Dungeons & Dragons finally addresses its new Open Gaming License
The company claims that a version of the license that leaked last week was a draft and that controversial restrictions in it will not be present in the final release. | Image: Wizards of the Coast Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) publisher Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has issued a statement addressing outrage from the tabletop gaming community in regard to the company’s upcoming Open Gaming License update. A leaked draft of the new license that applied greater restrictions was badly received by fans of the franchise, resulting in a call from some community members to boycott the Hasbro-owned gaming company. The Open Gaming License (OGL) is a public copyright license that outlines how fans and third-party publishers are permitted to make and monetize their own D&D content. The current version of the license allows third-party publishers relative freedom to create and / or sell content containing elements from the D&D tabletop roleplaying... Continue reading…
A Swiss company says it has pulled CO2 out of the atmosphere and stored it underground
Collector containers at the “Orca” direct air capture and storage facility, operated by Climeworks AG, in Hellisheidi, Iceland. | Image: Arnaldur Halldorsson/Bloomberg via Getty Images Microsoft, Stripe, and Shopify are officially the first companies in the world to pay to filter their carbon dioxide emissions out of the air, store those emissions underground, and have that service verified by a third party. Climate tech company Climeworks announced yesterday that it had completed the service, and its third-party verification of the carbon removal marks a first for the emerging industry. In 2021, Climeworks opened up the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) plant, called Orca, which essentially filters carbon dioxide out of the ambient air. That captured carbon is then supposed to be trapped in basalt rock formations permanently, keeping the greenhouse gas from lingering in our atmosphere and heating up the planet.... Continue reading…

Twitter’s For You timeline appears on desktop browsers now, too
The new tabs are here. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter’s new For You tab, which rolled out to iPhones and iPads on Tuesday, is now appearing on desktop web browsers. The For You tab is the TikTok-inspired name for Twitter’s algorithmically curated “Home” tab, and on iOS, it’s now the default tab you see when you close and reopen the app. You can still access the reverse-chronological list of the latest posts from the people you follow on the “Following” tab (previously “Latest”), though Twitter has removed the star icon to switch between the timelines. For some, this change is now even more annoying since major third-party Twitter apps just stopped working, blocking people’s escape from features or changes they don’t like. As of Friday afternoon, developers of those apps are still... Continue reading…
Judge rejects Elon Musk’s request to move his upcoming securities fraud trial to Texas
Illustration by Kristen Radtke / The Verge; Image: Getty Images A judge rejected Elon Musk’s request to move his upcoming securities fraud trial out of San Francisco, Bloomberg reports. Musk had argued that the jury pool from the city would be biased against him.Musk is facing a civil trial next week stemming from a lawsuit filed by Tesla shareholders who accuse the billionaire of making false statements in his tweets from 2018 about taking the electric vehicle company private. The shareholders argue that Musk’s tweets, in which he claimed he had “funding secured” to take the company private, caused wild swings in Tesla’s share price, costing them billions of dollars. The deal to take Tesla private never materialized, and Musk ultimately lost his chairmanship of the company and was forced to pay a... Another viral iPod app was pulled from Apple’s App Store
Photo Illustration by Grayson Blackmon / The Verge; Getty Images Retro Pod played right into TikTok’s love affair with the iPod. From demos of defunct Minis to outfits showcasing Shuffles as hair clips, an app turning your iPhone into an iPod was naturally going to be a hit. When Retro Pod started making the round in late December, TikTokers praised the app’s ability to replicate the iPod’s “tactile, bumpy, vibratey feels” that have been lost in the era of music streaming. Videos featuring the app racked up nearly 5 million views, but by the second week of January, viewers started commenting they couldn’t find the app at all. Retro Pod had disappeared from the App Store. It is not confirmed why Retro Pod was removed from the App Store — neither the developer of the app nor Apple returned The Verge’s... Continue reading…
