Letang, Kessel rock 'Phil for President' shirts
"Make America Phil Again."That's what Kris Letang appears to have in mind on the eve of the U.S. election, as the Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman posted a shot of himself and Phil Kessel himself wearing "Phil for President" shirts.
Burke OK with Kadri hit, more concerned about physicality leaving game
It's a dearth in physicality that troubles Brian Burke, not Nazem Kadri's hit on Daniel Sedin that's sparked conversation regarding blindside contact around the hockey world.Calgary Flames president Brian Burke, who drafted both Kadri and Sedin in his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, weighed in on the punishing hit that went unpunished by the NHL's Department of Player Safety."It was fine," Burke told TSN's Gino Reda. "We're already taking hitting and fighting out of the game at a scary pace."Players should be aware or the their surroundings. Blindside head shots (have to) go. Not all blindside hits."Burke has traditionally been one of the stronger proponents of the physical aspects ostensibly bleeding from the game. Last season marked the fewest amount of fights in nearly a half century with 0.28 scraps per contest, as tabulated by HockeyFights.com, and that trend has continued this year with more and more teams employing skillful prospects in lieu of heavy-handed veterans.Matthew Tkachuk, Burke's latest first-round draft selection, was assessed just the team's third major penalty this season in a fight Sunday night with Joseph Cramarossa of the Anaheim Ducks.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Matthews passes buck to Bon Jovi-loving Marner
Auston Matthews was left no choice; he was coerced into belting Bon Jovi with Mitch Marner.Matthews had a laugh with reporters Monday when asked about the video of himself and Marner singing Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" during a break in Saturday's misconduct-heavy showdown with the Vancouver Canucks."He was just screaming it in my ear," he said, according to TSN's Kristen Shilton. "So I started singing along with him. He's a big fan of that song, he plays it in the car sometimes."He's definitely a big Bon Jovi guy."Matthews added that they've been taking some abuse from teammates for the harmonization that went viral."We're living our dream right now," he told TSN's Mark Masters. "Probably the most important thing is to go out there and have fun."Marner, meanwhile, didn't deny his role in the incident."Yeah, if I know the song I'm usually singing it," Marner said. "Depends on the moment."Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Kadri pleased with NHL ruling: 'I hit (Sedin) in the shoulder'
Nazem Kadri is glad to have evaded the long arm of the NHL's law.The Toronto Maple Leafs center avoided a hearing after popping Daniel Sedin with a dangerous-looking blindside hit Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. In the end, the hit was deemed to be unworthy of suspension, confirming Kadri's belief that Sedin's shoulder was the principal point of contact."I did hit him in the body and that was the main point of contact, and I'm glad the league felt the same way," Kadri said, per Mark Masters of TSN. "It happens pretty fast. It's a reacting-type play. I just tried to stay low with it and I did feel I hit him in the shoulder."(The hit was) just instinct. I saw him and tried to finish my check," Kadri added. "What worried me most was him hitting his head off the ice."Kadri has three goals in his past three games - all Toronto wins - and is on pace for his most offensively productive season.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kucherov, Crawford, Hayes named NHL's 3 stars
As is tradition Monday mid-day, the NHL's released its three stars for the week that was.Nikita Kucherov earned first-star status, scoring three goals and sharing the league lead with seven points. He helped his Tampa Bay Lightning bag two wins and an additional point in a shootout loss to the Boston Bruins. He vaulted to third in league scoring, upping his season total to 15 points.Corey Crawford had another brilliant week in the Chicago Blackhawks' cage. The goaltender won all three of his starts, highlighted by a 38-save shutout of the Colorado Avalanche to earn the NHL's second star. He's allowed seven goals in his last six starts, helping the Blackhawks to 11 points over that stretch.Kevin Hayes has been the hottest of the New York Rangers scorers. He notched four goals and two assists last week, leading an offense that produced 20 goals in four games over the last seven days. The NHL's third star is already up to a third of his total production from last season with 12 points.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Eriksson, Ladd face off as early free-agent busts
Money well spent? On July 1, the Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders committed a combined $68.5 million over the next seven years to secure the services of two wingers in Loui Eriksson and Andrew Ladd.As the two teams get set to meet Monday at Barclays Center, the results so far have been underwhelming, to say the least. Here's a look at how the two players are faring with their new teams.Lowly LaddWe've seen stranger things, but something definitely seems upside down in Brooklyn.
