It's Hockey Night in Las Vegas: Name, logo to be unveiled
The wait is almost over, as the long-anticipated name of the NHL's newest franchise will be unveiled Tuesday night.Las Vegas will reveal its nickname, jersey, and logo at Toshiba Plaza, in front of its new home, T-Mobile Arena at 8:30 p.m. ET.Several key figures will be on hand, including franchise owner Bill Foley, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, and Las Vegas GM George McPhee.Foley previously confirmed the team will be named either the Desert Knights, Golden Knights, or Silver Knights.
O Canada: Scheifele emerging as NHL superstar
Every Tuesday, theScore's editors will examine the fortunes of the north's seven NHL franchises. Welcome to "O Canada."Calgary FlamesPlus: Backup goaltender Chad Johnson, who appeared in four straight games and grabbed a trio of wins in the process. The journeyman netminder has been a revelation in Calgary, already with a 9-5-3 record on the season.Minus: Conversely, the Flames' intended starter, Brian Elliott, is still finding his way in Cowtown and fighting to find consistency. Elliott had the league's top save percentage last season at .930, but that's dipped to .882 this year. The Take: The Flames have a burning desire to figure out their goaltending, and making wins more difficult to come by will be the absence of leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau, who is out six weeks with a broken finger. The Flames have struggled mightily under new coach Glen Gulutzan, with just eight wins in 21 outings.Edmonton OilersPlus: Hats off to Connor McDavid, who, after 10 games without a tally, silenced his critics with his first career hat trick in a 5-2 beating of the Dallas Stars. McDavid leads the NHL scoring race with 24 points in 20 games.Minus: The Oilers surprised many in 2014 when they signed winger Benoit Pouliot to a five-year, $20-million contract. Eleven games without a point recently earned Pouliot back-to-back scratches by coach Todd McLellan. The Take: After dropping five in a row, the Oilers enjoyed a nice bounce back with a win over the Stars and a 5-0 shellacking of the Chicago Blackhawks. Aside from McDavid, the Oilers' key contributors - namely Leon Draisaitl, Jordan Eberle, Milan Lucic, and goalie Cam Talbot - are delivering as the team sits first in the Pacific with 23 points.Montreal CanadiensPlus: Following a full-time shift to center, Alex Galchenyuk is finally realizing his potential. The third overall pick in 2012 is scoring at a point-per-game pace, with 19 points on the season.Minus: How valuable is Alexander Radulov? The Russian winger missed two games, and without him in the lineup, the Canadiens dropped back-to-back games to the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Take: With 30 points in 19 games, the Canadiens leave little room for criticism as the NHL's top team. One curiosity is the usage of Sven Andrighetto, who's already been demoted to St. John's (AHL) twice. Andrighetto has delivered in the AHL - grabbing Player of the Week honors in October - but has zero points in four games with the Habs this year.Ottawa SenatorsPlus: Ever heard of Ryan Dzingel? Didn't think so. A seventh-round pick from 2011, Dzingel has surprised as the Sens' third-leading scorer, with 10 points in 18 games.Minus: The negative spotlight shines on goaltender Andrew Hammond who, after missing significant time due to a groin injury, refused an AHL conditioning stint. The Senators subsequently waived him and assigned him to the minors. The Take: The Senators continue to fly under the radar, with a 10-7-1 showing through 18 games. But despite their winning record, Ottawa sits just shy of a playoff position. For a team already short on offense, the Senators will have their work cut out for them as they deal with a pair of minor injuries to two of their top forwards, Bobby Ryan and Mike Hoffman.Toronto Maple LeafsPlus: It's easy to look at Toronto and talk about the young guns, but veteran winger James van Riemsdyk also deserves some love. With 17 points in 18 games, the lanky forward is on pace for a career year.Minus: Sorry, Auston Matthews. After teasing us with a four-goal debut, the scrutiny will only increase as his goal drought continues. Matthews has six goals on the year but has not tallied in nearly a month, last scoring Oct. 25.The Take: The Maple Leafs have made positive steps in the early stages of their rebuilding, and hold down a winning record of 8-7-3 through 18 games. The challenge will be how the team's young talent responds through the difficult middle portion of the season. Rookie Mitch Marner sits second in NHL freshman scoring with 