into the system."Most likely to hear from: Rams, Bills, Broncos, Chargers, 49ersIf your team got a new coaching staff this offseason, you better believe there's a new system coming in. And if you expect your players to want to play under the new coaches, you ought to expect that they're really buying into that new system."I'm excited to compete."Most likely to hear from: Someone probably about to lose their roster spotIf you know your roster spot is safe, you would be excited for camp to be over.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of Lucky Whitehead on Monday despite his agent, Dave Rich, claiming the wide receiver wasn't in Virginia during the time of the alleged incident which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The warrant was issued after Whitehead failed to appear in court July 6 on a charge of shoplifting. The 25-year-old was allegedly busted for shoplifting under $200 on June 22 around 1:30 a.m., but Rich says the receiver's flight didn't arrive in Washington D.C. until 11.30 a.m. later that day.Rich said Whitehead didn't appear in court because he never received the citation and summons. The agent added he has a copy of the ticket as proof and told the Cowboys this information. "It's just unfortunate for the kid," Rich said."I didn't even know about that. I don't know what's going on," Whitehead said Monday when asked about the incident at Cowboys camp.Whitehead was likely a long shot to make the roster, but it's a curious decision by the Cowboys to cut ties before getting a clearer picture on his legal situation.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Tamba Hali kicked up a storm Saturday by airing his disappointment over his dwindling role with the Kansas City Chiefs and questioning the commitment of some of his teammates on Twitter.Andy Reid responded to Hali's outburst Monday, saying he respected the linebacker's desire for more playing time while expressing his wish for those type of issues to be kept in-house."The fact that the guy wants to get out there and go, absolutely but let's not do it through tweeting or whatever he did," said Reid, according to NFL.com's Marc Sessler.Hali refused to back off his criticism of his teammates during an "Arrowheads Abroad Podcast" on Saturday, but didn't name any names."I'm not going to shy from it - I think it's important, especially if you're on our team and you're one of our leaders - that you should be always there," Hali said, according to Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star. "I don't want to say names, but I've been there for (12 years) and I haven't missed one offseason with the Chiefs."While Hali didn't point any fingers, this was likely a reference to star players Eric Berry, Justin Houston, and Marcus Peters missing all of OTAs, according to Paylor. However, Reid played down any suggestion of a rift in the locker room and acknowledged that any player is within their rights to miss the voluntary portion of the offseason."It's something, as a coach, it's out of your hands. You want everybody here. It's a voluntary camp," Reid said. "Tamba sounded like an angry coach there and he doesn't need to go there and do all that. Again those (guys) understand Tamba better (than) anybody. Every team goes through this - there are guys there and not there and because of the voluntary part of that. That's what it is and we go with it."He added, "All three of those guys (Berry, Houston, and Peters) are good players. Two are leaders and will continue to be leaders on the team. You don't know (the) reasons why they weren't here. You don't know all those things. You have to look at the big picture of things and see how it works. Other guys are going to come in here and they'll be fine."Reid didn't comment on Hali's future with the team or if his demands for a greater role will be granted, so it remains to be seen whether the pass-rusher's unhappiness will bleed into the regular season.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Carolina Panthers star tight end Greg Olsen won't hold out from training camp and will report with the rest of his teammates Tuesday, a source told Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer. Olsen was considering staying away in order to gain leverage for a new contract from the Panthers, expressing his dissatisfaction with the two years and $13 million total left on his current deal on multiple occasions. The 32-year-old is reportedly seeking an extension that would make him one of the top-paid players at his position. He ranks seventh in average salary ($7.5 million) and 12th in guaranteed money ($12 million).Olsen's decision to report may have something to do with the Panthers' change in general manager.Last week, Carolina fired Dave Gettleman, who was reportedly unwilling to give in to Olsen's demands. The Panthers replaced him with Marty Hurney on an interim basis. Hurney acquired the veteran pass-catcher via trade in 2011 during his first stint in charge of the franchise.