The Noise: Sidney simply spectacular, Andersen in rhythm
theScore's new series "The Noise" will be published every Monday, and kick off each week with a quick look at teams or players making headlines, good or bad. What more can be said about the New York Rangers? With five goals in all four games played this past week, the Blueshirts have now won eight of nine, and opened up a goal differential that's 15 points better than the next closest Eastern Conference team. The Blackhawks and Capitals have been similarly dominant of late, winning six and five games in a row, respectively. But for the sake of variety, we'll highlight three other teams making headlines, though in the absence of unwavering authority.Pittsburgh PenguinsSo Sidney Crosby's made a world of difference, huh?In his six games since being cleared from his preseason concussion, Crosby's scored eight goals, matching Artem Anisimov and Patrik Laine for the NHL lead - only those two hit eight in more than double the amount of games. His scoring touch through six is so ridiculous (and incredibly unsustainable) that if he keeps this pace (he can't), he would hit a triple-digit goal total and obliterate Wayne Gretzky's single-season record despite sitting out the first six games. This dominance is thanks, in part, to this club being able to reinvent itself again. Carl Hagelin, who helped ignite Phil Kessel last season, is having a similarly incendiary effect on the top line with Crosby and Patric Hornqvist.Pittsburgh's secured 11 of a possible 12 points since Crosby's return, its most recent win being a 5-0 drubbing of the San Jose Sharks in Saturday's Stanley Cup Final rematch.Toronto Maple LeafsThe Maple Leafs offered a few take-home messages this week.First, Frederik Andersen's found his zen - that, or streamable television service. The netminder that was the reason the Maple Leafs were losing throughout the first two weeks, dug in and keyed three straight wins this week. He made 109 stops on 115 shots, including 42 in his best performance with the Maple Leafs in a win versus the Buffalo Sabres. We also learned Nazem Kadri can be a good, if not a dominant shutdown center, when stimulated. Rising to the challenge matching with the game's most dominant player, an incentivized Kadri made Connor McDavid's first visit to his hometown a miserable one. He was rewarded for the exasperation he caused, scoring two goals including the overtime winner. And third, a win over Vancouver isn't enough to suggest this team can vie for a postseason spot. But as they picked up the smell of blood in that 6-3 win Saturday, they became a different team, looking confident, resolute, unified.Columbus Blue JacketsThere's still reason to dismiss the Blue Jackets. Without their 10-0 demolition of the Canadiens, this team has simply traded goals with the opposition through the first month. And for that reason, they project to remain outside the playoff bracket. But with their partially inflated plus-11 goal differential, which by the way only the Rangers can top in the East, as well as some problematic underlying data, there's reason to be excited about the Jackets.Columbus hasn't just survived their brutal 10-game schedule to start, but has quietly racked up the points against heavyweight opponents. Check this out: Against the Blackhawks, Stars (twice), Kings, Sharks, Ducks, Canadiens, and Blues in their last eight games, the Blue Jackets have racked up 12 points and lost only once in regulation. They own a top-10 points percentage league-wide, and are only middling in the standings because they've played fewer games than any other team.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Rangers, who lead the NHL with 55 goals and 4.23 per game, have scored at least five in each game of their winning streak.Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele scored for Winnipeg, which has lost four of its last five (1-3-1). Connor Hellebuyck started and gave up four goals on 16 shots before he was replaced late in the second period by Michael Hutchinson, who finished with one save. After a scoreless first half of the second period in which Winnipeg had a 4-1 advantage on shots, the Rangers outscored the Jets 4-1 over the final 10 minutes.Zuccarello took a pass from Chris Kreider and fired a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past Hellebuyck for his sixth to put the Rangers up 2-1 just past the midpoint of the period.Scheifele tied it two minutes later as he pounced on a puck sitting in front of an open net after a shot by Paul Postma was stopped by Lundqvist. It was Scheifele's seventh of the season.Miller skated up along the right side and fired a wrist shot over Hellebuyck's right shoulder for his fifth, putting the Rangers up 3-2 with 6:59 remaining.Fast gave New York a two-goal lead with 3:36 left as he tipped a point shot by Klein from the right faceoff circle for his second goal. That