YouTube creators are ducking outraged by its swearing policy
Don’t put this article in your video’s thumbnail. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge At exactly 18 seconds into his video “YouTube is Run by Fools,” ProZD makes his feelings on the platform’s recent restrictions on foul language crystal clear: “That’s the dumbest fucking shit I’ve ever heard.”The tirade’s timing was deliberate, meant to test the company’s updated “approach to profanity” that it announced in November: YouTube will now limit ads or completely demonetize a creator’s video if they swear within the first 15 seconds. That may not seem like a huge deal on its own, but it also seems to apply to every video YouTubers have ever created — and they’ve done a whole lot of swearing.ProZD is far from the only creator speaking out about the changes, as YouTube is seemingly on a demonetization spree that’s affecting... A leaked rendering of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra shared by Nieuwe Mobiel. | Image: Nieuwe Mobiel Leaked renders posted by Dutch publication Nieuwe Mobiel reveal the cameras, design, and colors of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Plus. The news comes shortly after similar leaks shared by WinFuture gave us a glimpse into the base Galaxy S23.Like Samsung’s Galaxy S23, the Ultra and Plus seem to share a metal frame and glass cover design that closely resembles the iPhone and pretty much every other slab smartphone from the last few years. Unlike the Galaxy S22 series, all will be available in four of the same colors: black, white, green, and light pink. The images of Samsung’s S Pen-equipped Galaxy S23 Ultra reveal few differences from the rest of the lineup.Like the other S23s in these rendered images, the Ultra’s back appears... Yellowjackets season 2 teaser trailer promises plenty more mysteries
Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood in season 2 of Yellowjackets. | Image: Showtime Showtime hasn’t been shy with teasing the return of Yellowjackets, but now, we finally have a good look at season 2 of the show thanks to a fresh teaser. It’s brief, clocking in at just over a minute, but there’s a lot to dig into: both old and young Misty (Christina Ricci and Samantha Hanratty) crying, Natalie (Juliette Lewis) talking about bringing “darkness” back, and a new character played by Elijah Wood questioning some complicated friendships that revolve around kidnapping and death. It doesn’t give much away about what to expect, though, so don’t worry too much about spoilers. The first season of Yellowjackets wrapped up nearly a year ago and told the story of a high school soccer team that was stranded in the wilderness after a... Clear Calling on the Pixel 7 is like noise cancellation for hard-to-hear phone calls
The Pixel 7 Pro (left) and Pixel 7 (right) support Clear Calling as of December’s feature drop. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge You probably haven’t been on the phone with someone who’s using a serger sewing machine. I have, and I’m here to tell you it sounds like talking to someone who’s in the middle of a raging tornado as it tears through a bus depot. That is, until Google’s Clear Calling feature kicks in. When that happens, the tornado dissipates into a mild windstorm, making it possible to carry on with your conversation. It’s the sort of helpful background feature that Google’s Pixel phones can be so good at delivering. It’s just a shame that most of them won’t get it.When Google announced the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, it talked up a feature that would be coming after launch. Dubbed Clear Calling, it’s designed to reduce background noise on the line when you’re... Continue reading…
How to use your phone to find hidden cameras
Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge To quote a worn — but occasionally true — saying from Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.” The popularity of Airbnb and other informal rentals has coincided with the increased production of cheaper hidden cameras, making it increasingly likely that your stay could be viewed by the person who rented the place out to you.Want to make sure your privacy is being respected? Working Through It
Photo by Stella Kalinina for The Verge Anna* was looking forward to a trip to the US. But this isn’t what she had in mind.Early this year, Anna was living in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she spent years building a life and career in the tech industry. When her boyfriend moved to the Los Angeles area last fall, she chose to stay behind — she, like millions of others, had plans for her future in her home country. Still, they video chatted every day and made plans to visit each other. Anna was set to fly to the US in March 2022 for her next visit. But by the end of February, the world had changed completely. The trip to Los Angeles did happen — but not anywhere near as planned. After spending the night in a bomb shelter in the city center, Anna grabbed a backpack and her cat, escaping... How ‘radioactive data’ could help reveal malicious AIs