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Broncos and general manager/vice president John Elway have agreed to a new five-year contract extension that will keep him in Denver through the 2021 season, the team announced Monday."We're pleased to reach an agreement on a five-year contract with John to continue leading our football operations," Broncos president and CEO Joe Ellis said. "During these last six seasons, John's clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports. He's demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen, and a consistent ability to build competitive teams."There's no doubt John means a great deal to the Broncos, our fans and the entire community. It was important for us to reach this long-term agreement, and we're all excited to now turn our full attention toward the 2017 season."As reportedly expected, Elway's new deal is expected to make him the NFL's highest paid in his position, though the figures are not yet known, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter, who first broke the news.Elway will apparently blow the ceiling off the market, earning just under double that of the current highest-paid GMs, Ozzie Newsome of the Baltimore Ravens and John Schneider of the Seattle Seahawks, who both make $3.75 million a year. It's hard to argue that Elway doesn't deserve his big payday, however. The 57-year-old has overseen a highly successful period for the Broncos, in which they've posted a winning record in every season and appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one in 2015.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Despite Tom Brady serving a four-game suspension to begin the year, the New England Patriots breezed through the AFC effortlessly, compiling a league-best 14-2 record before winning Super Bowl LI. Brady submitted one of the best seasons of his storied career upon returning and the Patriots operated in a different tier than the rest of the NFL.The Patriots were far from complacent this summer, adding Brandin Cooks, Stephon Gilmore, Mike Gillislee, Dwayne Allen, and Kony Ealy among others, fortifying their roster while leaving their competition in the dust. It's possible that someone will unseat the Patriots this fall, but their direct competition doesn't appear to be capable of doing so. Can the Dolphins, Bills, or Jets knock off the defending champions against all odds?Miami Dolphins It was a tale of two seasons for the Dolphins, seemingly consigned to doom after starting the season 1-4, while many questioned head coach Adam Gase's direction during his first year with the club. In large part due to a tremendous campaign from running back Jay Ajayi, the Dolphins steadied themselves and snuck into the playoffs at 10-6. Which Dolphins team is going to show up this year?Miami's defense is brimming with top-level talent, as Cameron Wake, Ndamukong Suh, and Reshad Jones are among the best players at their positions. This trio will be counted upon to keep the Dolphins in the playoff race in 2017. If the Dolphins can continue to get meaningful contributions from Kiko Alonso, free-agent signing Lawrence Timmons, and Byron Maxwell, this should be a team that finishes better than 18th in scoring defense.Ajayi was one of the surprise revelations of the 2016 season and if he can play at the pace he did during the second half of the year, the Dolphins ought to operate the offense through him. Ryan Tannehill has often been maligned unfairly during his career, but boasting a wide-receiver corps of Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, and Kenny Stills, the Dolphins should keep teams off balance next fall. Will the Dolphins unseat the Patriots? Barring a miracle, probably not. Can the Dolphins return to the postseason? They'll certainly be in the thick of the race again.Buffalo BillsThe Bills enter the 2017 season with an entirely new regime in place, with Sean McDermott installed as head coach, while Brandon Beane takes over as general manager. McDermott was allowed to hire his own staff, and made it clear that his philosophy is diametrically opposed to that of Rex Ryan's, whose final year with the club was a ceaseless calamity.Buffalo resolved a potential contractual disaster with Tyrod Taylor for the time being, and the quarterback is now given the keys to an offense, that seems poised to maintain a run-heavy scheme in order to get results. Taylor will need to rely on Sammy Watkins and second-round pick Zay Jones, although the former's perpetual foot injuries are reason for concern. LeSean McCoy returns as one of the NFL's premier running backs, and this is a unit that could surprise in 2017.McDermott is a defensive specialist and him along with coordinator Leslie Frazier are tasked with actualizing the potential of a talented, underachieving unit. The Bills will have to hope that Lorenzo Alexander's Pro Bowl campaign wasn't a fluke, while 2016 first- and second-round picks Shaq Lawson and Reggie Ragland will return to action after missing significant time with injury - the latter of whom missed the entire year with a torn ACL.The Bills are more talented than most realize; whether they can actualize it remains the compelling question. In any event, the Bills won't unseat the Patriots but they could get the first playoff spot of the millennium if McDermott can transition seamlessly.New York Jets The Jets are projected to be so awful this season that many analysts have floated the notion of them openly tanking. With Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg vying for playing time at quarterback, the Jets will be miserable for a while before entertaining the idea of postseason contention.New York released Brandon Marshall, Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis, Marcus Gilchrist, and a handful of other veterans, in an ostensible attempt to begin its rebuild anew. It's hard to imagine that a roster relying largely on rookies and journeymen will rise above the .500 mark, let alone knock off the Patriots. This will be a trying year for Jets fans, but at least next summer's draft is supposed to be loaded with franchise-level quarterbacks. Also from this series

