Meta sets GPT-4 as the bar for its next AI model, says a new report
Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge Meta has been snapping up AI training chips and building out data centers in order to create a more powerful new chatbot it hopes will be as sophisticated as OpenAI's GPT-4, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company reportedly plans to begin training the new large language model early in 2024, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg evidently pushing for it to once again be free for companies to create AI tools with. The Journal writes that Meta has been buying more Nvidia H100 AI-training chips and is beefing up its infrastructure so that, this time around, it won't need to rely on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform to train the new chatbot. The company reportedly assembled a group earlier this year to build the model, with the goal of speeding... Continue reading...
WhatsApp is working on cross-platform messaging
Illustration: The Verge A WhatsApp for Android beta update (version 2.23.19.8) that came out today contains a new screen called Third-party chats, reports WABetaInfo. For now, the screen is neither functional nor accessible by users, according to WABetaInfo. But its title is a strong clue that this is likely the first step to opening Meta's encrypted messages app to cross-platform compatibility. The beta comes just days after the European Commission confirmed that WhatsApp owner Meta meets the definition of a gatekeeper" under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires communication software like WhatsApp to interoperate with third-party messaging apps by March 2024. WABetaInfo tweeted a screenshot of the screen:

Elon Musk’s X is suing California over its online moderation reporting bill
Illustration: The Verge Elon Musk's X Corp. is suing the state of California over AB 587, a state bill requiring social media platforms to report to the state attorney general, semiannually, how they're tackling moderation of certain categories of speech. The complaint alleges that the bill violates federal and state free speech laws because it compels companies like X Corp. to engage in speech against their will," as they're forced to settle on definitions for politically-charged" issues like hate speech or racism.X Corp.'s complaint explains that it's difficult to reliably define" hate speech, misinformation, political interference, and other content categories. It adds that defining them is often fraught with political bias" because there's no accepted... Continue reading...
Get Hulu with live TV for a major discount during Disney’s Charter spat
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Disney has announced that until October 11th, it will offer a three-month deal on Hulu plus Live TV for $49.99 per month. The $20-a-month discounted subscription, which includes ad-supported Hulu, Disney Plus, and ESPN Plus, comes right as the final weekend of the US Open championships gets underway and the first NFL games of the season happen.Disney's Hulu trial is well-timed, given its spat with Spectrum leaving cable customers with legally dubious options for watching some of the year's biggest sports events. That includes tennis player Daniil Medvedev, who last week said he had to use pirate streams to watch the US Open while playing in it since the hotel TVs were connected to Spectrum. Medvedev, who won the tournament in 2021,... Continue reading...

Can you guess how many apps we have on our phones?
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge As you can imagine, there are a lot of interesting - and occasionally off-the-wall - conversations that take place on The Verge's Slack channels, especially when the weekend is on its way. One of them occurred recently, when reviewer Jennifer Pattison Tuohy happened to ask how many apps people had on their phones. The reaction was immediate - and actually rather telling. It turns out you can find a lot about a person when you talk to them about their phone - and their apps.If you're at all curious about how many apps some of The Verge's staffers have on their phones (and their excuses for that number) - read on.I currently have 31 apps on my iPhone 12 Mini. Why is it so hard to find a good PopSocket alternative?
This one that I got off Amazon for $20 is alright. But it doesn't do everything I need it to. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge I like big phones, but I cannot lie. They come with tradeoffs. Namely, despite having large hands and piano fingers, my iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn't always feel secure in my grasp. That's fine when I'm in bed, surrounded by soft blankets and pillows. It's less fine when I'm trying to text one-handed on public transit or running errands.I first encountered this problem with my first Big Phone, the iPhone XS Max. Get a PopSocket, everyone said. So I did. I had to begrudgingly admit it worked, even if they were ugly as sin. I even upgraded to a PopWallet Plus. But like Icarus, I flew too close to the sun. I'd thought because my original PopSocket had never fallen off, the PopWallet Plus was safe.It was not. Photo by... Continue reading...
VPNs, Verizon, and Instagram Reels: how students are getting around the TikTok ban
The University of Oklahoma blocked TikTok on its devices and networks in December 2022. | Photo by Tharaka Basnayaka / NurPhoto via Getty Images When he first read the email announcing that public universities in Texas had been asked to ban the use of TikTok on their campuses, UT Dallas student Eric Aaberg feared the worst. As a full-time content creator with over 10,000 followers on the platform, the app was central to his life. Would he be forced to delete it? Would he be punished if he were caught using it?I was like, Oh my gosh, are you serious?'" Aaberg recalls. That's so BS. There's no way."Then he learned the reality. UTD was making TikTok inaccessible on its campus-provided networks. For him, that was the extent of the ban.Aaberg immediately relaxed. I was like, Oh, that's nothing,'" he says.Texas is one of over thirty US states that have enacted restrictions... Continue reading...
Sea of Stars is pure RPG comfort food once you push past its slow start
Image: Sabotage Studio Sea of Stars is basically a modern-day SNES RPG. I had a sense that would be the case going in: it has pixel art clearly inspired by 16-bit classics, pits a ragtag group of adventurers against evil forces, uses a clever turn-based battle system, and is filled with stunning music (including a few tracks from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda). But I was glad my hunch was right. I devoured Sea of Stars in a little over a week, and each time I booted it up, I felt like I was playing the type of old-school RPG I would have spent afternoons with as a kid.A lot of that nostalgia came from Sea of Stars' gorgeous pixel art, which looks similar to games like Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger but with an incredible amount of modern-day... The Uber for tasks might just be Uber

A snippet of code seen by Bloomberg includes a new Chore" option, which appears to let users hire people through the app for various jobs. The code suggests that users may be able to hire a worker - reportedly called a tasker" within the app - for at least one hour, as reported by Bloomberg. In addition to specifying the job they want done, users will also have to state how long it might take and when the worker should show up.From there, Bloomberg reports that users will have to enter their address, much like on Uber's food delivery and ridesharing apps. Roblox wants to be a dating app
Screenshot from Roblox's RDC 2023 keynote video Roblox really wants to move beyond being an app for kids, and that includes making it a place where adults actually meet and date. As he closed out Friday's Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) 2023 keynote, CEO David Baszucki predicted that thousands" of adults will meet and form real-life relationships" in dating experiences on the platform over the next five years. It's a wild idea, but Roblox is now in a place where this prediction could feasibly come true. ChatGPT doesn’t want to write your Stucky fanfic
ChatGPT has limits, and pairing Captain America and the Winter Soldier is one of them... sometimes. | Image: Disney / Marvel AI-generated fiction has become a subject of perpetual fascination for me. It's the bane of some writers' existence, yet it's increasingly cropping up across both commercial storefronts like Amazon and noncommercial writing sites like Archive of Our Own (AO3). While some creators painstakingly train their own tools, many simply plug prompts into an off-the-shelf commercial chatbot, particularly OpenAI's ChatGPT. And ChatGPT is not a rarefied artist's tool. It's a platform, which means every word that goes into and comes out of it is moderated to avoid offense and controversy. That raises a fascinating question: what stories should you be allowed to make an AI system tell?Apparently, not ones about Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes being... Continue reading...
