Usernames have been reserved for current Medium subscription members until March 20th. | Image: The Verge Popular publishing platform Medium is now fully embracing the Twitter alternative Mastodon by opening up its new me.dm instance to paying Medium community members. Joining the Mastodon server requires a subscription to Medium for $5 per month (or $50 per year) which enables perks on the site like ad-free browsing and offline reading. Mastodon instances are generally free to join.Medium is one of the first notable tech companies to utilize Mastodon as a premium social media experience, which is interesting given the publishing company’s historic connections with Twitter. Medium co-founders Ev Williams and Biz Stone also co-founded Twitter back in 2007. A great deal of Mastodon’s recent success was born out of ongoing turmoil with Twitter... Continue reading…
Uber’s new pickup directions and walking ETAs can finally help you escape the airport
Uber’s app is adding walking directions inside airports to get you to the baggage claim and out the door. | Image: Uber We’ve somehow gone years without Uber holding our hands from the gate to the baggage claim area, out the door, and to an Uber pickup zone where a normal reserved Uber X ride is waiting for us. Now the company is making all of that possible: giving users full walking instructions — complete with photos — for various airports, adjusted ETA times that include walking to baggage claim, and expanding Uber Reserve options that includes booking rides up to 90 days in advance.“You’re not just getting to and from the airport, but also getting through it with less stress,” Uber’s head of product for rides, Jen You, states in a press release. Fairphone 2 gets its final software update, seven years after original release
The Fairphone 2, released in 2015. | Photo by James Vincent / The Verge After over seven years and 43 software updates, Fairphone’s second-generation Android smartphone is finally reaching the end of its software support period. The company says today’s software update for Android 10 will be the phone’s last, capping off a remarkably long support period for a phone that originally ran Android 5 when it started shipping in 2015. Not bad considering Fairphone says it had originally hoped to support the phone with “three to five years” of updates. These kinds of lengthy support periods are important for Fairphone, given the company’s emphasis on the sustainability of its devices. As well as attempting to ethically source the materials that go into each of its phones, the company also designs them to be easily... Continue reading…
Alex Gibney is making a documentary about Elon Musk
Illustration by Laura Normand / The Verge If the constant deluge of news about Elon Musk hasn’t been enough for you, there’s good news: a new documentary about him is in the works from filmmaker Alex Gibney, who’s directed movies like Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, Zero Days, and The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley. It aims to be “a rigorous portrait of Elon Musk,” said Zhang Xin, a producer for the film, according to Variety.Right now, the project is just titled Musk, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Other than the name and the general vibe that it’ll be taking a hard look at one of the world’s richest men and most famous tech CEOs, there currently aren’t a lot of details about the documentary. There’s no release date (or even release year), and it’s unclear... Continue reading…
Apple’siPhoneSE 4 may use OLED screens from a Chinese supplier, notSamsungor LG
The LCD panel used by the 2022 iPhone SE (above) will likely be replaced by a 6.1-inch OLED from Chinese supplier BOE. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge China-based display maker BOE (Beijing Oriental Electronics) has a complicated relationship with Apple. But despite some missteps, it looks like the two companies will be working together for a while longer, at least: a new report from The Elec (spotted by MacRumors) pegs BOE as the display supplier for the rumored iPhone SE 4. This latest report comes as Apple is allegedly working on its own display tech — and trying to lessen reliance on its main display maker and rival, Samsung.Things got off to a rough start with Apple in 2020 when some of BOE’s screens for the iPhone 12 reportedly failed quality tests. Later, Apple caught BOE making unapproved changes to its iPhone 13 display design. And while BOE eventually secured a deal to make... Continue reading…
Microsoft’s latest AI CoPilot could be the voice behind a deluge of work emails
Image: The Verge If you notice that emails from salespeople or responses from customer support agents seem a bit off — or that they’ve gotten a significant bump in writing quality — you may be have AI to thank. Microsoft has announced that it’ll be introducing AI features into Dynamics 365, its set of enterprise apps for customer relationship management and resource planning. The company calls the set of features “CoPilot,” and is pitching it as a way to help businesspeople “create ideas and content faster, complete time-consuming tasks, and get insights and next best actions.” That involves things like having an AI write customizable emails to customers and automatically generate meeting summaries, write a response to customer service chats and emails... How touse Zoom on a Chromebook
Image: Samar Haddad / The Verge Until last year, the way to use Zoom on a ChromeOS device was to download and use Zoom’s ChromeOS app. However, in August of 2022, that app was sunsetted and replaced by the Zoom PWA (progressive web app) for ChromeOS. According to the Zoom blog, the idea was to leverage “web-based technology to deliver a native desktop experience.”Chromebook users were given until February 2023 to switch over to the new app. If you haven’t done that yet or if you’re a little unsure of how to use the new app, here are some quick directions:
Google’s one step closer to building its 1,000-language AI model
Illustration: The Verge As Microsoft and Google butt heads over whose AI chatbot is better, that isn’t the only use for machine learning and language models. Along with rumored plans to show off more than 20 products powered by artificial intelligence during its annual I/O event this year, Google’s progressing toward its goal of building an AI language model that supports 1,000 different languages. In an update posted on Monday, Google shared more information about the Universal Speech Model (USM), a system Google describes as a “critical first step” in realizing its goals.Last November, the company announced its plans to create a language model supporting 1,000 of the world’s most-spoken languages while also revealing its USM model. Google describes USM as “a... Continue reading…
How a single engineer brought down Twitter
Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter’s website is breaking in novel new ways — and while the company managed to recover from its latest outage within a couple of hours, the story behind how it broke suggests there are likely to be similar problems in the near future. On Monday morning, Twitter users logged on to find a thicket of connected issues. Clicking on links would no longer open them; instead, users would see a mysterious error message reporting that “your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint.” Images stopped loading as well. Other users reported that they could not access TweetDeck, the Twitter-owned client for professional users.Chaos took over the timeline, as users tweeted vociferously about the outage — often illustrating their... The new Google Docs and Drive UI starts rolling out today
Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Google has started to roll out an updated UI for Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides that’s meant to fit in with its Material Design 3 language. The apps still work the same way they used to, but Google writes in an announcement post that they should now be a bit more “simplified,” with less clutter and a few improvements and additions.Writing about the update when it was announced in February, my colleague Jay Peters noted that it’s similar to Gmail’s new look, which makes sense given that Google says it’s trying to “streamline core collaboration journeys across our products.” GIF: Google Easily accessible filters are a nice new feature coming with the design update. I’ll point you toward Jay’s article... Continue reading…