While the site has refused to answer any questions, it’s hardly the first news organization to explore replacing human labor with robots: the Associated Press has been publishing automated stories since 2014.This week the New York Times’ Cade Metz profiled Character A.I., a website that lets you interact with chatbots that mimic countless real people and fictional characters. Get a crash course in horror in the new trailer for Netflix’s Junji Ito anime
Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. | Image: Netflix Horror master Junji Ito is bringing his particular blend of scares to Netflix very soon — and you can get a brief taste in a new trailer. The show, which has the somewhat unwieldy title of Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, adapts 20 different stories from the manga artist, from iconic pieces like Tomie to cult material such as Layers of Terror. Netflix says that all of the included stories have “the shared theme of madness,” which, of course, is pretty standard for Ito.The trailer is a brisk run through the included material, giving you a hint of what to expect (namely, lots of body horror and disturbing creatures) without giving too much away. If nothing else, the show appears to do a very good job of sticking to Ito’s... Continue reading…
Meta sues surveillance company for scraping data with fake Facebook accounts
Meta claims to have disabled over 60,000 fake Facebook and Instagram accounts used by Voyager Labs. | Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge Meta has filed a legal complaint against a company for allegedly creating tens of thousands of fake Facebook accounts to scrape user data and provide surveillance services for clients. The firm, Voyager Labs, bills itself as “a world leader in advanced AI-based investigation solutions.” What this means in practice is analyzing social media posts en masse in order to make claims about individuals. In 2021, for example, The Guardian reported how Voyager Labs sold its services to the Los Angeles Police Department, with the company claiming to predict which individuals were likely to commit crimes in the future.Voyager Labs is accused of creating over 38,000 fake Facebook user accounts to scrape dataMeta announced the legal action in a... Microsoft investigating Windows Start menu and taskbar shortcuts disappearing
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Microsoft says it’s investigating an issue in Windows that is causing application shortcuts in the Start menu or taskbar to disappear. Multiple IT admins have detailed the problem on Twitter and Reddit this morning, and it appears to be related to a recent update to the Microsoft Defender threat detections. The problem is affecting businesses and organizations using Microsoft 365 and Defender for protection against malware, viruses, and other threats. In a note to customers, Microsoft says it has received reports that a certain attack surface reduction (ASR) rule is causing the problems. IT admins are currently trying to work around the issue by setting the “Block Win32 API calls from Office macro” rule to audit only.

The system was already known to host one planet, called TOI 700 d, in the habitable zone, but recent research that will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters reveals it is joined by another planet inside its orbit. The other two planets in the system, TOI 700 b and TOI 700 c, orbit closer to the star and, as such, are likely to have higher temperatures, putting them outside of the habitable zone. The new planet “is nestled in there between planets... Tesla has also cut prices for its Model X and Model S in the US. Nvidia Broadcast can now deepfake your eyes to make you look at the camera

Tim Cook takes a $35 million pay cut that he recommended
He’s still set to make a lot of money, though. | Photo by Kevin Mazur / Getty Images Apple CEO Tim Cook is taking a big pay cut — at his own recommendation. Cook’s target compensation will be decreasing by $35 million, according to a new regulatory filing, dropping from $84 million in 2022 to $49 million in 2023. That’s a drop of more than 40 percent. The changes come entirely from an adjustment in his equity award value, which makes up the bulk of Cook’s total compensation. In 2022, that value was estimated to be worth $75 million, but this year, that estimate drops to $40 million. His base salary of $3 million and his annual cash incentive of $6 million will remain the same. Bloomberg reported the pay cut earlier on Thursday. To set Cook’s new pay, the compensation committee on Apple’s board “balanced shareholder... Continue reading…

