8 great series and movies to stream on Disney Plus
The Verge / Photo courtesy of Disney Disney Plus is a service built primarily around the company's core brands of Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney - and that hasn't changed much this year. 2023's new releases were still dominated by superheroes and Jedi, but there were some Na'vi and Time Lords thrown in for good measure. In fact, this year the service's offerings were particularly solid for sci-fi fans, with stories spanning quite a few galaxies and timelines. If you're new to Disney Plus, here are a few movies and shows to stream first.LokiSince its first season, filled with branching timelines and retrofuturistic tech, Loki has carved out its own distinct space within the MCU while still connecting to (and influencing) the broader multiverse. It's something you can enjoy... Continue reading...
The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
Photo by Kena Betancur/VIEWpress The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, claiming the two companies built their AI models by copying and using millions" of the publication's articles and now directly compete" with its content as a result. As outlined in the lawsuit, the Times alleges OpenAI and Microsoft's large language models (LLMs), which power ChatGPT and Copilot, can generate output that recites Times content verbatim, closely summarizes it, and mimics its expressive style." This undermine[s] and damage[s]" the Times' relationship with readers, the outlet alleges, while also depriving it of subscription, licensing, advertising, and affiliate revenue."The complaint also argues that these AI models threaten high-quality... The Verge’s 2023 in review
The Verge What a year, huh?As 2023 draws to a close, it's time to look back on the year that was. It was a great year for entertainment and a not-so-great year for the people who actually made that entertainment. It was the year Twitter died, and the year Matter mostly failed to launch. Gadgets got gadgety-er, photos got what-is-a-photo-ier, and generative AI was suddenly everywhere. Now through the end of the year, we'll recap the highs and lows in gadgets, social media, and entertainment, and look ahead at how 2024 is shaping up (spoiler: even more AI). We'll talk about our favorite movies and TV shows of the year, including the best stuff on Max, Apple TV Plus, Prime, and Disney Plus, and our favorite games on every platform, from... Amazon Prime Video will start showing ads on January 29th
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to start incorporating ads into movies and TV shows streamed from its Prime Video service, and now the company has revealed a specific date when you'll start seeing them: it's January 29th. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time," the company said in an email to customers about the pending shift to limited advertisements."We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership," the company wrote. Customers have the option of paying an additional $2.99 per month to keep... Apple appeals US ban on Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Series 9
Image: Apple Apple has filed an appeal to the International Trade Commission's decision to ban U.S. sales of Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models, court records show. Additionally, the company is requesting an emergency stay on the ban for at least two weeks until a decision is made on redesigned versions of the banned models. We strongly disagree with the USITC decision and resulting exclusion order, and are taking all measures to return Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to customers in the U.S. as soon as possible," Apple said in a statement to Reuters on Tuesday. 8 great games for your Switch from 2023
The Verge / Image courtesy of Nintendo It's been a fantastic year for the Nintendo Switch. We got new Super Mario games, some great remasters, ports of a few games that previously blew up on PC, and, of course, an absolutely massive sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.Even though the Nintendo Switch's successor is likely just around the corner, there's no shortage of great games to play on the Switch you might already own. Nintendo can take all the time it needs to launch its next console; whenever that comes out, I'll probably still be working through quests in Tears of the Kingdom. Here are some of the best Nintendo Switch games from 2023.Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp Image: Nintendo Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp packages up the... The best shows on Paramount Plus in 2023
The Verge / Photo courtesy of Paramount Plus and IMDB I am a Paramount Plus apologist. I know - going by subscription numbers alone - that I have to be because people do not subscribe to the streaming service at the same rate as Netflix or Amazon Prime, but I spend more time in the Paramount Plus app than the other two. It's got older shows like Star Trek, Frasier, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and newer splashy shows like... everything Taylor Sheridan produces and Frasier. It has a whole mess of football (American) and football (the rest of the world), and while bigger brands like Netflix are only now experimenting with live TV, Paramount Plus has been doing it from the get-go and doing it really well.It is, I think, my desert island streaming service.A lot of new shows aired on the... 10 great Game Pass games for your Xbox
The Verge / Photo courtesy of Bethesda Game Studios Xbox Game Pass might have had a rather slow 2022, but its value has really paid off in 2023. 10 great shows from 2023 to watch on Hulu
The Verge / Photo Courtesy of IMDB and Hulu Hulu got a big price hike this year, but it's getting increasingly harder to cancel (at least for me) thanks to the overwhelming number of shows and movies to watch on the Disney-owned service. While those of us in the US can currently access Hulu separately from Disney Plus, things are about to change very soon.Disney is planning to launch a combined Hulu and Disney Plus app for users who subscribe to both services, and it's set to come out next year after some initial testing. Keep in mind that this won't change the content available on either service, just how you access it. For now, though, here are some of the best shows released on Hulu this year.Only Murders in the Building (Season 3)Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin... Continue reading...