Get ready for your season with theScore's 2017 Fantasy Football Draft KitFootball is back. While we're still 10 days away from preseason action, NFL players have returned to the practice field as several teams have begun training camps, with the rest kicking things off this week. This is the time when fantasy players are desperate for clues that will help them get an edge on their competitors.Let's take a look at five storylines you should be paying close attention to during training camp.Is John Brown back healthy? Two years ago, Brown posted his first 1,000-yard season and appeared to be the next star in the Cardinals' receiving corps. Unfortunately, his health didn't cooperate as his 2016 campaign was hijacked by issues with his sickle cell trait and a cyst on his spine.Offseason reports suggest Brown has returned to his 2015 form after having the cyst removed, but his hype train was derailed again when a hamstring injury sidelined him during OTAs.Brown's consensus ADP has him going off the board in the 12th round as the WR49, which is insane for a player that carries top-24 upside if he can put his health issues behind him.How does Christian McCaffrey fit into the Panthers' offense?Seeing how McCaffrey, and to a lesser extent Curtis Samuel, are deployed by the Panthers will be one of the most interesting stories across all camps.Carolina wasn't shy about its desire to add McCaffrey, using the eighth overall pick on the well-rounded back, who it hopes will bring a new element to the offense. It's not a knock on Jonathan Stewart, but the veteran isn't exactly a dynamic pass-catching threat out of the backfield and Cam Newton hasn't been prone to using his backs as receivers, so McCaffrey's arrival will require some getting used to.McCaffrey's third-round price tag in fantasy drafts is a bit steep considering the team may still use Stewart on early downs. However, if McCaffrey proves he can handle more of the workload, the potential for him to deliver a top-12 fantasy season does exist. Can the new coaching staff bring life to the Rams' offense?Sean McVay's ability to get the most out of Kirk Cousins and the Redskins' offense helped land him the head coaching job with the Rams. Now the degree of difficulty becomes far greater as he attempts to resurrect the Rams' offense, while trying to help Jared Goff avoid the bust label. For fantasy purposes, it's best to stay away from any element of the Rams' passing game until we see if either overpaid free-agent Robert Woods or rookie Cooper Kupp can emerge as a volume player. The real focus in training camp will be on Todd Gurley, who was one of the biggest fantasy disappointments in 2016. The new system coupled with some improvements on the offensive line could get Gurley back into RB1 territory, but he'll need to generate some positive buzz in camp before fantasy owners are willing to trust him again.Which Packers rookie RB will win the No. 2 job?Everyone is in love with Ty Montgomery - and for good reason. The former receiver flashed elite skills when the Packers moved him to running back last season and he enters camp as the starter in the high-powered, Aaron Rodgers-led Green Bay offense. But there are a couple of reasons to question Montgomery's hold on the No. 1 job. The first being that he's only handled 12 carries or more once in an NFL game, and the second being that the Packers invested so heavily in running backs during the draft with Jamaal Williams (fourth round), Aaron Jones (fifth round) and Devante Mays (seventh round).Williams and Jones will battle it out over the next month for the right to serve as Montgomery's immediate backup, a spot that could be extremely valuable in fantasy if the incumbent fails to live up to expectations. Will Brandon Marshall be a difference-maker for the Giants? It's easy to see why people would be excited for his arrival on the Giants. Marshall has always produced big numbers in his first season on a new team, averaging 1,505 yards and 12.5 touchdowns in his debut campaigns with the Bears and Jets. He also gives Eli Manning a legitimate weapon across from Odell Beckham Jr., making the Giants' passing attack look extremely dangerous - at least on paper.Marshall is 33 years old and coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro. While he should give the team another quality red-zone option, it's hard not to compare his situation to Andre Johnson joining the Colts in 2015. Johnson was 34 years old and still considered to be an impact player, but in a new jersey he looked like a shell of his former self and failed to make his mark in Indy.Marshall isn't likely to fall off a cliff as fast as Johnson did, but it's not out of the realm of possibility and fantasy owners would be wise to temper their projections for the newest G-Man.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The 23-year-old made 53 catches as a rookie and followed that up with 61 a season ago, so the prospect of a permanent move to receiver isn't crazy.Indeed, switching positions seems to be en vogue in the NFL. Last year, converted quarterback Terrelle Pryor led the Browns in receiving. Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery is an example of a player moving the opposite direction - he began 2016 as a receiver and finished as a tailback. The Browns were lauded for their offseason additions, but they are still a team that lacks talent on both sides of the ball. If the team believes Isaiah Crowell can be a workhorse starter at running back, finding a way to get Johnson on the field at the same time and elevate the overall talent level of the offense makes perfect sense.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. For the first time in 15 years, the Dallas Cowboys will enter a season without Tony Romo on the roster. It was admittedly a scary proposition for team owner Jerry Jones, a noted Romo fan, but with a big gulp, he's managed.Jones talked about his quarterback situation on Sunday as the Cowboys gathered in Oxnard, Calif., for training camp and he said he's at peace, especially with reigning offensive Rookie of the Year Dak Prescott at the helm."I'm a lot more comfortable than I ever thought I'd be," Jones said, Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com writes. "This time last year and beyond, not having Romo ... that has every to do with the year Dak had."More importantly, the way Dak is approaching this year. We have a really good feeling about Dak. All of that makes this a lot more palatable and comfortable than I ever thought I'd be not having Romo on the team."Romo announced in April he would retire from football in order to pursue a broadcasting career and has since joined the CBS Sports team. Prior to that, the Cowboys considered trading or releasing Romo who was due an expensive contract though he had been surpassed on the depth chart by Prescott. The Cowboys enter the 2017 campaign with Prescott, Kellen Moore, Cooper Rush, and Zac Dysert at quarterback.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. This edition covers LT.A fantastic and highly productive player at TCU, Tomlinson was the fifth overall pick by San Diego in a 2001 draft class that saw Michael Vick go first overall. Incidentally, the Chargers also selected Drew Brees - a future Hall of Famer in his own right - in the second round of that draft.Tomlinson burst on the scene with over 1,600 total yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season. For eight years in a row, he rushed for over 1,000 yards, including back-to-back 1,600-yard seasons in 2002 and 2003 and an amazing 1,815-yard season in 2006.Tomlinson also averaged slightly over 475 receiving yards across those first eight years. And in that 2003 season, he combined for 2,370 yards from scrimmage and 17 touchdowns. Needless to say, if you were lucky enough to have the first overall pick in your fantasy draft during those years, Tomlinson was an easy selection. And he never let you down. But what made Tomlinson truly special? This was a running back that had it all.His balance was as good as any back in the league, as he played low and didn’t give tacklers much to hit. His feet were tremendous, as both his change of direction and lateral agility were superb. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon for him to jump-cut two gaps. For example, he could be heading toward the A-gap between a guard and the center and laterally explode to accelerate through the C-gap outside the tackle. Few runners can pull this off.(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)Tomlinson had power, acceleration, and speed. He was an elite short-yardage back and a touchdown-producing machine who scored double-digit TDs in every one of his seasons with the Chargers. He even scored a ridiculous 31 touchdowns in a 2006 season in which he won the MVP award. Oh, and he also threw seven TD passes during his career! And yet, despite everything else he brought to the table, LT's receiving ability set him apart - especially during the era he played in. Of all the running backs currently in the top 10 all time in rushing yardage, only Marshall Faulk caught more passes than Tomlinson.Of course, it wasn’t all that long ago, and Tomlinson rightfully didn’t have to wait long before gaining induction into the Hall of Fame. But he did face fewer nickel and dime defenses than receiving backs do today. That obviously helped him in the passing game - as he was often abusing linebackers - but it also made running room a bit scarcer than it might be for someone like David Johnson or Le’Veon Bell today.Tomlinson was in Johnson and Bell’s class as a receiver, though, and if he played today, would probably be used in that capacity even more - even though he did catch 100 passes in just his third NFL season. No one in history had ever rushed for 1,000 yards and caught 100 passes in the same campaign before Tomlinson.Philip Rivers did a great job pre-snap of getting Tomlinson into mismatches in San Diego’s favor, but the game has recently expanded even further for receiving backs. In the end, Tomlinson would have been special in any era and truly ranks among the best running backs in the history of the game. But in a way, he was also a little before his time.