Rabbit, Ballie, and the other gadgets of CES 2024
Image: Alex Parkin / The Verge The best gadgets at CES are the ones you'd never see coming. Not the iterative updates, where everything gets a little brighter and a little faster but nothing fundamentally changes. No, we like the E Ink toilets and the crab-walking cars and the rolling projectors that show you what's inside your fridge. Do you need all these things? Does anyone? Will they ever go on sale? Who knows?! That's the fun of CES.On this episode of The Vergecast, recorded from the Kia Connected Home right in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center parking lot, we discuss all the most important gadget stories from this year's show. We talk about the Rabbit R1, which was easily the surprise hit of the show. We discuss Ballie, Samsung's adorable robot... Continue reading...
Oppenheimer will stream on Peacock in February
Image: NBCUniversal Oppenheimer is coming exclusively to Peacock. If you haven't gotten a chance to watch the three-hourlong epic from Christopher Nolan in theaters, now you can watch it from home starting February 16th.Oppenheimer chronicles the life and work of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), a physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II. The film, based on a biography of Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, also stars Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife Katherine Kitty" Puening, Matt Damon as Major General Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. as US Atomic Energy Commission commissioner Lewis Strauss. In addition to Oppenheimer, several other films from Nolan... This high-tech sex toy syncs its vibes with music
The Oh! by OhDoki is the company's second interactive sex toy. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge Every once in a while, you'll turn a corner on the CES show floor and see crowds flocking around a high-tech sex toy. This year, the one that caught my eye was The Handy, an automated masturbator - mainly because it was moving in a way I don't expect to see in polite company, let alone a public show floor. But right next to it was the Oh!, a $149.95 toy coming later this spring that had me also saying Oh?"Both sex toys are made by Norwegian sex tech company Ohdoki. The Handy, a motorized device that moves up and down to mimic masturbation for people with penises, is certainly the flashier of the two. At a glance, the Oh! is unassuming as far as vibrators go. What makes it different is how it vibrates. Most vibrators are simple... Continue reading...
Apple won the CES headset game without showing up
Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Apple isn't at CES, but it had a huge presence anyway. On Monday, just before a string of CES keynotes were set to kick off, the company announced that its Vision Pro headset would be launching on February 2nd. Apple had already promised that the headset would launch early this year. So the stage was set for its rivals to compete by making CES 2024 a showcase of new ideas about virtual and augmented reality.Ultimately, that didn't pan out. Lots of companies showed up with AR and VR tech. A lot of the headsets offered similar functionality to the Vision Pro, like an AR / VR monitor for your computer or a substitute TV. But none were as impressive a package as Apple's headset, nor were most arriving nearly as soon. Photo... Continue reading...
How to report problems on the road in Apple Maps or Google Maps
The Verge It's always frustrating to get caught in a traffic jam because of a lane closure or because everyone is rubbernecking a recent fender bender. But even if you're stuck, you can gain some karmic points and help others avoid the situation by reporting it via Apple Maps or Google Maps.Your report on its own may not be enough to get a warning placed on the map, but if enough people make the same report - Apple calls it having a high level of confidence" - then Apple or Google will probably take action and add an update. These reports can be made from inside the mobile apps and on Apple CarPlay - though, at the time of writing, this couldn't be done through Android Auto.Bear in mind that keeping yourself and your passengers safe is much... This might be the year of the smart ring
J-Style is one of the many smart rings I stumbled upon on the show floor. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge For the past few years, the Oura Ring has been the most recognizable smart ring on the market. After what I saw on the CES show floor, it's about to get some real competition. The smart ring is a promising form factor, but it's tricky to get right. It's more discreet and comfortable for sleep tracking than a smartwatch. The underside of your finger is also a better place to take heart rate and blood oxygen readings than your wrist. The downside is that it's challenging to create a device that's stylish given how small and flexible the components need to be. Plus, they tend to be pricey, with fewer features than a smartwatch. There are all reasons why I was surprised to see several working prototypes and products at CES. I genuinely can't... Microsoftwants to automatically launch its Copilot AI on some Windows 11 devices
Image: Microsoft Microsoft has started testing a change to Windows 11 that will see its AI-powered Copilot feature automatically open when Windows starts on widescreen devices." The change is being tested as part of Microsoft's latest Dev Channel preview of Windows 11, allowing Windows testers to provide feedback ahead of a broader rollout. We are trying out opening Copilot automatically when Windows starts on widescreen devices with some Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel," says Microsoft in a blog post. The company doesn't make it clear what exactly a widescreen" device is, but the Windows 11 setting itself says Copilot will automatically open when you're using a wider screen." So I'm assuming this is limited to ultrawide monitors and less... Continue reading...