Kia’s first extra-large electric SUV is nearing its debut
New Kia EV9 teaser shows off the production version’s silhouette. | Image: Kia For better or worse, environmentally speaking, SUVs are the most popular category of vehicle in the US, and with a few new photos and videos, Kia is teasing the production version of its upcoming EV9 electric SUV. The EV9 will be interesting thanks to its gold star smaller sibling, the EV6, that launched in 2021 — and because we expect it will be dimensionally similar to monstrously large SUVs like the Telluride or Cadillac Escalade. There aren’t a whole lot of three-row electric vehicles on the market yet, let alone full-size ones like the EV9. Some current suburban family-hauling EV options include the Rivian R1S, Mercedes EQS, Model X, and, with a supremely cramped third-row seating option, the Model Y. Image: Kia ... Continue reading…
Why do indie game developers go it alone?
Illustration: Madison Karrh The game development landscape has changed a lot in the last 10 years. The medium-size development studios are few and far between. Instead, you have a lot of behemoth AAA developers who make headlines with big games and big crunch times, and the indies — often solo developers working on contract for larger companies with the hope that their game can break away from the rest and become a big enough hit that they don’t go broke. It’s a challenging and extraordinarily complex world, and to better understand it, Ashley Esqueda spoke with Madison Karrh. Madison is an indie developer, and her game Birth is available right now on Steam. Birth is a puzzle game about building a friend to combat loneliness. Every element of the game was created... Police raid homes of alleged hackers who attacked hospital systems
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge German and Ukrainian police raided the homes of individuals linked to a prominent cybercrime group that stole millions from large companies and organizations over the course of several years. The authorities worked with Europol and the FBI last month to investigate the residences of members of the hacking group, which often goes by the names Indrik Spider, Double Spider, and Grief. The group notably waged a ransomware attack on the Düsseldorf University Hospital in 2020 using its DoppelPaymer ransomware. At the time, German police blamed the attack for the death of a patient who had to be transferred to another hospital due to systemwide corruption. It also carried out an attack on the UK’s National Health Service in 2017 and took... Continue reading…
Twitter fixed its busted links