Electric air dusters rock
My tool. My friend. My electric air duster. | Photo by Christopher Person / The Verge I have always had a complicated relationship with canned compressed air. For a neat freak, it’s a vital tool. It’s an invaluable tool, an ally — heck, even a friend. But the waste!I’m not trying to be a cheapskate here, but a can of compressed air costs like five bucks, and I got air at home. In a new blog on the Unity developer tools website, Marvel Snap associate design director Kent-Erik Hagman wrote about what players can expect when Battle Mode is planned to launch on January 31st.Marvel Snap’s Battle Mode will work a bit like a standard match with one critical change — instead of wagering for cubes that can be won, you’re betting with your health. Each player starts with 10 health, and at the end of the match, the winner deals the amount of wagered health as damage. Hagman wasn’t clear if betting health will work the same way as betting cubes, so we don’t yet know if wagers... Continue reading…
Upgrading the Skagen Falster 6 to Wear OS 3 removes a bunch of watchfaces
The Wear OS 3 update is rolling out to Skagen Gen 6 owners. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge Fossil has started rolling out the Wear OS 3 update to its Skagen Falster Gen 6 smartwatches. The only catch is that doing so removes many watchfaces that were previously available — yet another factor you’ll have to weigh when deciding whether to upgrade to Wear OS 3.The disappearing watchfaces were first noted on Reddit (via 9to5Google), and The Verge was able to confirm that the number of available Skagen watchfaces dwindles from roughly 20 to 5 once you upgrade. This might not faze some people, but fashion is one of Fossil’s strengths as a smartwatch maker, so it’s a little disappointing to see.Otherwise, Wear OS 3 on the Falster Gen 6 is very similar to what you’ll find on Fossil’s newly released Gen 6 Wellness Edition. Congress says the Army can’t spend $400 million buying Microsoft HoloLens headsets
A soldier wearing an IVAS headset. | Image: US Army Congress has denied the Army’s request to buy up to 6,900 headsets based on Microsoft’s HoloLens technology, according to a report from Bloomberg. The military was apparently asking for around $400 million — instead, it’s getting around a tenth of that to go toward improving the system, as previous versions reportedly caused “mission-affecting physical impairments,” such as headaches and nausea during tests. It was those results that reportedly led to the budget for new headsets, called Integrated Visual Augmentation Systems or IVAS by the Army, not being included in the government’s $1.75 trillion spending bill. How to turn off chat features on an Android phone
Switching phones? Here’s how to make sure you keep getting all of your texts. | Image: Samar Haddad; Allison Johnson / The Verge If you recently switched from an Android phone to an iPhone and suddenly stopped receiving texts from your Android phone-owning friends, don’t panic. It’s a nerve-racking but easily solvable problem, and it’s one that we’re all too familiar with at The Verge since some of us tend to switch phones a lot.The likely culprit is the protocol called RCS, which is short for Rich Communication Services. There are a lot of reasons to like RCS in Google’s Messaging app. It provides read receipts and emoji reactions and enables higher-quality media sharing than the older SMS protocol it replaces. But as much as Google would like it to be, RCS isn’t a universal standard — Apple uses its own iMessage protocol, so if you’re switching between Android... Continue reading…

Intel breaks the 6GHz barrier with $699 Core i9-13900KS processor
Intel’s latest 13th Gen CPU breaks the 6GHz barrier. | Image: Intel Intel is launching its fastest desktop processor to date, breaking the 6GHz barrier at stock speeds for the first time. The new Core i9-13900KS is based on the 13th Gen Core i9-13900K that came close to the 6GHz barrier with its 5.8GHz turbo frequency last year. The new i9-13900KS will be available in stores today, priced at $699.The 13900KS is the first CPU to reach 6GHz without overclocking, using Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost technology to reach that 6GHz barrier and improve PC gaming performance. It does it by using more electricity, though. The base power of the 13900K was 125 watts, and Intel has bumped this up to 150 watts on the 13900KS. At max turbo power, it will hit slightly above 250 watts — just like the 13900K.Other... Continue reading…