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Even with superstars Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown leading the Steelers' passing game, Pittsburgh became a run-first offense in 2016 thanks to the exceptional talents of Le'Veon Bell.Bell performed at an All-Pro-level after a three-game ban to start the year, but his efforts weren't enough to convince the Steelers to hand him the type of long-term contract he was seeking this offseason.Related - Report: Bell turned down deal worth $42M over first 3 years; $12M averageInstead, Bell will play out 2017 on the $12.1-million franchise tag, and Brown hopes the Steelers eventually lock up their "special piece" on offense for the foreseeable future."We need him. I need him," Brown said Sunday, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "If we're going to do what we desire to do, we need every guy a part of the organization in a helmet to be there committed to the cause. He's a special piece. Obviously, we know what he brings to the team, his dimension playing football, but he's a special individual. I pray that we have him there."Brown said he and Bell spoke for two hours Saturday night, but refused to go into details about the conversation, calling it "top secret."Bell is pushing to reinvigorate the running-back market, which has been depressed in recent years as teams look for more affordable options. However, it remains to be seen whether the Steelers are willing to meet Bell's demands given his injury and suspension history, as well as the brief primes of elite running backs.Even with Bell becoming the focal point of the offense, Brown exceeded 100 catches last year for the fourth straight season. No player in NFL history has ever produced five straight such campaigns.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

For the first time since 2006, the Minnesota Vikings enter a season without longtime franchise player Adrian Peterson. With Peterson now with the New Orleans Saints, the task of replacing him will likely fall onto the shoulders of rookie Dalvin Cook, who rebuffed any suggestion Sunday that he will be able to immediately fill the cleats of one of the franchise's all-time great players."That wouldn't be fair to him. He's a future Hall of Famer. This is my first year in the NFL. I ain't as close to him," Cook said, according to scout.com's Tim Yotter. "I can't compare myself to him at all. He's going to go down as one of the greatest backs in history so I've just got to go out there and work and I can't have that in my head. Adrian Peterson is one of the greats, one of the people I look up to, so I can't compare myself to him."Cook is the future of the Vikings' backfield after being taken in the second round, but he's no lock to secure the starting job from Day 1. Minnesota signed Latavius Murray following three successful seasons with the Oakland Raiders, and Jerick McKinnon will likely push for a third-down role. However, Cook welcomes the competition."We're going to push each other and I think the good thing about this backfield is we've got some workhorses in the backfield," Cook said. "We've got guys that are going to push each other to the next level and get the best out of each other. Having those two guys in the meeting room with me is good because that never lets you get comfortable with yourself."Cook looked like a slam-dunk first-rounder at Florida State, but a subpar combine sent his draft stock into a nosedive. He likely couldn't have found a better landing spot, though, as the similarities between Florida State and the Vikings' run-game schemes mean his transition to the pro level should be smooth."We're running the same thing - zone, inside zone, outside zone, it allows me to catch the ball. I just think getting the ball in my hands as many ways as possible. That's where I can make plays. I did the same thing at Florida State," Cook said. "That's why I think this situation is so unique - I'm in the same situation. I've just got to take advantage of it."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. This time last year, DeAndre Hopkins stayed away from training camp for a solitary day in order to get the Houston Texans to the negotiating table for a new contract. With the Texans set to report to this season's camp Monday, Hopkins won't try the same tactic and will report with the rest of his teammates, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter, despite the receiver still lacking the new long-term contract he desires.Hopkins is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to earn $7.915 million. Texans general manager Rick Smith said in March that his team is "absolutely intent" on locking up their key offensive weapon for the foreseeable future.Despite a relatively forgettable 2016 in which he fell 46 yards short of a 1,000-yard season, Hopkins remains one of the top wideouts in the game, and the Texans will likely have to pay him as such if they want to avoid souring their relationship once again.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett spoke with running back Ezekiel Elliott as the team collected in Oxnard, Calif. for training camp, per Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News.Elliott's name has been splashed across news feeds as he faces a potential suspension for a 2016 domestic abuse accusation and was initially believed to be involved in an altercation at a Dallas bar last weekend. Garrett promised to sit down with his back before getting down to football."We believe very strongly in Zeke as a person and as a player," Garrett said Sunday, according to Rob Phillips of dallascowboys.com."Having said that, he's not perfect," the coach added, per David Helman of the Cowboys official website.Team owner Jerry Jones opined on the topic and insisted he has a "high bar" and low tolerance for suspendable offenses, reports Kate Hairopoulos of The Dallas Morning News. Richard Sherman has again been asked to characterize his relationship with quarterback Russell Wilson and he continues to assert that things are "phenomenal."Earlier in the