16 points.Vancouver CanucksPlus: Don't get down on the Sedins. The twins can still play, and have combined for 25 points on the season. Both players are closing in on career milestones, with Daniel 45 points away from 1,000 and Henrik only 18 off.Minus: After a strong start to the season, the play of goalie Ryan Miller has dropped off, with his save percentage under .900 and his goals-against average approaching three-plus.The Take: After a slow start to November, the Canucks have grabbed points in three of their last four, including two overtime wins over the Stars and the Arizona Coyotes. General manager Jim Benning wants to add a 20-goal man, and that notion has linked the team to Buffalo Sabres winger and Vancouver native Evander Kane.Winnipeg JetsPlus: Mark Scheifele's name doesn't normally come up when discussing the league's best pivots, but he's making a name for himself this year with 23 points on the season already. Scheifele has arrived.Minus: Defenseman Jacob Trouba is back in the lineup after a failed trade demand and appears to be taking his time to find the scoresheet, with no points through six games. The Take: Coach Paul Maurice is juggling a host of young talent this season - not only Scheifele, but Nikolaj Ehlers, Kyle Connor, and the NHL's leading rookie scorer, Patrik Laine, among others. That's led to a bevy of highlight-reel plays, but also some predictable growing pains, like the Jets' embarrassing 12-shot showing versus the Boston Bruins.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Oops-a-daisy: Devils' Quincey scores nifty own goal
Kyle Quincey sure loves putting the puck in the net. So much so, that he'll even direct one into his own goal if he has to.The New Jersey Devils defenseman mistakenly did so after falling to the ice and desperately trying to clear a puck away from the front of his own net. However, in doing so, he aided in Brent Burns' seventh goal of the season. It's an unfortunate stroke of luck for Quincey, who entered the game having scored two goals - in the opposition's net - over his last four games.(Video courtesy: NHL.com)Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Benn roofs OT winner after serious hustle from Seguin
Ryan Ellis pays for 'extremely dirty' hit on J.T. Brown
As compromised positions shift.Ryan Ellis victimized J.T. Brown with hard, highly illegal blindside contact late in Monday's game in Nashville. But when he sprung off the contact and crashed awkwardly into the boards, a vengeful Brown happened to land on top, and delivered a series of unanswered blows from the top as retribution.Brown wasn't the only Lightning forward that was hot. Afterward, Brian Boyle called Ellis' hit "extremely dirty," according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, adding, "that shouldn't happen."Nashville ended up winning 3-1 on P.K. Subban's first multi-goal game with the Predators.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Oilers' Russell lays crushing hit on Motte
Klefbom's scoring surge a welcome sight for Oilers
Klefboms in bunches.Edmonton Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom scored with a blast from inside the circle in the first period Monday night versus the Chicago Blackhawks, in the process extending his goal scoring streak to three games.A couple of shifts later, Klefbom wheeled into a shooting lane on the power play and snapped a shot that took a touch off Leon Draisaitl to cash his second point of the night.Klefbom's recent offensive wave comes after a frustrating start for the 23-year-old defender, who the Oilers were counting on to anchor their specialty teams in the absence of a prototypical power-play specialist. He remains without the puck-moving capability and creativity from the top of the umbrella that the Oilers need to maximize the amount of talent they can throw out in mismatched scenarios. Because a team with Connor McDavid, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Draisaitl simply should not own a below-average scoring rate on the man advantage. But, with a power shot and precision, Klefbom has shown in recent games that he may have the ability to be a solid No. 2 option in that role.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Duchene salvages Avalanche win with OT redirection

Tortorella to Trotz: Quit whining about high-stick call
