Notion’s new Q&A feature lets you ask an AI about your notes
Q&A tries to both answer your questions and cite its sources. | Image: Notion The first killer app of AI for businesses, it appears, is a simple thing: to be able to find information in the morass of files, folders, attachments, incompatible enterprise software apps, and everything else that constitutes modern knowledge work. Notion, which aims to replace most of those things in a single tool, is launching a feature it thinks can help. It's called Q&A, and CEO Ivan Zhao describes it to me as essentially an all-knowing AI executive assistant that knows everything about everything and can find it in a second or two.Notion Q&A is available to all Notion users, whether you use it alone or through work, and it'll cost between $8 and $10 per person per month. The tool has a lot in common with Microsoft's Copilot and G... Continue reading...
Opal’s second camera is the Tadpole, a tiny webcam for laptops
The Tadpole is meant to just clip right over top of your laptop's webcam. | Image: Opal Two years ago, Opal launched a camera with a tweet. (They were still called tweets back then.) It was the middle of a global pandemic, a work-from-home revolution, and a truly brutal time to start a hardware company - and Opal suddenly had tens of thousands of people signed up for the webcam that Alexis Ohanian, the Reddit co-founder and Opal investor, promised was mind blowing." Opal at the time had four employees, CEO Veeraj Chugh tells me, and it took all the company's time and attention just to ship cameras as fast as it could. The process of developing its second camera, which is called the Tadpole and is launching today, has apparently been much smoother. Opal has a real hardware team and supply chain now; it was able to go back... Continue reading...

Venmo groups debuts today and will roll out over coming weeks." | Image: Venmo / Crop: The Verge Venmo has started rolling out a new Venmo Groups" feature that aims to make it easier to organize and share common expenses with others. The company says the feature will let people track, split, and manage group expenses.Basically, the company is appealing to anyone who has had to deal with spreadsheets or turned to other apps like Splitwise or SettleUp to manage group expenses like dinner with your friends or that big group trip to Disney World. With this new groups feature, users can do it all right in Venmo, and it's something that probably should've been added a long time ago, considering the app's sort-of social media nature. How to electrify your life when you rent
Illustration by Nico H. Brausch for The Verge Two years ago, Caroline Spears was finally living on her own, roommate-free, in a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, where the cost of living continues to go up. She was drawn to its affordability and space. It was a great work-from-home spot," Spears said. She didn't foresee, however, the high energy bills that would result from cranking up the gas heater when her apartment would turn into an icebox in the winter. The pollution from using a gas heater was also a major concern. Spears, founder of the Climate Cabinet, a national climate organization dedicated to winning elections, saw this challenge as a new project. So she got to it.She hired a contractor to test the apartment's energy efficiency. Despite the evidence, Spears'... Continue reading...
Is AI the answer to sustainable farming?
Illustration by Nico H. Brausch for The Verge What happens when a robotics expert and a sixth-generation farmer decide to start a company together? They spend most of their time grappling with one looming problem: climate change. In 2020, Gilwoo Lee, the robotics expert, and Casey Call, the farmer, founded Zordi, an agricultural platform that blends AI and robotics with greenhouse growing. A recent graduate of the University of Washington, Lee was stuck at home during the wildfires. That was just a very strong signal of climate change happening. I was already committed to starting my own company with something where my robotics and AI can make a big difference when it comes to impact," Lee said.Call, who is the head grower and an agronomist at Zordi, says he'd seen the impact of... Uber is testing a service that lets you hire drivers for chores
I guess that means your Uber driver can collect you from Ikea and then build your furniture when you get home. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Uber is experimenting with a new service that allows users to hire drivers from its app to complete everyday household chores and projects, in a bid to expand beyond its existing ridesharing and courier business. The service, called Uber Tasks, will launch as a small pilot" in the coming weeks in Fort Myers, Florida and Edmonton, Alberta. The news, first reported by Bloomberg, confirms an earlier report from the publication in September that found evidence for a new Chore" option within the Uber app's code. YouTube is going to start cracking down on AI clones of musicians
Photo by Prince Williams/Wireimage YouTube will have two sets of content guidelines for AI-generated deepfakes: a very strict set of rules to protect the platform's music industry partners, and another, looser set for everyone else. That's the explicit distinction laid out today in a company blog post, which goes through the platform's early thinking about moderating AI-generated content. The basics are fairly simple: YouTube will require creators to begin labeling realistic" AI-generated content when they're uploading videos, and that the disclosure requirement is especially important for topics like elections or ongoing conflicts. The labels will appear in video descriptions, and on top of the videos themselves for sensitive material. There is no specific definition... Continue reading...
Latest US climate assessment shows the extreme toll taken by climate change

