Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is the only movie that treats Batman like a complete person
Liking Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a bit like being someone who is super into vinyl. Tell people it’s your favorite movie take on Batman, and you run the risk of sounding like an incredible snob; a contrarian that somehow feels the need to like something other than a bunch of very good live-action movies that lots of other people adore. Regardless, it’s a movie worth celebrating — not because it is better than its live-action siblings, but because it’s maybe the most complete take on Batman and Bruce Wayne on film.Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, now on Netflix, was an attempt to leverage the Emmy-winning success of Batman: The Animated Series into a theatrical hit. It didn’t quite take, bombing at the box office despite critical... Continue reading…

Verizon adds broadband customers, but revenue dips amid slower device sales
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Verizon added 173,000 postpaid phone customers and 287,000 postpaid smartphone customers in the second quarter, even as it lost 81,000 consumer Fios TV subscribers, the company reported Friday. But it saw a net gain of 10,000 consumer Fios broadband subscribers, even though it had to suspend many in-home installations because of pandemic restrictions. The Keep Americans Connected Pledge — waiving late fees and promising not to cut off service for customers who couldn’t pay during the pandemic — ended on June 30th, but Verizon CFO Matt Ellis said a third of customers were current on their bills at the end of June, and 80 percent of its wireless customers have been making at least some payments.“We’re encouraged by what we’ve seen, and... T-Mobile will reportedly dump some phones from its network — and even sooner than AT&T
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Remember when AT&T told customers their phones would stop working and encouraged them to buy new ones during a pandemic? T-Mobile is reportedly going to be sending out some messages like that too, but it seems like the company could be going about it a little differently (and hopefully less aggressively) than AT&T, according to an apparent internal document from T-Mobile shared by Android Police.T-Mobile will reportedly require phones on its network to support voice over LTE (VoLTE) starting in January 2021. That means if your phone doesn’t currently support VoLTE, you’ll need to upgrade if you want to be able to keep making calls with that phone on T-Mobile. And T-Mobile is apparently so intent on phasing out older technologies that... Continue reading…

Intel’s next-gen 7nm chips are delayed until at least 2022
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Intel finally got its 10nm chips on the market after years of delays, but now the company has announced that it’s encountered issues with its upcoming 7nm process that will result in delays for the next generation of chips, too.As Intel’s Q2 2020 earnings release notes, “the company’s 7nm-based CPU product timing is shifting approximately six months relative to prior expectations,” pushing them back from an originally planned arrival at the end of 2021. The six-month delay would push that date into at least 2022, if not further, due to what Intel CEO Bob Swan referred to as a “defect mode” in the 7nm process, according to Tom’s Hardware.Intel actually says that the issues with its current 7nm production means that production is... The campaign alleges that screening the texts amounts to suppressing political speech, while carriers fear allowing them will result in fines for violating anti-spam rules. The 2020 election has brought a wave of text messages from across the political spectrum, particularly with the pandemic limiting in-person outreach. Good Sudoku on the iPhone teaches you the beauty of sudoku
Zach Gage was never really interested in sudoku. But that changed when he started watching the Cracking the Cryptic channel on YouTube, where seasoned pros tackle seemingly impossible puzzles, like the “Miracle Sudoku” video that recently went viral. Played at such a high level, he found the ubiquitous puzzle game “beautiful.” Problem was, when he set out to learn how to play, he couldn’t find any mobile apps that allowed for those high-level techniques. So Gage teamed up with designer Jack Schlesinger to make Good Sudoku, which is out today on iOS.“This inspiration for this was really I just wanted to learn sudoku,” Gage says, “and it seemed very hard to do with what was out there.”Over the last few years, Gage has made a habit of... Unlike the last one that focused on third-party titles that will be available during the Series X’s launch window, Microsoft has made it very clear that we should expect to see an extended look at Halo Infinite, and we’ll likely see other first-party games made by Xbox Game Studios. Perhaps that means we’ll see real-time gameplay of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Rare’s Everwild, Psychonauts 2, and maybe even a new Fable game.Additionally, Microsoft has released more than 70 playable demos to let you go hands-on with games coming to Xbox One later this year. How do I watch the Xbox Series X game showcase?
Latest iOS 14 beta offers more evidence of a 5.4-inch iPhone
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge iOS 14’s third beta contains more evidence that Apple has an iPhone with a 5.4-inch display on the way, 9to5Mac reports. The reasoning is a little complicated, so bear with us. 9to5Mac is basing its hunch on iOS’s Display Zoom feature, which you can use to make your phone’s text, buttons, and icons bigger. Display Zoom works by pretending your phone has a smaller physical display, so if you’re using an iPhone 11 Pro Max with a 6.5-inch screen, Display Zoom shows the interface designed for the 5.8-inch display of the iPhone 11 Pro, essentially magnifying the elements.Corroborating previous reports from Ming-Chi Kuo9to5Mac discovered a new smaller resolution in iOS 14 beta 3 that enables Display Zoom for the iPhone X, XS, or 11 Pro for... Getting rid of QAnon won’t be as easy as Twitter might think
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Every tech platform has two policies about what they will allow: the policy that’s written, and the policy that’s enforced. Ideally there would be no gap between these, but in practice it almost can’t be helped. To take one dumb example, the embryonic audio social network Clubhouse posted its first set of community guidelines the other week. One of these rules says “we prohibit the spread of or attempts to spread false information or news.” In theory, this means that only the truth is allowed on Clubhouse. Not a bad policy, really, but when you’re building a network that someday anyone will be able to use to essentially broadcast their phone calls, I imagine that Clubhouse will find it extremely hard to enforce. Of course people will... Continue reading…