John Tortorella has a brief but important message for Barry Trotz."Quit whining, that's all I have to say," the Blue Jackets head coach said Monday, according to Tom Reed of the Columbus Post-Dispatch.Tortorella was responding to Trotz's comments Sunday about a high-sticking call on Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom that was drawn by some apparent embellishment on the part of Nick Foligno.Trotz said he hoped the NHL looked at the incident, calling it "just a little bit disrespectful to the game."As of late Monday afternoon, Foligno had not heard from the league, and was somewhat taken aback by Trotz's words."I think I was most offended by his remarks only because anyone who knows me and knows the way I play, that's probably the furthest thing from my mind there," Foligno maintained."(Backstrom's stick) came very close to hitting me in my face," he added. "You can slow anything down and make it look how you want. If you watch it at full speed, I only throw my head back. I don't grab for my face. I do that strictly because it was so close to my face. It's a natural reaction I think anyone would have when a stick comes that close to their face."The divisional foes will meet next on Jan. 5 in Washington.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Noise: Werenski anchors surging Jackets, Hurricanes weathering storm
theScore's new series, "The Noise," is published every Monday. It kicks off each week with a quick look at three teams or players making headlines, good or bad.Zach WerenskiAuston Matthews and Patrik Laine are getting all of the attention among rookies, but a certain Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman deserves more credit than he's getting early on.Zach Werenski picked up his ninth assist Sunday in a win over the Washington Capitals, helping them improve to 10-4-2, and 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. The Blue Jackets have won four straight contests thanks in large part to Werenski's play on the blue line. The 19-year-old has two goals and an assist in that span and leads all Columbus defensemen with 14 points in his first 16 NHL games.Only Seth Jones is logging more ice time than Werenski for the Blue Jackets. The latter blue-liner is tied for third among rookies in points, and only Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander has more among rookies on the power play.New York IslandersWe knew the Islanders would have trouble compensating for the loss of Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen, but we didn't think it would be this bad.Andrew Ladd has three points in 17 games, and his struggles have been indicative of the larger picture for New York. The Islanders have difficulties scoring and defending, ranking 21st in goals for per game and 24th in average goals allowed. They also have the third-worst power play in the league and the ninth-worst penalty kill. That's just not going to get it done, and won't get much easier with Travis Hamonic expected to miss another month with his injury.Carolina HurricanesCan winning silence relocation rumors? It seems like nothing will when it comes to the Carolina Hurricanes, but they've been doing their part to quell the latest scuttlebutt about their future. The Hurricanes finished off a five-game homestand with four consecutive wins, including statement victories over the Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks, and Montreal Canadiens. They still have work to do if they want to be a playoff team, but there have been some encouraging signs that point to future gains.Related: Why Bill Peters might be right about the Hurricanes' playoff chancesCam Ward has allowed only four goals during the four-game win streak, shutting out the Sharks and limiting the Capitals to a single goal in a 5-1 victory. Through 20 games this season, Carter has recorded nine goals and eight assists.Ward appeared in three games, posting a perfect record, alongside a 1.01 goals-against average and a spectacular .964 save percentage. The Carolina Hurricanes netminder improved his record to 6-4-3 on the season with wins over the San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens, and Winnipeg Jets.Backstrom was a key cog for the Washington Capitals, posting eight points in four games, including four goals. The feat included a five-point outing in a 7-1 drubbing of the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Backstrom has recorded 17 points in 18 games, while the Capitals sit at 11-5-2 through 18 games.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Why Bill Peters might be right about the Hurricanes' playoff chances
The forecast is starting to look a little better for the Carolina Hurricanes.Following a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday, head coach Bill Peters - who's guided the team to an early 7-6-4 record - sees reason for optimism about Carolina's chances moving forward.
Suddenly surging: Are the Blue Jackets for real?