It took a little less than an hour for most parts of the site to start working again.During the partial outage, trying to click a link showed only an error message that said “your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint.” People also seemed to get the error when visiting the site in Incognito mode or if they weren’t logged in.
Microsoft will now preview the future of Windows with new Canary channel
Image: Alex Castro / The Verge Microsoft is getting ready to publicly test major new Windows features even earlier. While the software giant has been previewing changes to Windows for nearly a decade, a new Canary channel for Windows Insiders will allow anyone to try out “hot off the presses” builds of Windows that include major changes to the kernel, APIs, and other big parts of Windows. It feels like this new Canary channel is preparation work for Windows 12, which Intel and Microsoft have both been hinting at recently.“The new Canary Channel is going to be the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers,” says Amanda Langowski, Microsoft’s head of the Windows Insider program, in a blog post today. “Some... Now the Florida GOP wants political bloggers to register with the government
Photo by Mario Tama / Getty Images Florida has been a hotbed of government speech regulations under Governor Ron DeSantis, who has lately even taken to saying he will control Disney’s content. So it’s not surprising to see other Republican lawmakers in the state take broader shots at the First Amendment — but I was admittedly not expecting the latest one to be a blogger registry. As covered by WFLA last week, state Senator Jason Brodeur has proposed a bill that would require “bloggers” who are compensated for writing about any Florida elected official to register with a state agency — either the Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics, depending on the post’s subject. Registered bloggers must then submit monthly reports disclosing any posts they’ve... Continue reading…

If you travel and want to drown out the droning of your surroundings, meet your buds. | Image: Chris Welch / The Verge There are lots of excellent wireless earbuds available these days, but one shines above the rest when it comes to noise cancellation: the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II. They’re currently one of our top picks for the best earbuds you can buy, and they’re on sale for $249 ($50 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and direct from Bose. The QuietComfort Earbuds II have noise cancellation that is strong enough to (mostly) silence the droning of an airplane. The food we eat is destroying the climate — here’s how to fix it
WASHINGTON DC - AUGUST 26, 2022. A bowl of beef, rice, eggs, and vegetables. | Image: Deb Lindsey for The Washington Post via Getty Images. The global food system, and the agriculture industry that supports it, could cause as much global warming as all human activity has caused since the industrial revolution, new research finds. The planet has already warmed by about 1.1 degrees Celsius since preindustrial times. That might not seem like much, but it’s the primary driver of more extreme weather and a cascade of other dangerous effects from climate change. Under the current status quo, greenhouse gas emissions from our food system alone could warm the planet by an additional degree. That’s enough to blow past global climate goals set under the Paris agreement and significantly intensify climate disasters.Fortunately, there are ways to prevent that grim scenario, according... WhatsApp promises to make its usage terms less confusing
Image: The Verge WhatsApp has committed to making its terms of service agreements more transparent in the European Union after the platform published a highly confusing new policy that made users believe it would share their data with Facebook. In a press release posted to the EU Commission’s website, the agency says WhatsApp will make it easier for users to reject terms of service updates and will more clearly outline what happens when they do.The Meta-owned messaging app caused confusion when it rolled out a new privacy policy in 2021 that appeared to give WhatsApp permission to share user data with Facebook. Facebook’s willing to reform its controversial cross-check program — but only parts of it

How to shoot ProRAW on an iPhone
Recent iPhone Pro models can access a camera feature called ProRAW for more flexible image processing. | Image: Samar Haddad / The Verge When Apple announced the iPhone 12 Pro, it introduced a powerful new camera feature: ProRAW. This feature is available now for all Pro and Pro Max models, starting with the 12 series and newer, and if you’re picky about your photo processing, it’s definitely a feature worth checking out. ProRAW combines the benefits of computational photography with traditional RAW image capture — kind of the best of both worlds. So why would you want to use ProRAW in the first place? Let’s go back to digital photography school. A traditional RAW image file preserves a lot more of the information that’s captured when you take a photo. Sick of hunt-and-peck? Here’s how to touch-type like a pro

You may think you do just fine ham-fisting your way through the keys, but with a little effort, you can learn to type faster, use your fingers more ergonomically, and rarely have to take your eyes off your screen as you clackity-clack-clack-clack along. If you’ve been relying on only a few fingers to type, it’s going to take some time to adjust and get those idle digits cracking along. Ford’s self-repossessing car patent is a nightmare of the connected-car future
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The electric and digital transformation of the car industry comes with a lot of promises for a better tomorrow. News of the patent’s publication was first r... Continue reading…
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty gets off to a ridiculously cool start

As is the fact that Team Ninja, the game’s developers, got Masaaki Yamagiwa — a producer on Bloodborne and the Demon’s Souls remake — to work on the game. The combat is also enticing, familiar enough for Soulsborne fans to get a handle on but just different enough to be interesting and exciting.
