Google’s next big Pixel
Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Okay, sure, Google basically spent the last few months spoiling its annual hardware event by repeatedly leaking - and, in some cases, just flat-out announcing - all of its upcoming phones, wearables, headphones, and TV gadgets. But the annual Pixel event is still a big day in the gadget world and also a chance to find out exactly what Google thinks the future looks like.In this episode of The Vergecast, we talk through all the new devices, from the Pixel 9 lineup to the Pixel Buds Pro 2 to the Pixel Watch 3. We also discuss last week's launches, particularly the new TV Streamer. Google is now nearly a decade into this phase of its hardware journey and appears to still be serious about being a big player in gadgets. So, the question is:... Continue reading...
Elon Musk tried to launder Donald Trump’s disastrous climate record —it didn’t work
Illustration by Cath Virginia / The Verge | Photo by Grzegorz Wajda, Getty Images During their glitchy, rambling, two-hour conversation" on X last night, Elon Musk made the case to Donald Trump that climate change was real and maybe electric cars weren't as bad as the former president has been making them out to be on the campaign trail. The result was a feeble attempt by a once-lauded environmentalist to launder the former president's disastrous record on climate change.Musk, who endorsed Trump following the failed assassination attempt and is helping fund a super PAC supporting his election, tried to placate Trump by offering his own support for oil and gas drilling and minimizing the threat posed by climate change. But he also attempted to win over Trump by offering a more MAGA-friendly pitch for his own EVs.A... Continue reading...
Flipboard is going to let you follow fediverse accounts right inside the app
Image: Flipboard Flipboard is making good on a major fediverse promise. Late last year, at the same time it announced it would be switching user accounts to ActivityPub, Flipboard said it planned to let users follow users on federated platforms that used ActivityPub from the Flipboard app. Starting Tuesday, that feature is here, meaning that you can follow people from places like Mastodon, Threads, and Pixelfed right inside Flipboard.Flipboard will feature fediverse profiles in a few different ways in the app. Flipboard's search will show fediverse accounts, for example, while the Explore tab will have editorially curated recommendations, according to a press release. Anker’s slim 65W charger can squeeze in between bulkier power adapters
Struggling to squeeze more adapters onto a power strip? Anker's upcoming 65W charger could be the solution. | Image: Anker Japan Anker has come up with a clever design for a new 65W charger that's thin enough to squeeze between larger power adapters on a power strip, potentially making an over-crowded outlet useable again.Thin chargers aren't a new idea, but they typically feature a set of folding prongs on the flat side of the adapter, allowing them to plug into outlets behind furniture and sit flush against the wall. Anker's approach is to instead position a pair of folding prongs on the end of its new charger, taking advantage of the thin design in a different way. GIF: Onesuite The charger's prongs not only fold flat - they can pivot from side to side, allowing it to also be plugged into wall outlets. Anker recently announced new... Continue reading...
How tosave your online writing from disappearing forever
Image: Hugo Herrera / The Verge While the notion lingers that the internet is forever," it can also feel like it's written on water. If you're an internet-based creative, the company that publishes your writing or exhibits an online gallery of your work can suddenly fold (see: Gawker or Game Informer), migrate content management systems, or simply unpublish older work. In that case, the article you researched for a month, the story you carefully constructed, or the gallery of photos that you painstakingly put together could, in that moment, be forever unavailable. And if you've linked to your work in a blog or social network, that link has now become useless. So what do you do? You can save a PDF of each of your works to a local drive, an online storage service, or to... Continue reading...
Rivian is bringing Apple Music with spatial audio to its CarPlay-less EVs
Photo by Daniel Golson for The Verge Rivian isn't offering phone mirroring features like Apple CarPlay in its electric vehicles, so the company is instead pushing a new software update today that adds built-in Apple Music streaming support, which might scratch customers' connectivity itch.Last month, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said on Decoder that CarPlay can't leverage other parts of the vehicle experience and takes control away from automakers. In this case, control comes in the form of a paid subscription service needed to enjoy some of the features available on Rivian's big Android-based infotainment screen. The new native Apple Music app, which includes support for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, is launching after Rivian introduced its new Connect Plus data subscription... Google Pixel 9 event: how to watch the livestream
Image: Google Google's getting ready to reveal its entirely new Pixel phone lineup on Tuesday, including the already (and probably begrudgingly) confirmed Pixel 9 Pro and a new 9 Pro Fold foldable phone. The company is yet again dealing with a whole lot of leaks that have revealed everything from possibly the full lineup and their specs to new colors like bubblegum pink and fresh AI features that will continue to make you ask what a photo is.We may never know why Google keeps suffering leaks of its portfolio of new products year after year, but there's still plenty to learn at the upcoming Made by Google event. Elon Musk tells Donald Trump ‘we shouldn’t vilify the oil and gas industry’

After long, rambling discussions about immigration, inflation, and foreign policy, Musk and Trump finally came to the subject of energy and climate change - where Musk surprisingly came to defense of the fossil fuel industry.I don't think we should vilify the oil and gas industry and the people that have worked very hard in those industries to provide the... We played Valve’s secret new shooter, Deadlock

A controversial experiment to artificially cool Earth was canceled — what we know about why
Cambridge, MA - January 24: Gated entrance on the campus of Harvard University. | Photo: Getty Images After years of legwork, Harvard researchers canceled plans to test a controversial theory for cooling the planet by sending sunlight-reflecting particles up into the atmosphere. Now, members of an independent advisory committee tasked with addressing ethics and safety concerns are sharing what they learned from the ill-fated project.A policy analysis published in the journal Science on Friday highlights how important it is to talk to people on the ground before launching an experiment, especially one tied to potentially planet-altering consequences. The paper echoes recent calls to get policies in place to protect against any unintended side effects.Until pretty recently, the thought of reflecting sunlight back into space to combat... Waymo’s Chinese-made robotaxis face new headwinds thanks to Biden’s tariffs