Out with the morning skate, in with success. The Columbus Blue Jackets are one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now, riding a four-game win streak with an 8-1-1 record in their last 10 contests. No one expected much of John Tortorella's troops this season, but Columbus has beaten the Capitals twice during the impressive stretch of play, along with defeating the Rangers, Blues, Stars, Canadiens, and DucksCurrently holding onto the top wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference - just two points behind Washington in the Metropolitan - one can't help but wonder, are the Blue Jackets for real?Let's take a look:Under-the-radar offenseProduction across the board has paid major dividends for Columbus 16 games into its season.Captain Nick Foligno rediscovered his nose for the net and has a team-leading 18 points, while the quietly ultra-productive Alexander Wennberg has notched 14 assists along with three goals.Cam Atkinson, Brandon Saad, Sam Gagner, and Scott Hartnell have all reached double digits in points, and the Blue Jackets rank eighth league-wide in goals with 54.Before you invest in playoff tickets, though, a 10 percent shooting clip - the second-highest mark in the NHL - might not be sustainable, because Columbus is generating a league-worst 26.5 shots per game.Bob is backIf the Blue Jackets' offense does flatten out for a while, at least they can rely on Sergei Bobrovsky again.Building off a strong showing for Russia at the World Cup, Bobrovsky seems to have found his Vezina-winning form after losing it a season ago.The 28-year-old is 10-4-1. Among goalies with at least 10 starts, Bobrovsky ranks eighth in goals-against average (2.19) and is tied for fourth in save percentage (.931).Bobrovsky has given the Blue Jackets a chance with each start - which is important, since they've allowed a concerning 31.5 shots per game. The X-FactorWhile Jarmo Kekalainen has received his fair share of criticism during his tenure as general manager, he struck gold when he drafted Zach Werenski eighth overall in 2015.Werenski has 14 points in 16 games, and ranks second among all defensemen in that category, tied with the likes of Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Duncan Keith. Not bad for a 19-year-old.The Michigan product is averaging 22 minutes per game, an impressive feat for a rookie. Looking ahead, Weresnki and the injured Seth Jones give the Blue Jackets the ingredients for a potentially dominant top pairing on their blue line.VerdictMaintaining their current pace will be difficult, as the numbers beyond wins and losses aren't in the Blue Jackets' favor.Columbus owns the league's third-highest PDO (the total of a team's shooting and save percentage) at 103.62, a number that typically trends closer to 100 for every team as the season progresses.Additionally, the Blue Jackets' even-strength Corsi For rating of 46.89 ranks 27th in the NHL.An explosive offense, strong goaltending, and an encouraging glimpse of the future offer plenty of promise in Columbus, but it's likely premature to buy into the Blue Jackets' early success.(Advanced statistics courtesy: Corsica Hockey)Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Trotz: High-sticking call on Backstrom was 'disrespectful to the game'
The Washington Capitals were not pleased with a third-period penalty call on Nicklas Backstrom that led to a game-winning goal for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.More specifically, it was Barry Trotz who had some choice words for what appeared to be some serious embellishment on the part of Nick Foligno."I hope the league looks at that," Trotz said, per Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Post-Dispatch. "You see the replay. He doesn't really touch him. (Foligno's) head pops up when Backy's stick is already on the way down. That's just a little bit disrespectful to the game. The league will look at that. We have fines for that. If that's something that they took advantage of, I wouldn't be too happy if I was the referee."Here's a look at the play in question:

Better late than never for the Columbus Blue Jackets. With less than a minute remaining in Sunday's match versus the divisional opponent Washington Capitals, the Blue Jackets executed a nifty tic-tac-toe passing play to grab the lead, and the eventual game winner. On the powerplay, the play began when winger Sam Gagner fed a point shot to captain Nick Foligno on the left side. Foligno then slid a cross-crease pass to Alexander Wennberg, who buried it into an open net behind Capitals netminder Braden Holtby. The goal marked Wennberg's third of the season, and his 17th point in 16 games. As for the Blue Jackets, their record improved to 10-4-2, while the Capitals fell to 11-5-2.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Coyotes return Strome to junior
The Arizona Coyotes have returned forward Dylan Strome to the Erie Otters of the OHL, the club announced Sunday.Strome has appeared in seven games with the Coyotes this season, recording one point and averaging 13:41 in ice-time. The 19-year-old scored 111 points in 56 games with Erie last season."Dylan has made exceptional progress and continues to make strides to being an elite center in this league," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said in a statement. "At this point in time we felt it was best for his development to get him back playing in junior, but his future in the NHL is very bright."The possibility exists that Strome could join Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championship. Healthy Vanek insists he won't be Red Wings' savior after 11-game absence
