ECC memory support is only one of many reasons that someone building a workstation might base it on a Xeon processor. The specialized motherboards that they require include other features, such as formal support for hardware virtualization and advanced remote management features. If you've been looking for all of that in cherry flavor instead of blueberry, you might have been struggling. However, ASRock would like you to know that it has just the motherboard for you in the ASRock Rack X470D4U. ...Read more...

Good afternoon, gerbils. It seems that all the talk lately in tech is about bendy phones that fold over. The screen technology therein is quite fresh, and there are likely to be some growing pains, but it's not hard to envision a future where your phone, tablet, or even perhaps laptop are all the same device. For now, though, there are multiple competing designs, and we'll have to see what the market at large thinks is the best one. While you're mulling over that important question, here are sweet hardware deals for you. ...Read more...

Last month, AMD promised that "all Radeon software updates [would] support all Ryzen Mobile laptops" by the end of the first quarter of this year. Normally we'd expect that to mean somewhere around March 31, but AMD's jumped ahead of schedule and surprised us with Radeon Software 19.2.3, which offers full support for Ryzen chips with Radeon Vega graphics on both desktop and mobile platforms. That means that you can install the new 19.2.3 driver package on mobile and desktop discrete Radeon chips going back to the Radeon HD 8000 series, as well as ...Read more...

If you go by sales data, most folks on using PCs are on laptops, yet there's really no standardized laptop battery testing methodology. Sure, we have our own testing style, but it differs from, say, Anandtech's, and their differs from Tom's Hardware's...and so on. Underwriter's Laboratories (UL), the group that purchased Futuremark back in 2014, just announced that PCMark 10 is getting two new benchmarks—one of which is a battery life test.UL says that the PCMark 10 battery life benchmark will be a realistic simulation of practical, day-to-day usage ...Read more...

After weeks of rumors and leaks, the newest member of the Turing family has arrived. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti became available today, promising performance on par with the GTX 1070. And yes, that’s "GTX" not "RTX," because although these little fellas are based on the Turing architecture, they lack some of the high-end, future-looking technologies like ray-tracing and DLSS.The RTX 1660 Ti is available from a laundry list of AIB partners, including (in alphabetical order) Asus, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galax, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac. Prices start at $279 and go up from there depending no features. Want ...Read more...

Howdy, enthusiasts everywhere. Around here (Portugal, for those unaware), it's that time of the year again. Samba rhythms occasionally echo through the air from rehearsal warehouses. Orders of plumes from faraway places make their way over here for the construction of ever-elaborate costumes. It's Carnaval season, and soon enough the town will fill up with silliness, dancing ladies, and drumming men. Before the festivities start, I've collected juicy PC hardware deals for you. ...Read more...

The much anticipated (we guess) GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is now available. It's a fairly straightforward product, but it brings with it a new GPU, the TU116, which is fabricated on TSMC's optimized "12nm" FinFET+ process. That whole chip is enabled in the GTX 1660 Ti, and that lends it 24 streaming multiprocessors containing 1536 shaders, 96 texture units, and 48 render output units (ROPs). The TU116 hooks up to 6GB of GDDR6 memory over a 192-bit bus, just like the GeForce RTX 2060. However, the memory on these cards runs at 12 Gbps instead of the 14 Gbps of the RTX lineup.

Like many in the PC hardware enthusiast community, I dig Noctua coolers. I liked my NH-C14 so much that I used it in four separate builds, and I only replaced it because I simply didn't need that much cooling anymore. However, if you were buying an AMD Ryzen system and wanted to use a Noctua cooler, you'd have to either buy one of the models specifically marked for socket AM4 (eg, the NH-D15 SE-AM4) or contact Noctua for a free upgrade kit. The company announced today that this is no longer the case: AM4 mounting kits are now included with all Noctua CPU coolers.

Microsoft released Windows 10 build 17763.316 yesterday, and the HoloLens was front and center. It's mentioned in the note atop the release notes page, and Microsoft makes it seem a little urgent that current HoloLens devices get the update forthwith. In a recursive Windows Update update, this Windows update is pushing an update to the Windows Update Client so that Windows Update is more reliable when it henceforth updates Windows on HoloLens. It's not coincidental that the debut of the HoloLens 2 appears to be right around the corner. It's hard to believe it's been more than four years since the first HoloLens demos were shown, and it seems like every year there's an expectation that the second generation of the immersive headset is nigh. One of the nifty things about the Intel Xeon W-3175X is that you could feasibly stuff 768GB of RAM into a system built around it.