This is the fifth one - but for the first time, this year's report includes chapters dedicated to economic impact and social inequities. Threads finally lets you delete your account separately from Instagram
Image: The Verge Meta is rolling out a way for you to delete your Threads profile without having to delete your Instagram account, too. You'll be able to access the new feature from the settings menu in a new Delete or Deactivate Profile" section, according to a post from Instagram boss Adam Mosseri. I don't have the feature yet myself, but I suspect Meta will make it available to everyone soon enough. This new ability to delete just your Threads profile addresses an early complaint with the app, which currently requires that you sign up with an Instagram account. A Google witness let slip just how much it pays Apple for Safari search
Illustration: The Verge Google gives Apple a 36 percent cut of all search ad revenue that comes from Safari, according to University of Chicago professor Kevin Murphy. Google had fought to keep the number confidential, but Bloomberg reports that Murphy shared the figure while testifying in Google's defense today at the Google antitrust trial.Google has long paid to be the default search engine in Safari and other browsers like Firefox, spending $26.3 billion in 2021 alone for the privilege. $18 billion of that went to Apple, but the specifics of where the number came from remained secret until now. Netflix says the cloud will let it expand beyond mobile games

We feel like there is a real big opportunity with cloud to create a certain type of game experience that really is tailored to Netflix on TV," says Leanne Loombe, Netflix's head of external games.Netflix's cloud gaming efforts are still very early and follow nearly two years of releasing games exclusively on mobile. Right now, only two titles are available as part of a cloud beta test on TVs and PCs, including Oxenfree. But as the service grows to include more titles, Netflix says that the kinds of games offered will differ based on platform - meaning there will eventually be titles on Netflix designed to play only on your television or... Amazon’s latest Fire TV Stick 4K Max is on sale for a new low price
The new Fire TV Stick 4K Max looks just like any old streaming stick from Amazon, but its upgrades are most prominent on the inside. | Image: Amazon As Black Friday deals continue trickling in early, more recent devices are going on sale for the first time or for new lows. One example is Amazon's new Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which came out just a couple of months ago and is now on sale for $39.99 ($20 off) at Amazon and Best Buy.The new flagship 4K streaming stick from Amazon is a lot like the last-gen model, but it packs better specs with Wi-Fi 6E support and 16GB of storage instead of 8GB while maintaining HDR support that includes HDR10 and HDR10 Plus. The Garfield Movie’s new trailer will put you in a real Monday kind of mood
Columbia Chris Pratt's turn as Mario worked because Illumination and Nintendo took care to make sure The Super Mario Bros. Movie's red-hatted plumber sounded distinct yet enough like Charles Martinet's take on the character to pass the smell test. For fans of Jim Davis' Garfield comics, there was hope that Columbia might take a similar approach with The Garfield Movie, its new animated feature from director Mark Dindal starring Pratt as the eponymous orange cat. But from the sounds of The Garfield Movie's new trailer, Pratt might be playing the lasagna-obsessed cat very straight.Along with detailing how he first met his human, The Garfield Movie will tell the story of how Garfield's life is turned upside down when he learns that his father Vic... WhatsApp is adding a new way to voice chat with large groups
Voice chats don't automatically ring everyone in a group. | Image: WhatsApp WhatsApp is rolling out a new voice chat feature in the coming weeks that's designed to be a less disruptive way to conduct voice calls in large groups. The feature was previously spotted releasing in beta, but WhatsApp has now made the news official.Although it's long been possible to voice call on WhatsApp with up to 32 participants, the new voice chat feature works a little differently. Group participants won't be rung automatically when a voice chat starts; instead, they'll receive a push notification, and there'll be an in-chat bubble they can tap to join.Once a voice chat is underway, call controls will be accessible from the top of a chat without obscuring a participant's ability to send text messages at the same time. Zelle banks have been paying back scam victims after government pressure
Illustration by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The banks that participate in the Zelle payments app owned by JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and others have relented in their refusal to pay back victims of imposter scams. Reuters reported today that the repayments started on June 30th and were a response to lawmaker pressure on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to compel lenders to reimburse victims.Banks leaned on the fact that federal law only required them to pay back fraud victims if they didn't authorize criminal transactions, leaving people who were tricked into approving payments in a lurch. Reuters wrote that the institutions were worried that if they started paying people back, it would only encourage more imposter fraud. But the Federal Trade Commission said... Continue reading...
Nvidia is launching a new must-have AI chip —as customers still scramble for its last one