offseason, ESPN's Seth Wickersham reported that infighting infiltrated the Seattle Seahawks and, in particular, that Sherman doesn't get along with Wilson. Sherman further refuted that in an interview that aired Sunday."We're pros. We hang out from time to time. We get along. Everybody gets along," Sherman said to ESPN's Josina Anderson."But is my relationship with Russell the same as it is with Doug (Baldwin)? Or the same as it is with Bobby (Wagner)? No. But is his relationship with me the same as it is with Noe (Tyler Lockett) or (Justin) Britt? It's just different dynamics. But as teammates, we're phenomenal."Sherman and Wilson have won a Super Bowl together and come within inches of a second. The cornerback said the whole 53-man roster doesn't have to get along in order to produce results."Every single person on every single team doesn't hang out. Kyrie Irving shocked the basketball world this week when it was revealed he had reportedly asked for a trade from the only team he's ever known, the Cleveland Cavaliers. The bombshell continued a whirlwind offseason in the Association.Over in the NFL, things are much calmer as teams prepare for training camp. It's a rarity for football players to make a request like Irving's, but nevertheless, there are at least three players who would be justified in doing so.Here are three NFL stars who should force their way out of their current situations:Richard Sherman, SeahawksSherman was the focal point of an offseason in which his general manager and coach both admitted the star cornerback was actively being shopped.Sherman has put together an impressive resume over his six years in Seattle. Aside from being a three-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, he helped the Seahawks win one Super Bowl and come a yard short of another. He had a number of blowups directed at teammates and coaches in 2016, however. As trade speculation grew in the spring, Sherman reportedly would only accept a move to a contender. An ideal landing spot exists in the Atlanta Falcons. The club is led by former Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and, coming off Super Bowl heartbreak, the Falcons could use an injection of vitality.Sherman's name has been dragged through the mud the last number of months, and he could benefit from a change of scenery.Kirk Cousins, RedskinsThe reasons for Cousins to force his way out of Washington are obvious. Slapped with the franchise tag for two years running, the Redskins quarterback was reportedly lowballed in contract negotiations. Oh, and the team president doesn't even know his first name.Cousins has responded to these matters with little more than a shrug, but he could do better by forcing Washington's hand. Armed with the $23.9 million guaranteed he'll earn from the franchise tag this season, Cousins can free himself from the Redskins and the turmoil that surrounds the organization by demanding a trade. Washington doesn't have to grant such a request, but it would benefit Cousins to get out of dodge as soon as possible rather than risk injury playing another year in D.C. before hitting the free-agent market again in 2018.There remain several teams in need of a quarterback of Cousins' caliber, and an ideal fit exists with former Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers.Tamba Hali, ChiefsHali made news Saturday when he unexpectedly griped about his role and playing time with the Chiefs in 2016.The veteran pass-rusher complained that he'd only seen seven snaps in the Chiefs' divisional-round playoff loss against the Steelers last season and questioned whether he has a future with the club. He's given the franchise 11 seasons and still has plenty to offer a team in need of his services.Recognizing the Chiefs' championship window is closing and that his contract carries a potential out after this upcoming season, Hali can force the team's hand and get out of town before its reconstruction around eventual starting pivot Patrick Mahomes. A team like the Dallas Cowboys is ready and waiting with open arms for a veteran of his quality.(Photos courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The New York Giants are sounding plenty confident these days, and for good reason.Landon Collins "highly doubts" the Dallas Cowboys can repeat as division champs over New York, while Jason Pierre-Paul sees his team taking down everyone on its schedule. After jumping from a 6-10 record to an 11-5 season between 2015 and 2016, the Giants believe they can make another leap in 2017. Here are five reasons why they might be right:Elite defenseFrom front to back, the Giants have one of the best defenses in the NFL - particularly in the front and the back.New York's linebacking corps is lacking star playmakers, but with all the talent on the defensive line and in the secondary, those second-level defenders just need to do their jobs.Collins, Janoris Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Eli Apple, and Andrew Adams are perhaps the best five-man secondary unit in the league - at least according to Pro Football Focus. Their second season together should result in even better production.Pierre-Paul, Damon Harrison, and Olivier Vernon formed one of the best run-stuffing units in 2016, while notching quite a few sacks. They've replaced Johnathan Hankins with second-rounder Dalvin Tomlinson, but, like the secondary, another season together for the big three linemen should only improve their dominance.Revamped receiver corpsThe Giants' passing