chased Hellebuyck and brought on Hutchinson.Buchnevich made it 5-2 just 41 seconds later as he skated in from the right side, slid the puck from his backhand across to the left side as he crossed in front of Hutchinson and fired it over the sprawled goalie. It was Buchnevich's second of the season and second in two games. The Jets controlled play in the scoreless third period, outshooting the Rangers 9-1, but couldn't get anything past Lundqvist.Hayes got the Rangers off to a fast start with his sixth of the season 2:12 into the game. Skating with an extra attacker on a delayed penalty, Klein sent a pass across to Hayes at the right point, and Hayes fired a slap shot from inside the blue line past Hellebuyck. That gave Hayes a goal in four straight games.Laine tied it with 9:15 left in the first, tipping a point shot by Ben Chiarot for the 18-year-old rookie's eighth of the season. It came on Winnipeg's fifth shot of the game.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

After the draw, the 19-year-old center skated toward the net before finding a spot on the bottom of the right circle. Report: No suspension for Canucks' Miller following 2 misconducts
Vancouver Canucks goalie Ryan Miller won't face supplementary discipline following a pair of misconducts in Saturday's affair against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Postmedia's Ben Kuzma reports.Miller was ejected at the 14:52 mark of the third period after leaving his crease to fight Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin. Miller was whistled as the third man in, because Canucks defenseman Troy Stetcher was already engaged in the scrum. The Canucks netminder was assessed a penalty for leaving his crease, as well as a pair of misconducts, totaling 22 minutes in penalties.According to Kuzma, the NHL has rescinded one of the misconducts. Had both remained in place, Rule 403b states that two misconducts in one game is grounds for a two-game suspension, at minimum.Backup Jacob Markstrom filled in for the game's remaining 5:08, but did not face any shots. "However, we must accept it and put it behind us so we can focus on tomorrow's game."The NHL didn't release an official statement to explain its rationale, but Damian Echevarrieta, a Department of Player Safety staffer, did touch on the subject on Twitter. He underscored that blindside hits are not illegal in the NHL, and that the angle taken is irrelevant as long as the head is not the main point of contact.Vancouver will have a chance to exact its own method of discipline early next month when the Maple Leafs visit the Canucks.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Toronto Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri will reportedly avoid supplementary discipline for his blindside hit on Daniel Sedin on Saturday night, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports. It was without question a malicious hit, and it had quite a violent consequence as Sedin's helmet was jarred loose before his head hit the ice. Artifact that inspired Predators name being relocated to Bridgestone Arena
As the NHL prepares to celebrate its 100th season, the Nashville Predators have been afforded the opportunity to exhibit an essential part of their history. The nine-inch fang and bones of a saber-toothed cat, archaeological findings that helped inspire the Predators' name, will be unveiled at Bridgestone Arena next week after being donated to the organization, reports Jessica Bliss of The Tennessean.
Are the Predators guilty of believing their own hype?
Few imagined the Nashville Predators starting the season this way. With a record of 3-5-3 through 11 games, the Predators have amassed nine points, only one more than the 30th-placed Arizona Coyotes - a team Peter Laviolette's club lost to this past week.Much was expected of a club that added P.K. Subban and Ryan Johansen over the past calendar year, but at least one player believes the Predators may be coasting on the belief that they're good instead of proving it to be true."I think we took it for granted that we knew coming into the season we had a lot of talent," forward Colin Wilson said, according to Adam Vingan of The Tennessean. "Since I've been here, the reason why we always win games is the way that we worked. I think we've just gotten away from that, thinking we're going to win based on talent. It's just not the way it works in this league."For Johansen, who is seen as the first-line center the Predators have long sought, it's not about playing harder, but smarter."It's not like we're going out there and not working," he said. "We're just not working smart enough. Everybody goes out there 98 percent of the time and works, but we're just not doing the right things on the ice that create turnovers and make the work evident."And for those willing to place the blame solely on poor goaltending, that hasn't been the issue as of late.