The new GPU upgrades the wildly in demand H100 with 1.4x more memory bandwidth and 1.8x more memory capacity, improving its ability to handle intensive generative AI work. The big question is whether companies will be able to get their hands on the new chips or whether they'll be as supply constrained as the H100 - and Nvidia doesn't quite have an answer for that. The first H200 chips will be released in the second quarter of 2024, and Nvidia says it's working with global system manufacturers and cloud service providers" to make them available. The H200 appears to be substantially the same as the H100 outside of its memory. The fight to save old video games
Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge When I ask Frank Cifaldi, the founder and director of the Video Game History Foundation, to explain the importance of preserving and maintaining old video games, he answers with a movie analogy. Imagine, he said, if movies were only released on, like, VHS, ever. You want to watch Back to the Future? All right, you have to go on eBay, and you have to find an antique VHS copy that's degraded a bit from use. You have to find a VCR that works, a TV that it plugs into - or the external scalers that make it look correct on your modern TV - and you might need a time-base corrector because the magnetic flux signal is out of sync."For too many games, this is the state of the industry. For the most part, decades' worth of games now exist only... Continue reading...
Sony’s PlayStation Portal gives a confusing first impression
The Portal boots up and prompts you to connect to your PlayStation 5. Beyond that, there's not much going on. Sony's new PlayStation Portal that launches November 15th is a $199.99 device that does just one thing: it streams games via Wi-Fi off of your home PlayStation 5, requiring that you already own Sony's pricey console. It doesn't do any kind of cloud streaming like Nvidia's Geforce Now or Sony's own PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, and it can't run anything locally (not even YouTube or Netflix). The Portal is purpose-built to use a singular feature Sony first debuted with the PS3 and PSP back in 2006 that's also widely available on other devices you may already own, making me wonder: why does this exist? After spending a couple of days with it, I'm still not sure. The Portal hardware is essentially what you'd get after sticking an... Continue reading...

An OLED iPad Pro is the upgrade I’ve been waiting for
Image: Dan Seifert / The Verge Apple started using OLED screens in the iPhone X back in 2017, and before that, in the first Apple Watch. And the Touch Bar, of course (RIP). I want OLED on all those things, but if the iPad Pro gets it first, as rumor has it, then that's fine by me.There's no product where the use of an LCD panel bothers me more than my 11-inch iPad Pro. Panera's tip prompts are slightly better because you can choose a dollar amount, and there's a disclosure that your tip may" be distributed to eligible employees. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge Tipping is an age-old American debate. How much do you pay and when? Is it a choice or an obligation? Generally, tech has at least made it easier over the years. Smartphones made it a breeze for friends to whip out a calculator to figure out tip and split the bill. And now, checkout screens everywhere, from in-person stores to delivery apps, have added buttons designed to make it easier for you to tip. That's convenient, until it's not. According to a new Pew Research Center report, tipping culture in America has seen a shift in recent years. Seventy-two percent of Americans say tipping is expected in more places than five years ago. Not all of that is tech-related, but it's hard to deny the role checkout screens have in tipflation. Apple’s midrange ‘Pro’ M3 chip isn’t looking like a huge upgrade
The M3 Pro is not as midrange as you'd expect. | Image: Apple Apple's new M3 Pro chip is looking like an odd duck in an otherwise solidly improved MacBook Pro laptop. But year-over-year computer upgraders who might already have a Mac with an M2 Pro chip or even an M1 Pro might not see many (if any) performance improvements unless they shell out more dough for an M3 Max.When you put the 12-core M2 Pro and M3 Pro head-to-head, you'd expect the latter to perform much better. Apple reportedly cut a deal to get cleaner Amazon pages
Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Apple struck a deal with Amazon to strip competitors' ads off of pages for iPhones, iPads MacBooks, and its other products, according to a report from Insider. The agreement makes search results and product pages for Apple devices cleaner than those of competitors. While Amazon still lists competing products on search result pages for Apple products, it limits the ads it sticks above, below, and between results. For example, when you search for an iPhone 15 on Amazon, you'll only see an Apple product in a banner at the top of the page along with another ad banner at the very bottom. Meanwhile, searches for competing devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S23, surface ads for other products and services throughout the results page. ... Continue reading...

But in a new clip from the show that's just dropped as part of Netflix's Geeked Week showcase, it looks like 3 Body Problem (that's how Netflix is spelling it) is going to get one of its most important worldbuilding elements very right in a way that makes the story's deeper mystery interesting to watch unfold. While the new teaser clip debuted during Geeked Week doesn't really broach the way 3 Body Problem's story delves into China's past and what becomes of humanity at one of the most pivotal...