Rivian aims to slash carbon footprint of its next-generation EVs
Photo by Daniel Golson for The Verge Rivian released its first-ever environmental and social impact report, in which the company commits to building a new generation of electric vehicles that are even less polluting than its current generation.Rivian said its goal is to launch a product by 2030 with half the lifecycle carbon footprint" as its 2022 R1 vehicles, which include the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. Lifecycle carbon footprint" refers to all the greenhouse gas emissions, direct and indirect, associated with a product's activities. The first two Golden Sun games arrive on Nintendo Switch Online next week
Image: Nintendo Two classic Game Boy Advance role-playing games are coming to the Nintendo Switch next week: 2001's Golden Sun and 2002's Golden Sun: The Lost Age. The games will either be available on January 17th according to this tweet or the 16th according to this press release (presumably this confusion is timezone-related, and we've followed up with Nintendo for clarification). But regardless of the exact date, they'll be available as part of a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. We've known at least one of these games was coming to the Switch ever since Golden Sun made an appearance as part of Nintendo's original announcement about Game Boy games coming to its subscription service. But it's taken roughly a year for that tease to... Continue reading...
Ayaneo’s Next Lite is a $299 Steam Deck competitor with unofficial SteamOS
The Ayaneo Next Lite. | Image: Ayaneo Ayaneo's attempt to launch a bargain-price competitor to the Steam Deck has been confusing, to say the least, but the company has now published a product page that clears most things up. The Ayaneo Next Lite will cost $299, will not ship with an official build of SteamOS but rather an unofficial fork, and come with a four-year-old AMD processor that's arguably less potent than the one in the original Steam Deck LCD.While the company originally advertised that subscriptions" for the handheld will open on Thursday night, that may have been a case of Chinese to English translation getting too literal - the final product page only has a Subscribe" button so you can get emailed with more information about the handheld. A new blog post has... Continue reading...

Dexcom’s new continuous glucose monitor is a health tech gadget with purpose
The Stelo CGM will look similar to the one pictured here and is based on the Dexcom G7. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge Year in and year out, most of the blood glucose tech you see at CES are devices that may not come out for years, if ever. That's why it was refreshing to see Dexcom roll up to CES 2024 to talk about something a bit more tangible: its forthcoming Stelo continuous glucose monitor (CGM), a wearable sensor that provides a real-time look at your blood sugar levels. Unlike most CGMs, the Stelo is specifically designed to be an affordable option for Type 2 diabetics who don't use insulin.Unlike Type 1 diabetes, where a person produces little to no insulin, Type 2 diabetes is when, over time, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or the body becomes insulin resistant. Wi-Fi 7 quietly took off while everyone was looking at AI
Wi-Fi 7 and an RGB touchpad? I'm in. | Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The Verge The biggest names in laptops showed up to CES this week with new designs, new chips, and usually some way to sneak in the term AI." But most of them also quietly arrived with one of the most important upgrades of all for competitive gamers on the go: better Wi-Fi, with support for Wi-Fi 7. It's about time, because router companies shoved Wi-Fi 7 routers out the door throughout 2023, and we've been waiting on machines that can put the standard's ludicrous speed promises to the test.Wi-Fi 7 came to gaming laptops first and foremost, and the focus on gaming makes sense. One of the biggest benefits of Wi-Fi 7 is that it allows for one device to connect to your router on multiple bands - a feature called Multi-Link Operation - which gives... Continue reading...
Clicks hands-on: this BlackBerry-like iPhone case could be a winner
One of Clicks' own marketing images of its yellow keyboard case for iPhone. | Image: Clicks Clicks came out of nowhere last week with a blast from the past - a BlackBerry-like physical keyboard for your iPhone, built into a snazzy protective case with colors that pop. Not only that, the first iPhone 14 Pro version is shipping in just a few weeks for $139. It's from a team that knows a thing or two about keyboards, including CrackBerry Kevin, MrMobile, and the guys behind the F(x)tec phone. As a known lapsed QWERTY devotee, I had to try it, and at CES 2024 I got my chance.

Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are matching their best prices to date
Right now, you can save up to $200 on Google's latest flagship phones. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge We're firmly living in 2024, and if there's no other tradition to lean on after setting your New Year's resolutions, you invariably can rely on Samsung's tone-setting phone announcements to make early ripples. Rumor has it we'll see the Galaxy S24 series in short order, and phones like the Pixel 8 family may lose a bit of sheen in its wake. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro aren't suddenly obsolete, however, and that'll only lead to sharper discounts. In fact, this dream duo (we think they're two of the best Android phones you can buy right now) is already seeing substantial price cuts despite being just a few months old.Right now, the 128GB Pixel 8 is back down to its Black Friday price of $549 ($150 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and the Google Store.... Corsair, Asus, and others are making it easier to build a beautiful PC
Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge I hate cables. I hide them in the walls behind my TV, I make them disappear around my desk, and I try to eradicate them everywhere else in my life. So every time I hear about something in the PC building community that involves hiding or removing cables, I get excited. Over the past few years, some of the biggest names in PC building have been making it easier to hide cables away and build a PC that showcases your skills.I've built a lot of PCs over the past 25 years, and the main part of the process I hate the most is cable management. It often takes me longer to tidy up cables and route them properly than it does to put all the parts of a PC together. It's especially bad if you've decided to build a PC with a bunch of RGB fans and an... Continue reading...
Hertz is selling 20,000 EVs so it can buy more gas guzzlers
Don't be sad, Tom Brady. I'm sure the EVs will find a nice home. | Image: Hertz Hertz went from scaling back its electric vehicle ambitions to selling off its actual EVs in the span of three months. The rental car agency said in a regulatory filing today that it will sell 20,000 vehicles, or roughly one-third of its global EV fleet, and use that money to buy gas guzzlers. The decision was made after Hertz reported higher depreciation and damage than expected to its EVs, amounting to $245 million in costs for the company. Also, Hertz apparently couldn't find enough customers for the EVs in its fleet, so selling a huge chunk of them will better balance supply against expected demand of EVs," the company said. The company had previously set a target for 25 percent of its fleet to be electric by the end of 2024.The... Continue reading...