Going streaking: Blackhawks, Capitals maintain winning ways as NHL's hottest
Ho hum, more wins for a pair of longstanding NHL powerhouses.Following Saturday's busy schedule, the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals are tied for the longest win streaks in the NHL, but we'll forgive you for not noticing. In recent years, both clubs - winners of five in a row - have become synonymous with success to varying degrees, and while one has translated that into championships, regular-season dominance, at the very least, has become an expectation in Chicago and Washington. Here's how both teams put together their current runs.BlackhawksCapitals@ NJ 3-2 (OT)@ VAN 5-2vs. LA 3-0@ CGY 3-1vs. CGY 5-1@ WPG 3-2vs. COL 4-0vs. WPG 4-3 (OT)@ DAL 3-2vs. FLA 4-2The streaks have put the Blackhawks and Capitals in a tie for the third-highest point total in the league (17), four behind the first-place Montreal Canadiens, and behind only the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins, both of whom sit on 18 points. The scary thing is Washington's offense has yet to really start clicking, and the Blackhawks still have the NHL's worst penalty kill, and by a wide margin, meaning both teams have yet to perform at their highest levels. At the end of the day, what matters most to both teams is stringing together wins when it matters most, but rest assured they won't be slowing down anytime soon.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Vancouver Canucks lost again Saturday, making it eight in a row, but they went down fighting against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Eventually, a line brawl saw goaltender Ryan Miller come to the aid of rookie defenseman Troy Stecher, who was being pummeled by enforcer Matt Martin."It's great to see us sticking together," Daniel Sedin - who escaped serious injury on the Kadri hit - said after the game. "The game got out of hand, but we stayed together. We'll get through this."Head coach Willie Desjardins agreed with his star player."We thought it was a high hit on Danny. I like the fact our group stuck up for each other. The room cares," he said. "I have no problems with that. One thing you want is your guys to stick up for each other and Miller did that."Miller put it well when explaining why he stepped up for Stecher, who officially recorded the first fight of his career against Martin."I wasn't going to let Stecher get baptized like that by Martin," he said, according to Canucks beat writer Jeff Paterson. "It was a bit predatory."

Neuvirth got his glove on Markov's slap shot, but not enough of it as the puck trickled in.After VandeVelde and Gostisbehere got two goals in quick succession for the visitors, Pateryn made it 2-2 for Montreal at 9:09 of the first. The young defenseman just threw the puck on net, and a screened Neuvirth saw absolutely nothing until it was already too late.Galchenyuk put the Canadiens ahead late in the second period, scoring at 18:38 on Montreal's third shot of the middle frame. The first-line centre, all alone at the side of Neuvirth's goal, took a cross-ice pass from Radulov through traffic and scored into a gaping net for his fourth goal of the season.Galchenyuk now has six points in his last five games. After Danault made it 4-2, Giroux made things interesting in the third period, scoring on the power play. But Plekanec scored his short-handed goal on the same four-minute minor to Andrew Shaw.Konecny got the Flyers back to within one goal at 16:16, but that's as close as the visitors would come.NOTES: Montreal is 9-0-0 when scoring first this year. ... The Canadiens remain perfect at home this season 7-0-0. ... The Habs are 6-0-0 at home against the Flyers in their last six games. ... Report: Jets have let teams know Burmistrov is available
The Winnipeg Jets are reportedly looking to trade forward Alex Burmistrov.Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday on "Headlines" that "a note was sent around this week that Burmistrov is available."Friedman added that he doesn't think Burmistrov's camp has requested a trade, "but there's an understanding this isn't working for either side right now, so the Jets are looking to see what they can get for him."The 25-year-old has one assist in 11 games. He had seven goals and 14 assists in 81 games last season. The Jets are banged up at forward, with Bryan Little, Mathieu Perreault, and Joel Armia all out.
