Democrats on defensive to keep narrow majority with Montana and Ohio races as Republicans eye swing statesThe Democrats are fending off a Republican offensive aimed at overturning their tiny majority in the Senate.Retaking control of the US Congress's upper chamber may represent the GOP's best opportunity of success in November's election, according to analysts, surpassing their chances of retaking the White House or even retaining control of the House of Representatives. Biology can play a role in how girls and boys behave. But it's parents who turn small differences into big onesAccording to the internet, I'm a boy mum". It's not a term I'd heard until I gave birth to a baby boy. Suddenly, I was being bombarded with videos about the nightmare in store for me. This was footage showing the kind of destructive male-toddler behaviour that Jackass stars Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera would deem too risky. Meanwhile, their mothers were portrayed as longsuffering, harried, hard-as-nails veterans of the boy-toddler insane asylum. My son is very physically active, but he's also a gentle, cautious child, so this doesn't resonate with me, or with several of the boy mums" I know. (Meanwhile, some of the girl mums" spend their days chasing their Tasmanian Devil-esque daughters like they're in a Looney Tunes cartoon.) Yet it's everywhere. Then, last week, I saw a report that found girls were playing outside less than boys, even at two years old - something that shocked the researchers, who hadn't expected to see socialised gender roles emerging so early.Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...

Miami raced to the highest points total in league history this season. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything in knockout matchesIf last season was defined by Lionel Messi, this one was about Inter Miami as a whole. The club built the plane as they were flying it, stretching the MLS rulebook to its absolute limit as it added players, shedded others, and ended the season with the best-ever points total in league history. Big spending and sporting success haven't usually gone hand-in-hand in MLS, but 2024 was the year that Miami showed that era is well and truly over. AA Continue reading...

It's west coast v east coast as LA and New York prepare to do battle. Our writers have their say on Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and the restThe same as always: whoever's playing the Yankees. The Evil Empire may technically be marginal underdogs (48% chance of winning) with the bookmakers but are you really going to root for the team that already has 27 of these things? While it's likely Labour did nothing illegal in assisting its politicos to volunteer for Harris, it's yet another issue that was easily avoidableGordon Brown famously brought his moral compass to the prime ministership. Boris Johnson, notoriously, did not. Under Keir Starmer, there is a moral compass in Downing Street once more. But something else has gone missing. Too often, Labour now seems to lack not a moral compass, but a fully functioning political one. It has never needed one more than it does today.Recent history suggests that any government's political compass is a powerful embodiment of its survival instinct. The compass addresses the dangers, as well as the attractions, of a course of action. It recognises that the way an action will be portrayed is a reality as powerful as the intention behind it. It prioritises grip, speed and proactive flair, as well as discipline about priorities.Martin Kettle is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...
Bruce Springsteen urged voters to back Kamala Harris in the presidential election, warning that Donald Trump was running to become 'an American tyrant'. 'I want a president who reveres the constitution, who does not threaten but wants to protect and guide our great democracy, who believes in the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power, who will fight for a woman's right to choose, and who wants to create a middle-class economy that will serve all our citizens,' said Springsteen
Tyler Perry recounts how he once booked a room in the Trump Hotel since the businessman seemed so revered in rap lyrics. 'I wanted to feel that specialness,' Perry said. However after later doing some research on the man, Perry realized the kind of person Trump really is, he said. 'What I realized is that in this Donald Trump America, there is no dream that looks like me.'