It's been an extremely quiet week on the deals front, with the most notable discounts we've seen landing on Apple's 15-inch MacBook Air, GOTY contender Baldur's Gate 3, and Belkin's 3-in-1 MagSafe charger. Luckily, despite the lack of new deals, there are some solid holiday discounts still hanging around. For instance, you can still snag the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds on sale at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target starting at $249 ($50 off), which remains the best price we've seen on the wireless earbuds since they made their debut earlier in the fall. Illustration by Samar Haddad for The Verge Happy holidays! Here is The Vergecast's gift to you: over 90 minutes of audio content dedicated to USB-C.Every holiday season, we think about what consumer technology standard has impacted our gadgets throughout the year - and without a doubt, 2023's favorite standard has to be USB-C. We saw the iPhone 15 finally switch over to the Type C port, a glimpse of 240W USB-C PD chargers, dongles that can relieve mosquito bites, and whole bunch of high-powered GaN chargers. Though the adoption has been slow since its introduction in 2013, we're almost at a point where we only need one cable to charge all our gadgets (2024 resolution?). The Pixel 8 Pro’s videos get a whole lot brighter with video boost
Only the Pixel 8 Pro gets Video Boost, one of the AI camera features announced at its launch. | Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge When Google introduced Night Sight on the Pixel 3, it was a revelation. It was as if someone had literally turned on the lights in your low-light photos. Previously impossible shots became possible - no tripod or deer-in-the-headlights flash needed.Five years later and taking photos in the dark is old hat - just about every phone up and down the price spectrum comes with some kind of night mode. Video, though, is a different story. Night modes for still photos capture multiple frames to create one brighter image, and it's just not possible to copy and paste the mechanics of that feature to video which, by its nature, is already a series of images. The answer, as it seems to be lately, is to call on AI.When the Pixel 8 Pro launched... Continue reading...

Apple reportedly wants to use the news to help train its AI models

Apparently, the publishers might be potentially on the hook for any legal liabilities that could stem from Apple's use of their content," the NYT says, and Apple has apparently been vague" about its plans for news and generative AI. The future of clean hydrogen in the US could hinge on a new tax credit
Joe Biden visits the Cummins Power Generation Facility in Fridley, Minnesota, on Monday, April 3rd, 2023. Last year, Cummins announced Fridley would be the site of its first electrolyzer manufacturing facility in the US. | Photo by Elizabeth Flores/Star Tribune via Getty Images The Biden administration proposed new tax guidelines today aimed at making it cheaper to produce hydrogen as a less-polluting alternative to fossil fuels. The tax credit comes with strict stipulations around using newly constructed sources of clean energy to produce hydrogen, as opposed to more polluting sources. The guidelines elicited strong reactions from clean energy advocates and industry today, some celebrating, others outraged. Some experts said new guardrails are needed to ensure that the Biden administration's push to develop a domestic supply chain for hydrogen doesn't inadvertently increase pollution. Meanwhile, clean energy trade groups argued that the tax credit is now too restrictive to allow clean hydrogen production to... Continue reading...

A merging of Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount would be very bad

It would further secure Warner Bros. Discovery's control over tentpole IP and allow it to serve as an even more potent rival to Disney and Netflix. It would also be very bad for all of us who just want to watch some shows after work or school. 2024 in laptops: it’s shaping up to be a big year for Windows
The Verge / Photos courtesy of Microsoft and Getty Images 2023 has been a fairly uneventful year for laptops. But 2024 looks set to be one of the most interesting years for laptops since the Windows 8 days, thanks to a new version of Windows, a big AI push, and another attempt at making Windows on Arm a reality.Apple's iPad pushed Microsoft into creating Windows on Arm more than 10 years ago, and laptop manufacturers followed with some weird and wonderful designs to match Windows 8. Podcasts are in the middle of a numbers and people crisis
The Verge / Photo from Getty Images In the podcasting world, the year 2019 may seem like it happened in a parallel universe. There was podcasting before 2019, and there will be podcasting after 2019. What podcasting will look like in 2024 remains very much up for grabs," wrote Quah. And although 2024's outlook still isn't entirely certain, it's pretty obvious that the golden years are over. There were a staggering number of layoffs in podcasting and the audio world at large this year, hitting every entity from public radio to... Continue reading...

American automakers are losing the race to make more fuel-efficient vehicles

Bird may be bankrupt, but shared micromobility is doing just fine

After a number of mergers and some bad financial management, the OG scooter company is going belly up. That can't bode well for the future of scooters in general, right? But actually, shared electric mobility is doing just fine. Sure, the margins are tight and profitability is still rare, but shared scooter and bike companies are becoming more integral to city life in ways we never thought possible. The only thing that's dead is the zero-interest rate-influenced era of unhinged investments and wildly skewed valuations... This unexpectedly charming gadget saved my Christmas lights — and my sanity

The more I thought about it, the trouble didn't seem to be a single bulb, anyway. Half the strand on the middle section of the pre-lit tree was dark, and the internet seemed to agree that one burnt-out bulb shouldn't bring down the whole string.I opened Amazon and typed Christmas tree light voltage checker" into the search bar. Predictably, my search returned a sea of same-looking products made by companies with alphabet-soup names. I clicked on... Continue reading...
