Season's greetings, good gerbils. I had a rather nasty RSI-induced event recently. My upper back has been pretty tightened up, and things came to a head a couple days ago when I felt the tip of my thumb going numb. Knowing the possible causes, I freaked out more than a little. One visit to my friendly chiropractor, and I'm now back on track for a good recovery. Keep in mind, folks, when you're dealing with anything involving muscles, tendons, and spine, don't wait too long before ringing up a professional. Anyways, here's today's selection of PC hardware deals. ...Read more...

A couple months ago, I teased an upcoming story about my brand new solar panel adventure. I'm happy to report that the system has now been up and running for almost a week. And dude, it's kind of blowing my mind. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that my full write up is at least a month out. I need more time to collect more data, and sun, before I tell my tale. I can't help but tease a little more, though...

Cinebench: Regardless what you think about the software, you know of it. It's ubiquitous in hardware reviews across the web because, if nothing else, it's extremely easy to automate. The version of Cinebench that you're likely to find in CPU reviews to date is Cinebench R15, released in September 2013. (Yeah, more than five years ago.) It's time for a new version, and Maxon has responded with Cinebench R20. ...Read more...

Devil May Cry 5 and Tom Clancy's The Division 2 are both really close to release, while Apex Legends is still burning up the player-count charts. I haven't played The Division 2 yet, but both of the others are killer games. Nvidia, never one to rest on its laurels, just released GeForce driver version 419.35 which, by no coincidence, is "Game Ready" for all three of the aforementioned titles.

Howdy folks. I've been catching up on the latest episodes The Grand Tour, and I'm having loads of fun. I particularly enjoyed the episode in China, which is funny by itself but also kind of mind-boggling. The country is still a bit of a mystery to most of us Westerners, and it's quite amazing to see how the massive infusions of cash are transformed into massive infrastructure. I'd definitely recommend you watch that one. In the meantime, take a gander at our selection of PC hardware deals. ...Read more...

In recent years, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has developed this bizarre habit of releasing specification updates that are often tremendous steps forward but are obscured by confusing, misleading, or downright terrible naming. Clicking that asterisk reveals the box below. ...Read more...

G'afternoon, folks. My tiny terror HTPC is now alive and well, and I'll be making excellent use of it by chewing through my gigantic backlog of movies and shows. I've gone the extra mile and slapped a Core i5-8600 in it in preparation for a future graphics card upgrade, and jeez, that thing is snappy. The Core i7-6700K in my main box suddenly feels a little inadequate. I must now upgrade. I should not have done this. Anyway, check out our selection of hardware deals....Read more...

In an effort to give consumers a chance to see the value of variable monitor refresh rates in person, AMD developed a new demo called "Oasis." Like many benchmarks, it's set up to run a loop when you hit Play; you can toggle FreeSync on and off throughout the run so you can have a quick and clear visual representation of what FreeSync offers. We got our hands on the demo. It has a nice-looking UI, with intuitive controls. Once it loads (it takes a minute or two), you'll see a full-screen rendering of a woodsy scene that includes some old stone structures. Folks who sift through our SSD deals every week will no doubt be familiar with the Micron 1100. That drive was primarily intended as an HDD replacement for OEMs building low-cost PCs, but it found its way into the channel as a high-value offering for folks who want a bunch of solid-state storage. The price per dollar might continue to improve considering Micron's latest offering, the 1300. ...Read more...

ECC memory support is only one of many reasons that someone building a workstation might base it on a Xeon processor. Good afternoon, gerbils. It seems that all the talk lately in tech is about bendy phones that fold over. The screen technology therein is quite fresh, and there are likely to be some growing pains, but it's not hard to envision a future where your phone, tablet, or even perhaps laptop are all the same device. Last month, AMD promised that "all Radeon software updates [would] support all Ryzen Mobile laptops" by the end of the first quarter of this year. Normally we'd expect that to mean somewhere around March 31, but AMD's jumped ahead of schedule and surprised us with Radeon Software 19.2.3, which offers full support for Ryzen chips with Radeon Vega graphics on both desktop and mobile platforms. That means that you can install the new 19.2.3 driver package on mobile and desktop discrete Radeon chips going back to the Radeon HD 8000 series, as well as ...Read more...

The much anticipated (we guess) GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is now available. It's a fairly straightforward product, but it brings with it a new GPU, the TU116, which is fabricated on TSMC's optimized "12nm" FinFET+ process. That whole chip is enabled in the GTX 1660 Ti, and that lends it 24 streaming multiprocessors containing 1536 shaders, 96 texture units, and 48 render output units (ROPs). The TU116 hooks up to 6GB of GDDR6 memory over a 192-bit bus, just like the GeForce RTX 2060. However, the memory on these cards runs at 12 Gbps instead of the 14 Gbps of the RTX lineup.

Like many in the PC hardware enthusiast community, I dig Noctua coolers. I liked my NH-C14 so much that I used it in four separate builds, and I only replaced it because I simply didn't need that much cooling anymore. However, if you were buying an AMD Ryzen system and wanted to use a Noctua cooler, you'd have to either buy one of the models specifically marked for socket AM4 (eg, the NH-D15 SE-AM4) or contact Noctua for a free upgrade kit. The company announced today that this is no longer the case: AM4 mounting kits are now included with all Noctua CPU coolers.

I don't have to tell this to an audience of gerbils, but rumors of PC gaming's death have been greatly exaggerated for a long time now. Microsoft released Windows 10 build 17763.316 yesterday, and the HoloLens was front and center. It's mentioned in the note atop the release notes page, and Microsoft makes it seem a little urgent that current HoloLens devices get the update forthwith. In a recursive Windows Update update, this Windows update is pushing an update to the Windows Update Client so that Windows Update is more reliable when it henceforth updates Windows on HoloLens. It's not coincidental that the debut of the HoloLens 2 appears to be right around the corner. It's hard to believe it's been more than four years since the first HoloLens demos were shown, and it seems like every year there's an expectation that the second generation of the immersive headset is nigh. The fourth time's the charm, though; it's widely believed that Microsoft is ...Read more...

Barely more than a week after the last Geforce driver release, we're back with another one. GeForce driver version 418.91 is "Game Ready" for Metro Exodus, and it also includes game-specific support for Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) on Battlefield V. It's timely, given that just yesterday I was bemoaning the lack of games that make use of the GeForce RTX cards' special sauce in this very space.

Apex Legends is the latest battle royale game to grace gamers, but judging by the extremely high engagement after just a couple of days, you probably already knew that.