The former Fox host once said he hated the ex-president. Now his display of serious daddy issues is striking a terrifying chordWelcome to another normal day in Magaland. The sun is shining, the leaves are falling, and the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson is fantasizing about daddy" Donald Trump spanking teenage girls. This fresh hell comes via Duluth, Georgia, where Carlson was warming up a Trump rally on Wednesday night. Which is notable in itself because Carlson hasn't always been a big fan of the former president. Last year a bunch of Carlson's private text messages were made public as part of the $1.6bn defamation lawsuit filed against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems and they made his real feelings about Trump very clear. There is nothing wrong with foreign volunteers working for Kamala Harris, providing they do it openly and stick to the rulesYou can say that the evidence of Labour volunteers dipping into America's election to campaign for Kamala Harris may not do the Labour government's diplomatic interests any favours if Donald Trump wins. You can add that the intervention has not been very competently overseen, either legally or politically. You can even point out that proud citizensof a selfgoverning republic may not take kindly to being told how to vote by visitors from whatwas once the colonial power. But it is, at worst, a mistake, not a crime. In principle, there is nothing wrong in Labour activists volunteering for the Harris presidential campaign. US elections are the most publicised and consequential on the planet. They affect and capture the interest of millions around the world, not just America. Providing the volunteers observe the rules, and bring self-awareness to what can be a delicate role, their participation, as long as it is public and at the margins, is a tribute to American democracy, not a threat.Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Joe Biden's unwavering support enables Benjamin Netanyahu to prolong the conflict and prioritize his own political survivalThe US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, arrived in Israel on Tuesday to ostensibly plead with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to accept a ceasefire in Gaza and end a widening regional war. Blinken and other US officials have made this appeal many times in recent months, only to be ignored by the Israeli premier, who has instead set about destroying swaths of Lebanon. On this visit, Blinken urged Netanyahu to use the recent killing of Hamas's leader, Yahya Sinwar, in Gaza as an opening to declare victory and wind down Israel's war.Sinwar's killing, in a surprise encounter with Israeli troops last week, should have created new momentum for a ceasefire agreement that would lead to a regional de-escalation and the release of dozens of hostages still being held by Hamas after its 7 October attack on Israel. But Joe Biden has already squandered this opportunity by sending Blinken to deliver a weak lecture to Netanyahu, and refusing to pressure Israel to accept a truce. Continue reading...
I'm usually opposed to replacing words when an artist covers a song - but there is room in my heart for satisfying revengeI can't hold a tune to save my life, so I don't know for sure, but I imagine there are a few things that strike fear into the heart of singers. Losing their precious voice, for one. Not getting enough attention (can't relate). And then there is ... Kelly Clarkson covering your song.A practice that began when she was touring, taking cover requests from fans, Kelly Clarkson now has a daytime talkshow in which every episode she does Kellyoke and covers a song she loves. Why, you might ask? It's simple - because she can, and also she should. She's amazing at it. I'm not saying every time she does a cover she makes it her own, but she definitely shows everyone what your song sounds like when it's belted by one of our greatest living singers. Amid a mysterious FBI investigation and a Silicon Valley-funded recall, Thao is seeking to reassure voters that the city is getting betterThe Oakland mayor, Sheng Thao's political rise was precarious from the start. For progressives, her narrow victory in 2022 affirmed their city's radical, leftist roots. By electing a daughter of Hmong refugees and a domestic violence survivor who promised to advocate for the city's most vulnerable residents, it seemed Oakland had defied the tech billionaires and venture capitalists who were working to transform the political landscape in neighbouring San Francisco. Two big names had a shaky week, while Milan have found their Mr Reliable. We hand out honours (and dishonours) from the latest round of actionVFB Stuttgart: In last season's Bundesliga it was Stuttgart rather than Bayern Munich who came second to the unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen. Following that up this season has proved tough for Sebastian Hoeness's team, who lie 10th in the German league. On Tuesday night in Turin they dominated Juventus, who put in their worst performance yet under Thiago Motta, and were reduced to 10 men after Danilo's red card. Deniz Undav's first-half screamer for Stuttgart was rubbed out by the VAR but it seemed Mattia Perin, who saved Enzo Millot's penalty amid a brilliant goalkeeping display, would deny the Germans. It took some dainty improvisation from El Bilal Toure to land a first Champions League win this season for a club back in the competition for the first time in 15 years. Continue reading...

The far right is looking very different to how it did a few years ago. They're less tied to traditional conservative organizationsThis Tuesday, Charlie Kirk brought his You're Being Brainwashed Tour to the campus of my public university in a Republican-controlled state. It was nothing like the last time Kirk and his Turning Point USA (TPUSA) organization had visited. Although the different timing matters - this was literally two weeks before election day - the differences between the 2018 and 2024 events in many ways reflect the dangerous radicalization of the US right wing.In 2018, Kirk had a fairly similar agenda when coming to my university: exposing leftist lies and progressive propaganda" at US universities. I wrote a column about the rather bland event, describing it as a rightwing safe space", in which Kirk railed against the cultural Marxists". Most students seemed more amused than aggrieved. How different this week's event was. Continue reading...