Image: Abigail Bassett for The Verge Waymo's plans to expand its robotaxi fleet are facing new roadblocks thanks to the Biden administration's trade policies. The Alphabet-owned company had planned to introduce a new robotaxi manufactured by Zeekr, a subsidiary of China's Geely. The cars are being designed in Sweden (where Geely owns Swedish carmaker Volvo), adapted from Geely's all-electric five-door Zeekr. Waymo is then outfitting the cars with the hardware and software necessary for autonomous driving. The first new vehicles began arriving in the US earlier this year. But the vehicles could be subject to newly restrictive tariffs from the Biden administration, which aims to stymie Chinese EV imports into the US. Apple approves iDOS 3 following emulator rule change
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple recently rejected DOS emulator iDOS 3 from the App Store, but following App Store rule changes that look to have cleared the way for PC emulator apps, iDOS 3 is now available for download, developer Chaoji Li announced. In June, Li said that Apple had rejected iDOS 3 because it violated App Store guideline 4.7. At the time, that rule was what allowed retro game console emulator apps to appear on the store, but Apple was only allowing retro game console emulators under the rule - not PC emulators; UTM SE, another PC emulator app, had also said it was rejected for violating the rule. But in July, Apple reversed course and approved UTM SE, and earlier this month, it added the words PC emulator" to guideline 4.7, which is seemingly... Sony’s last-gen WH-1000XM4 headphones return to an all-time low of $198
Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Even four years on, Sony's WH-1000XM4 remain a stalwart choice among wireless noise-canceling headphones - especially now that they've returned to their lowest price of about $198 ($150 off) at Amazon, B&H Photo, and Best Buy. That's thanks in large part to their very good sound quality (which may be just a touch bass-y, to be fair), up to 30 hours of battery life, and some mighty fine active noise cancellation. They're also comfy enough to wear for long sessions, and unlike their replacement model, the WH-1000XM5, they fold down for easier travel and commuting. The XM4 were our overall top pick among headphones for years until they were dethroned by their successor, but they're still a great choice in 2024. Good luck with the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter — you’ll need it
The PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter, and everything that plugs into it. | Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge The biggest problem with Sony's PSVR 2 virtual reality headset is the dearth of games. I'd hoped Sony's PC adapter would change that. The chance to play Half-Life: Alyx, the best VR game made yet, seemed like reason enough for existing owners to justify the $60 adapter purchase. But I can't currently recommend Sony's PC adapter. If I had purchased it with my own money, rather than borrowing one from Sony, I'd have asked for a refund long before now. It's a shame, because the $550 PSVR 2 is still a good headset, with image quality that arguably beats the newer $500 Meta Quest 3. Apple’s last-gen iPad has dropped to $224 for a limited time
Two words: headphone jack. | Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Although Apple's tablet lineup has undergone several shakeups over the last several years, we long considered the ninth-gen iPad to be the best budget iPad you could get. That changed when Apple dropped the price of the 10th-gen iPad to a more sensible $349 and discontinued its entry-level model. But the 2021 iPad remains a perfectly good slate, especially now that the base model with 64GB of storage is down to a new low of around $224 ($105 off) at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy.As far as hardware is concerned, the ninth-gen iPad is very much a remnant of Apple's former design language. But their statements on the ruling expressed restraint. That's because the work of restoring competition has just begun, and the judge has yet to decide what that work will include. With a lot of options on the table, Google's competitors are pushing for changes they believe will help their businesses, which might be harder than it sounds. While we're heartened by the decision, a strong remedy is critical," Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman wrote in a blog post after the ruling, referencing the new trial phase that will kick off in September. We've passed a key milestone, but there's still a lot of... This Vision Pro Virtual Boy emulator isn’t fancy, but it gets the job done
The Vision Pro got its first Virtual Boy emulator in an app called VirtualFriend, finally giving me, a person with an irrational love for Nintendo's most short-lived console, a chance to play it in immersive 3D once more. The app is also available for iOS and iPadOS, where it's a virtually identical experience, minus the 3D effect. The first games I played after downloading VirtualFriend were those I owned as a kid: Red Alarm, Wario Land, and Mario's Tennis. I'm pleased to say that apart from some minor audio glitches in Red Alarm, the games run well - it's all just as I remember it. The cheapest Cybertruck is now almost $100,000
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Tesla has stopped selling the $60,990 RWD Cybertruck, the cheapest version of its angular EV truck, Jalopnik writes. At the same time, the company increased the price of the next-in-line AWD Cybertruck by $20,000. Now $99,990, it elevates the EV's price floor by a whopping $39,000.The Cyberbeast - the tri-motor version of the truck with more torque and a higher top speed than the standard all-wheel drive EV - is also costlier, at $119,990 (it was $99,990 before August 6th). The updated prices are especially bleak when you consider Tesla had said in 2019 that the Cybertruck would start at $39,990.On the bright side, the company bumped up delivery times. Tesla estimates it can get AWD Cybertrucks to customers between August and... Continue reading...
The FCC proposes requiring robocallers to disclose when they’re using AI
Illustration by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposed a new set of rules this week that would require robocallers to disclose when they're using artificial intelligence for phone calls and text messages. The proposal builds on the FCC's ban on making AI-generated robocalls without the express prior consent of the person being called. The agency now hopes to require callers to say, while seeking that consent, whether they plan to use AI for future calls and messages, the FCC writes. Similar disclosures would have to be added to any AI-generated phone calls, which the agency says contain an enhanced risk of fraud and other scams."The regulator suggests defining an AI generated call" as any that uses technology to create an artificial...
