Google’s AR projects are reportedly facing even more setbacks
Illustration: The Verge Following reports that Google gave up on its Project Iris AR glasses in June, a new report from Insider suggests that the company's plan to launch a mixed reality headset with Samsung is also facing setbacks. The rumored device, which is apparently called Project Moohan internally, is supposed to offer a mixed reality experience powered by the Android platform. It has reportedly been in the works since at least last year, tracking with the vague announcement Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm made earlier this year about creating a mixed reality platform. But Project Moohan has become a political headache" at Google. Sources tell Insider that the partnership makes it more likely for Samsung to call the shots on product features" and that it... Continue reading...
Two years after Safari, Chrome plans to let you move the address bar to the bottom
Screenshot by Jay Peters / The Verge A test version of Google Chrome on iOS now lets you put the address bar on the bottom of the screen, as spotted by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser. It's a nice change that lets you move the address bar closer to your thumb - though notably, it comes two years after Apple moved the URL bar to the bottom of Safari by default with iOS 15. Screenshot by Jay Peters / The Verge The new Chrome feature was available for me through the version of the app you can get via TestFlight. There are two ways to change the location of the address bar. The easiest is pressing and holding on the bar, which brings up an option to switch its position. You can also change the bar's location from Chrome's settings. (A colleague in the UK... Continue reading...

GuliKit’s Steam Deck dock looks like a Super Nintendo
Images: GuliKit GuliKit, the company whose patented Hall effect joysticks are sweeping the industry with both aftermarket gamepads and drop-in replacements for your Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, is now putting Nintendo and Microsoft on notice in a very different way.I don't know how else to say this: the company's new docking station looks like a Super Nintendo, and its new controller looks like an Xbox Elite. Thankfully, that means they both look great!
Reddit comments weren’t loading for awhile
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge On Wednesday, Reddit was acting up again. Some of us at The Verge ran into some issues browsing the site, including threads with blank comments and some pages with a 504 Gateway Timeout" message. The key issue seemed to be that comments weren't loading when you were browsing Reddit's website when not logged in. In an Incognito Chrome window on desktop, I could see that people posted comments but couldn't actually see what they wrote. At the bottom of the screen, Reddit's website showed messages that said, We had a server error..." I saw this issue when logged out on Reddit's mobile website as well. Nvidia just made $6 billion in pure profit over the AI boom
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Roughly three months after joining Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft among the world's trillion-dollar companies - on the back of the AI boom - Nvidia is now making far more money than it's ever made before. The company raked in $13.5 billion in revenue since May, it revealed in its Q2 2024 earnings, with the unprecedented demand for its generative AI chips blowing past any difficulty it might have had selling desktop and laptop GPUs into a shrinking PC industry. Data center accounted for a record $10.32 billion of that revenue, more than doubling in just one quarter, and Nvidia made $6.188 billion in profit as a result - up 843 percent year over year. And while gaming is more than a billion dollars short of pandemic highs, it was... Continue reading...
How to convert a PDF for your Kindle
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Not that long ago, a friend sent me a preview of a book that she was about to have published and asked me to read it. I was delighted - but unfortunately, the copy she sent was formatted as a PDF. And since I usually read books and other documents using my phone, I knew already that this was a recipe for eyestrain.I spent a frustrating three days squinting at my screen until somebody reminded me that you can email a PDF to your Amazon account in a way that will convert the file so that it is formatted for easy reading on a Kindle or the Kindle app. I tried it, and it worked like a charm, making the document much easier to read.If you ever find yourself faced with the same problem, here's how to convert a PDF so it can be easily read... Brain implants could one day restore communication for people with paralysis
Both studies show that it's possible to decode brain signals into speech at a rate of about 60-70 words per minute. | Image: Stanford Two separate studies published today in Nature indicate that, in the future, brain-to-computer interfaces (BCI) could help restore communication for people who can't speak due to severe paralysis. In both studies, researchers used brain implants that could pick up brain signals, which were then translated into sentences on a screen using algorithms. While this isn't a new concept, the exciting thing is that both research teams were able to do this much faster and more accurately than existing technologies. In the study from Stanford, researchers implanted electrodes into the brain of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in two areas associated with speech. The BCI was designed to detect brain activity when the patient was... Continue reading...

The tablet's also on sale over at Amazon, although it's only in stock in a few colorways.Considering the latest 10th-gen iPad sells for just $50 less, the iPad Air offers a lot of value for your money. Peloton’s business still haunted by recalls
Peloton said in its Q4 2023 earnings call that a recent bike seat recall was costlier than expected. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge In its latest earnings call, Peloton reported a net loss of $242 million for the quarter. It also lost 29,000 subscribers from last quarter and had a higher-than-anticipated monthly churn of 1.4 percent. While some of that was attributed to summer doldrums, Peloton noted that costs for a recent bike seat post-recall substantially exceeded" initial expectations to the tune of $40 million. An estimated 15 to 20 thousand members also chose to pause their subscriptions ahead of receiving replacement seats. But speaking of recalled products, Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy said in its quarterly shareholder letter that the company plans to resume US presales of the Tread Plus this holiday season for a retail price of around $6,000. India’s Chandrayaan-3 probe successfully lands on the lunar south pole
India is now the first nation to successfully achieve a soft landing near the Moon's southern pole. | Photo by INDRANIL MUKHERJEE / AFP via Getty Images India's Chandrayaan-3 mission has made space travel history today by successfully achieving a soft landing near the south pole of Earth's Moon, just days after Russia's Luna 25 spacecraft crashed while trying to land in the same region. India is now the fourth nation to achieve a soft Moon landing and the first to have successfully touched down on the lunar south pole - a little-explored area of the Moon that's believed to contain water ice.Three other nations - the US, China, and the former Soviet Union - have all previously achieved a soft landing near the Moon's equator, a safer region with (comparatively) amiable temperatures and terrain and reliable sunlight to recharge solar-powered instruments. The false promises of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving

You will be able to nap in your car while it drives you to work, he promised. It will even be able to drive cross-country with no one inside the vehicle. But while Musk would eventually ship an advanced driver-assist system that he called Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta, the idea that any Tesla owner could catch some z's while their car whisks them along is, at best, laughable - and at worst, a profoundly fatal error.Since that 2016 announcement, hundreds of fully driverless cars have rolled out in multiple US cities, and none of them bear the... Samsung’s 57-inch ‘Dual UHD’ gaming monitor gets a price and release date

If you're in the UK the monitor is available to preorder from today for 2,199.99.If the Odyssey Neo G9 sounds familiar, then that might be for a couple of reasons. Samsung first teased the monitor last November before officially announcing it at CES in January 2023, albeit without a price or firm release date. But the Odyssey Neo G9 name might also sound familiar because Samsung released a 49-inch model under the same name in 2021 that only offered the combined resolution of two 1440p displays.