game will be fun to watch in 2017.Odell Beckham Jr. continues to improve every season (he's only entering his fourth year, too, remember), while Brandon Marshall will no longer be the primary focus of opposing defenses, leaving plenty of space for Sterling Shepard, the second-leading rookie receiver in 2016.The Giants also drafted speedy tight end Evan Engram, who may take time to adjust to the pro-style attack, but will be a matchup nightmare once he figures it out.Marshall's arrival will also create an advantage over any team that doesn't have a complete secondary.Eli's still EliEli Manning's numbers have never been staggeringly impressive from a year-to-year point of view, but he's within reach of the sixth-most all-time passing yards this season. His production dipped last year, but the last time his numbers dropped in the same capacity, the veteran responded with two career seasons.Season Yards TDs INTs201239482615201338181827201444103014201544323514201640272616This is the best receiver corps Manning has had, coming to him as his window for another championship closes. While his facial expression will remain the same, his motivation should rise to a new level.Sneaky scheduleThe Giants will need to face the Cowboys twice this season, but they get the advantage of playing a late-season matchup at home in December.Outside their division, the Packers and Seahawks pose the greatest threats in the NFC, but Green Bay isn't on the Giants' 2017 schedule, and Seattle will have to come across the country in Week 7 to play in New York. The Giants won't play at home in consecutive weeks until Week 14-15, but that also means New York gets to finish the season playing three of four games at MetLife. With all three of those games being against divisional opponents, the Giants are set up to either make up ground or establish a firm lead in the NFC East race at a crucial time.Confidence over contendersThe Giants are a team on the rise, but have the veteran experience to know how to take the next step. They have a level of excitement similar to the Seahawks in 2012, with a much more veteran-heavy corps. And unlike the Seahawks, the Giants haven't been running the same scheme for more than five years with an extra 12 games of wear and tear on their bodies. Seattle has been losing pieces ever since their Super Bowl XLVIII win, while New York has been building. As mentioned before, the Packers aren't on the Giants' schedule this season, but apart from quarterback and offensive line, Big Blue takes the edge in every position group on paper. The Giants should own the Cowboys in terms of mental warfare after handing them two of their three regular-season losses last year. While the Giants have strengthened the passing game, Dallas' defense lost several key players this offseason.(Photos courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Robert Mathis boasts an enviable resume. The pass-rusher spent his entire 14-year career with the Indianapolis Colts, was named to six Pro Bowls, led the league in sacks in 2013, and won a Super Bowl in 2006.But it's that last accomplishment that still eats at Mathis, who believes the Peyton Manning-era Colts should have more than one ring to their name."Looking back on that team, I feel a mix of pride, and, I’ll admit, the slightest bit of disappointment," Mathis wrote in the Players' Tribune on Friday. "I'm so proud of what we accomplished during our era of Colts football, but I think every person, down to the last man, would tell you that he expected to win more than one ring in Indy. If there's any regret I have from my career, it's that."The Colts made another Super Bowl in 2009, losing to the New Orleans Saints in heartbreaking fashion.Mathis' career extended into the Andrew Luck era, and while the Colts appeared on track to contend for another Super Bowl before the sack master's time in the NFL was over, Indy quickly fell apart, missing the playoffs in 2015 and 2016 before Mathis hung up his cleats this offseason. While Mathis is disappointed to have only one ring on his hand, he still has the Colts' win over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI to reminisce about in his retirement."Not to sound arrogant, but after we beat the Patriots in that game, the Super Bowl almost seemed like a formality." Mathis wrote. "The Bears were a great team, but that was our game. They said we couldn’t play in the elements, and all we did was hold the Bears offense to a single touchdown in a huge rainstorm to win that game."After far too long, we finally got Peyton his ring."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. by Jack Browne, Mitch Sanderson on (#2X69P)
Strong Sides is a series in which theScore's NFL editors debate topics from around the league.Despite Trevor Siemian's admirable efforts in his first full season as a starting quarterback, the Denver Broncos are open to change entering the 2017 season.Siemian will face off with former first-round pick Paxton Lynch in what should be the most interesting positional battle of training camp, as the two players boast vastly different skill sets.Who should start at QB for the Broncos?Jack Browne: Siemian was OK in 2016, but that just won't cut it anymore in Denver. The Broncos' defense has been among the league's best for the past three years, but regression is inevitable. The loss of one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, Wade Phillips, as well as DeMarcus Ware, might be too much for Denver to overcome and still be an