India’s Chandrayaan-3 probe successfully lands on the lunar south pole
India is now the first nation to successfully achieve a soft landing near the Moon's southern pole. | Photo by INDRANIL MUKHERJEE / AFP via Getty Images India's Chandrayaan-3 mission has made space travel history today by successfully achieving a soft landing near the south pole of Earth's Moon, just days after Russia's Luna 25 spacecraft crashed while trying to land in the same region. India is now the fourth nation to achieve a soft Moon landing and the first to have successfully touched down on the lunar south pole - a little-explored area of the Moon that's believed to contain water ice.Three other nations - the US, China, and the former Soviet Union - have all previously achieved a soft landing near the Moon's equator, a safer region with (comparatively) amiable temperatures and terrain and reliable sunlight to recharge solar-powered instruments. During a live stream of the... Continue reading...
The false promises of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving
Image: Owen Grove / The Verge Back in 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stunned the automotive world by announcing that, henceforth, all of his company's vehicles would be shipped with the hardware necessary for full self-driving." You will be able to nap in your car while it drives you to work, he promised. It will even be able to drive cross-country with no one inside the vehicle. But while Musk would eventually ship an advanced driver-assist system that he called Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta, the idea that any Tesla owner could catch some z's while their car whisks them along is, at best, laughable - and at worst, a profoundly fatal error.Since that 2016 announcement, hundreds of fully driverless cars have rolled out in multiple US cities, and none of them bear the... Corsair’s first standing desk is designed for gaming, streaming, and more
Just look at all the stuff you can mount on this desk. | Image: Corsair Corsair's Platform:6 is a modular standing desk that's being targeted at everyone from remote workers to content creators and, naturally, PC gamers. It'll be available to purchase in the fourth quarter of this year, but Corsair's website isn't currently listing any prices for the desk or its many, many accessories. With the Platform:6 due to be offered in multiple configurations that are customizable via an online configurator, it's a little tricky to work out what's included as standard, and what's available as a modular upgrade. But Corsair's press release suggests that the desk comes with dual monitor arms, a cable management tray, and an in-desk storage cubby with built-in USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports. Most interesting is a... Continue reading...
Samsung’s 57-inch ‘Dual UHD’ gaming monitor gets a price and release date
It's a lot of screen, whichever way you cut it. | Image: Samsung Samsung's 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9, its massive gaming monitor that's like having two 32-inch 4K displays sat next to each other, will be available in the US in October for $2,499.99, the company has announced. If you're in the UK the monitor is available to preorder from today for 2,199.99.If the Odyssey Neo G9 sounds familiar, then that might be for a couple of reasons. Samsung first teased the monitor last November before officially announcing it at CES in January 2023, albeit without a price or firm release date. But the Odyssey Neo G9 name might also sound familiar because Samsung released a 49-inch model under the same name in 2021 that only offered the combined resolution of two 1440p displays. A licensed Xbox controller with a bit of a PlayStation vibe. | Image: Hyperkin Third-party controller makers are continuing to pick up the slack from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo when it comes to making more durable, drift-proof controllers. Hyperkin is announcing the Competition, an Xbox-licensed wired controller for Xbox Series X / S and PC with a PlayStation-like symmetrical stick layout that you don't commonly find on Xbox gamepads. But, more importantly, it uses both Hall effect sensors for its sticks and impact triggers to minimize long-term wear and tear. The Competition was once quietly teased way back in the Before Time at E3 2019, but after a long enough delay, Hyperkin revised it to include the upgraded sensors. However, even after all that time, the launch date and price are still not finalized. It's... Continue reading...
OpenAI opens GPT-3.5 Turbo up for custom tuning
Illustration: The Verge OpenAI has announced that businesses can now fine-tune GPT-3.5 Turbo using their own data - OpenAI claims the resulting custom model can match or exceed the abilities of GPT-4 for certain tasks. Later this fall, the company says it will open up the arguably more advanced GPT-4 for the same purpose.Fine-tuning lets businesses essentially hone ChatGPT to a more focused model that's especially efficient for certain tasks. The supervised training would make a bot that's unique to the client company so that it offers, say, reliable responses in a specific language or with more concise wording. Until now, business customers were limited to GPT-3 variants for this, like davinci-002 or babbage-002.The model would come pre-trained, like GPT-4,... Continue reading...

Climate changeis redrawing the disaster map
Vehicles and housing structures are partially submerged after Tropical Storm Hilary flooded a community of unhoused people on August 21st, 2023, in Cathedral City, California. | Photo by Mario Tama / Getty Images Disasters have no borders, and a summer of unexpected catastrophe across the US shows it. California is notorious for drought and fire, not tropical storms like Hilary that barreled over Los Angeles this week. The East Coast expects hurricanes, not the pollution nightmare triggered by smoke that drifted in from blazes hundreds of miles away. Hawaii's native greenery isn't supposed to burn, and yet fires engulfed Maui.Climate change is sending new calamities to new places - a phenomenon that can be observed not just in the US but all over the world. Fandom runs some of the biggest communities on the internet — can CEO Perkins Miller keep them happy?
Photo illustration by Alex Parkin / The Verge Today, I'm talking with Perkins Miller. He's the CEO of Fandom, which runs thousands of wikis for everything from Disney and Taylor Swift to The Matrix and Grand Theft Auto as well as several publications like TV Guide, Metacritic, and GameSpot. It's a big, complicated media company in a big, complicated time for media companies.Fandom started as Wikia - the commercialized sister company to Wikipedia.Wikipedia is the noble community-supported encyclopedia, and Fandom is the explicitly profit-driven entertainment platform, and that means a lot of things that often collide with how people think about wikis. For example, Perkins talks about Fandom like you would any other large ad-supported media company with tons of user-generated... Continue reading...

Ahsoka brings mystery back to Star Wars
Image: Suzanne Tenner / Lucasfilm Ltd. At this point, live-action Star Wars shows are no longer novel. In fact, it's getting pretty crowded out there, with everything from the ongoing adventures of The Mandalorian to series like Andor, Obi-Wan, and The Book of Boba Fett. So, a new story like Ahsoka needs to do something a little different to stand out from the ever-growing pack. And in its first two episodes, the series manages to do just that by focusing on a very specific and important part of the Star Wars mythos: mystery. The show starts out like classic Star Wars, complete with a title crawl (this time in red text) followed by a massive spaceship slowly making its way through the inky expanse of space. The story - which takes place roughly during the same period as The... Continue reading...

Gillette x Razer gamer razor has no lights and has no lasers
Razer's new razor has no RGB, but it'll shave ya. | GilletteLabs After all this time, Razer made a razor. Well. Technically, Gillette made a razor and put Razer's branding on it. Finally, a razor for gamers!Don't confuse this with the Razer Razer, this year's April Fool's Day joke. That was an RGB gaming mouse with an electric shaver built into it. As fun as it would be to have a quick way to get a bunch of beard hair into your keyboard, the reality here is both smarter and more disappointing. To be more specific: they took the five-blade GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar and slapped Razer's acid-green-and-black color scheme and snake logo on it. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E recall to prevent power failures is under investigation
Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is opening a query on Ford's response to a recall last year that affected almost 49,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles, as reported by Automotive News. The June 2022 recall was issued due to a malfunction involving overheating of the electric SUV's high-voltage contactors, which, at worst, can make the EV suddenly lose power on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.Occurances would often follow high-speed battery charging or repeated fast acceleration sessions.Ford issued an over-the-air (OTA) software update to respond to the recall, which was designed to reduce power if the contactors got too hot - in hopes of preventing sudden power loss and possible damage to the contacts....