The voice - possibly belonging to Makee (Charlie Murphy), Master Chief's girlfriend - continues, saying she will be the instrument of their extinction. Sony’s Afeela needs to be more than a feeling
A look into the latest Sony Afeela prototype car, from the driver's side. | Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge It's been four years since we called Sony's concept car the best surprise of CES. And I get it: one does not build a car company overnight. But here at CES 2024, it feels like Sony Honda Mobility is still building a concept car - dare I say, a Vision - rather than a vehicle focused on the road. Maybe that's part of the charm? The Afeela has gotten more car-like in some ways since last year's full announcement: big side mirrors, wireless phone chargers, and some more actual car specs. The all-wheel drive prototype has two 180kW motors (roughly 483 horsepower), a 91kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and up to 150kW fast DC charging. But when we climbed inside the Afeela's cabin for the first time at CES, as you'll see in our embedded gallery... How to sue a hacker using Bitcoin
The easiest way to drop papers on someone! | Nick Barclay / The Verge Friends, I believe we've found the most compelling use of the blockchain yet: serving people with legal documents. It is, in fact, even easier to serve notice of a lawsuit to someone using blockchain technology than it is in real life, because you don't need a person's identity to do it. What a breakthrough! The case in question is a lawsuit by Ryan Dellone, who has served a wallet belonging to an unknown individual with notice that they're being sued, Krebs on Security reports. Slack’s Catch Up feature is like Tinder for your work messages
Catch Up is supposed to make it faster to get up to speed on all the Slack stuff you care - and don't care -about. | Image: Slack Slack is adding a new feature to its mobile app, meant to help you triage all your unread stuff a little faster. It's called Catch Up, and the only way I can describe it is Tinder for Enterprise Messaging. When you tap on Catch Up at the top of the app's homescreen, it'll show you one channel or DM at a time; swipe left to mark it read, right to leave it unread.Catch Up is a response to two things Akshay Bakshi, a product management director at Slack, says the company sees a lot. First, there's just a lot going on in Slack, and opening every channel one by one just to check in on it and mark it read in the sidebar is a pin. Second, a lot of people use their phone as a Slack-triage device. Before they get to their desk in the morning,... Continue reading...

Luckily, Victrola sells two cheaper alternatives: the Stream Carbon and the Stream Onyx, both of which are on sale from Victrola thanks to promo code SPIN10. Right now, you can pick up the former for $630 ($170 off) and the latter for $360 ($240 off), which is an all-time low on the entry-level model.Unlike the Stream Sapphire, you can't use either of the two turntables to stream records to just about any device. Bloomberg first reported that the video game streaming platform was planning layoffs on Tuesday, and the company confirmed today that the cuts were happening.I regret having to share that we are taking the painful step to reduce our headcount by just over 500 people across Twitch," Clancy wrote. This will be a very hard day."In March 2023, Twitch cut 400 roles as part of larger layoffs at parent company Amazon that saw 18,000 people lose their jobs. VinFast shows off a midsize truck and small utility EV for North America
Image: VinFast Vietnam's VinFast must really want a slice of the EV market in the US based on the vehicles it brought to CES in Las Vegas this year: a midsize pickup truck that looks to be about the same size as the Toyota Tacoma, and a small utility EV called the VF3 that was first introduced last year.Theoretically, both of these vehicles could sell really well in the US. Trucks are some of the most popular vehicles in the country, and a midsize electric truck could do quite well given most of the segment is dominated by full-size ones. A small, affordable crossover like the VF3, which aims for mass-market appeal, could help folks who are on a budget go fully electric.Theoretically, both of these vehicles could sell really well in the USBut all... Jackery’s rooftop tent is also a powerful solar generator
The retractable panels help generate up to 4.96kWh per day in the Western US, according to Jackery. | Image: Jackery Jackery has converted the humble rooftop tent into a powerful solar generator that lets any car escape the grid for a weekend or longer. Although it's just a concept on show at CES right now, Jackery says it will put the tent into production sometime near the end of 2024.The retractable solar panels are said to produce up to 1000W when the car is parked and the tent is open and facing south. That's enough to generate 4.96kWh per day in the Western US, or 4kWh as you move east, according to Jackery's estimates. There's no mention of its resilience to wind, but that's hardly a concern for a concept parked on ugly carpet inside the Las Vegas Convention Center.Rooftop tents can already be fitted with solar panels made by any number of...