elite unit. It needs more from its offense to ease the pressure on the defense, and Siemian will never be that guy. While Lynch is more of a boom-or-bust guy, this offense needs a spark. Time to step up, young gun. Long gone are the days when fresh-faced pivots can sit on the bench for more than a year.Mitch Sanderson: Siemian went from unknown seventh-round pick to Pro Bowl invitee in one season, and suddenly everyone is doubting that he can grow. The 25-year-old has started 12 more games than his competitor, and boasts a winning record and the experience of winning a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning. He can play a conservative style if the Broncos' defense is controlling the game, or push the ball downfield to one of his Pro Bowl receivers. Lynch is going to need time to adjust to the speed of the NFL, while Siemian is ready to evolve after being welcomed to the league a year ago.Browne: Writing off Siemian at this stage of his career would be ridiculous, but can he actually push the ball downfield, as you suggested? He attempted just 39 passes of 21 yards or more last season, completing 30.8 percent of them, according to Joe Mahoney of Mile High Report. And that's with two great receivers who are skilled in the vertical game. Lynch was worse in 2016, but in a tiny sample size, and his college tape shows he's more than capable of being an upper-echelon deep passer thanks to his solid arm. There will be growing pains, for sure, but Lynch is going to earn the job sooner or later, so why not make it sooner and kick-start his development?Sanderson: The Broncos finished one game from a playoff spot last season without starting running back C.J. Anderson in the lineup. This isn't the time to take steps backward for the sake of possibly moving forward. The missed playoff appearance was a blip on the radar in Denver. With a rejuvenated backfield, skilled set of receivers, and still-elite defense, now isn't the time to reinvent the offense. Lynch showed no signs of game-altering accuracy or arm strength in his rookie debut, and using his college experience against AAC competition isn't a strong indicator of what he can do against pro defenses.Browne: But let's not pretend Siemian is even Alex Smith lite. The third-year pro's subpar accuracy and consistency means we can't even slap him with the "game manager" label. And this is more about the Broncos' competition than the Broncos themselves. The AFC West is arguably the strongest division in the NFL, with the Chiefs and Raiders unlikely to drop off and the Chargers likely a playoff team in any other division. Standing pat isn't good enough, and relying on Anderson to be the offense's centerpiece hasn't worked out well in the past. Lynch's rookie season was a disappointment, yes, but he was always going to be a raw prospect. Plus, new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy runs an aggressive scheme that suits his talents far more than Siemian's.Sanderson: Again, you're assuming Siemian can only be what he was last season. After playing just one snap in his first season, he averaged more yards per game than any rookie in 2016, and only Dak Prescott topped his touchdown production. For a first-year starter, that's pretty good - good enough to earn a Pro Bowl invitation, anyway. Siemian started only one year in Rick Dennison's conservative offense, so, for all we know, he may be better in a more aggressive system. Lynch's appeal is understandable, as he presents the mystery of the unknown. While what we know about Siemian may seem boring on the outside, the Northwestern product has faced doubts his whole career, and surpassed expectations at each turn.(Photos courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Arizona Cardinals' two most vital veterans will get the night off when the team opens the preseason with the annual Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3.Neither Carson Palmer nor Larry Fitzgerald will play in the game against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Bruce Arians announced Saturday.Palmer will turn 38 before the season's end, while Fitzgerald will turn 33 next month. It's typical for starters to play only a series or two in the Hall of Fame Game, which occurs very early in training camp, so the Cardinals' decision to rest a few older players is hardly radical. It's also possible other veterans, such as linebacker Karlos Dansby, will sit out the game, Arians suggested.Arians did promise that the Cardinals' starters will get more reps than usual in the preseason, so it's possible Palmer and Fitzgerald will play more than a series or two in the team's second preseason game.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Florida senator Marco Rubio, a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, has an idea on how to get Tom Brady out of the NFL ahead of the coming season. While addressing New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, who was nominated as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, during his confirmation hearing Thursday, Rubio jokingly suggested they find a similar job for the New England Patriots quarterback."I think you and I agree the country would be well served if a certain Thomas Brady of Massachusetts were nominated ambassador to Brazil," Rubio said. "Perhaps that could be arranged before September of this year."Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, is from Brazil.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