Thomas Vanek will be back in the lineup Sunday night, but he's trying to keep expectations in check. The Detroit Red Wings forward cautioned against assuming he'll be able to single-handedly reverse the team's fortunes when he plays against the Calgary Flames after missing the last 11 games."I'm not here to save anything," Vanek told Dana Wakiji of the Red Wings' official website."Before when I first got here I felt like I could still play in this league and make my teammates better. That's what good players can do and I feel like I'm still a good player. I'm not here to go out there and score three goals and try to be some kind of hero. Whoever I play with tonight, I'll try to make those two better. And If they make me better, hopefully we have success as a line."Vanek set the bar high with four goals and four assists in seven games for his new club before suffering a hip injury. The Red Wings went 3-7-1, scoring only 18 goals and being shut out three times in his absence.Vanek is tied for second on the team in goals and points despite missing more than half of Detroit's first 18 games.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Boudreau calls out team after loss to Avalanche
Bruce Boudreau isn't wild about his offense.Following Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the frustrated Minnesota Wild bench boss told reporters, "I need more from a lot of guys. When was the last time any of us had a multi-point game? You can't win in this league every night 1-0, 2-1."Through eight games in November, the Wild have scored more than two goals just once. That's a stark contrast from the first month of the season, in which the Wild scored two-plus in eight of nine contests, averaging 3.56 goals per game. The Wild have dealt with their share of injuries - particularly star forward Zach Parise, who missed six games with a lower-body injury - but it's no excuse for the team's overall offensive game.As it stands, Eric Staal and Charlie Coyle are the team's only forwards with five goals and double-digit points."You got to be able to forecheck and you got to be able to fight to get inside. There's loose pucks there, if you want to score, you got to get it," added Boudreau, who is now focused on preparing his team for Monday's match versus the Dallas Stars."There are too many games in this league to sit and get pissed off about a game for two days because by the time you start worrying about Dallas, that's going to be behind you."Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Maurice takes responsibility for Jets' poor showing vs. Bruins
Paul Maurice knew who to blame following Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins."I got two jobs. One is to prepare my hockey team and the other is to run the bench, and that team wasn't prepared to play. That's on me," the Winnipeg Jets coach told reporters. "I'm not looking at that room. I'm looking at what I did to get this hockey club ready because it wasn't good enough for this league."I'm not in there reading them the riot act. I got to get my act here together because we weren't ready to play."The Jets were largely outplayed for much of the game, finishing the night with just 12 shots on goal. Winnipeg goalie Michael Hutchinson faced 38 shots in the loss.Related: Jets can't muster an even-strength shot in 2nd period vs. Bruins"There isn't a piece of that game that we were good at," Maurice said. "If we have to sit here today and get a silver lining, if you're going to be bad, you might as well be bad in all parts of your game, so then you have the hope that you can write that one off."The Jets will have a quick shot at redemption on Sunday when they travel to Raleigh to take on the Carolina Hurricanes.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. NHL world sends well wishes to Craig Cunningham
An outpouring of support has surfaced on social media and beyond for Craig Cunningham, the journeyman forward and Tucson Roadrunners captain who collapsed before Saturday's game versus the Manitoba Moose.Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka offered his thoughts and prayers to Cunningham and the player's family in a statement released by the NHL club Saturday night. There were messages from teammates:
Sidney Crosby still good for a goal per game
The Pittsburgh Penguins were flat in the second half of a back-to-back in their shootout loss Saturday versus the Buffalo Sabres, but there was no dip in the production of captain Sidney Crosby.Zipping a pass from Chris Kunitz into the back of the net on a power play in the third period, Crosby kept his 82-goal scoring pace and matched Patrik Laine for the league lead with 12 goals.Though he'd have to settle for a career-high 76 tallies should he maintain this scoring surge due to missing the first six games of the season, his league-best 1.33 points per game has him on track to surpass the 100-point threshold for the first time in three seasons.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc.
