Earth’s tipping points could be closer than we think. Our current plans won’t work | George Monbiot
Climate policies commit us to a calamitous 2.9C of global heating, but catastrophic changes can occur at even 1.5C or 2CIf there’s one thing we know about climate breakdown, it’s that it will not be linear, smooth or gradual. Just as one continental plate might push beneath another in sudden fits and starts, causing periodic earthquakes and tsunamis, our atmospheric systems will absorb the stress for a while, then suddenly shift. Yet, everywhere, the programmes designed to avert it are linear, smooth and gradual.Current plans to avoid catastrophe would work in a simple system like a washbasin, in which you can close the tap until the inflow is less than the outflow. But they are less likely to work in complex systems, such as the atmosphere, oceans and biosphere. Complex systems seek equilibrium. When they are pushed too far out of one equilibrium state, they can flip suddenly into another. A common property of complex systems is that it’s much easier to push them past a tipping point than to push them back. Once a transition has happened, it cannot realistically be reversed. They were spotted in homes, at gas stations and outside grocery stores. The White House has confirmed that Trump appointees to military service academy advisory boards, among them former press secretary Sean Spicer and adviser Kellyanne Conway, have been asked to step down or be fired. During a White House press briefing Jen Psaki responded to questions about whether this risked politicising these appointments: 'I will let others evaluate whether they think Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer and others were qualified, or not political, to serve on these boards, but the president’s qualification requirements are not your party registration, they are whether you’re qualified to serve and whether you’re aligned with the values of this administration.'
Jen Psaki mocks Texas governor's pledge to 'eliminate' rape amid criticism of abortion ban – video
White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked for her response to Texas governor Greg Abbott’s latest defense of the six-week abortion ban in his state. Abbott pledged to 'eliminate all rapists from the streets of Texas' when he was asked why rape and incest victims should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term. Psaki said in response: 'If governor Abbott has a means of eliminating all rapists or all rape from the US then there’d be bipartisan support for that'. She went on to say that no leader in the history of the world has been able to eliminate rape and that is one of the many reasons that women in Texas should have access to safe abortions through their healthcare.

One day there was bad traffic getting in, because of the hurricane the night before, and yeah, I was saying to my coach, ‘It’s OK if I miss the practice’ ... and they were all like: ‘What do you mean if we’ve missed practice!’ But I trust myself, and it’s all mental at the end of the day.” Continue reading...

There’s a straight line from US racial segregation to the anti-abortion movement | Randall Balmer
Leaders of the religious right would have us believe that Roe v Wade mobilized apolitical Christians. The real story is very differentThe supreme court’s refusal to block Texas’s restrictive new abortion law suggests that the end to country-wide legal abortion might be at hand. For white evangelicals, the rank and file of the anti-abortion movement who have worked tirelessly to overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade decision, this represents the culmination of efforts that date back to – well, about 1980.Although leaders of the religious right would have us believe that the Roe decision was the catalyst for their political mobilization in the 1970s, that claim does not withstand historical scrutiny. What prompted evangelical interest in politics, in fact, was a defense of racial segregation. Continue reading...

Alana McLaughlin’s journey from US special forces to trans MMA fighter | Loretta Hunt

Alana McLaughlin learned that isn’t always the case when she was sitting in her dorm room at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 2003. The 20-year-old had done everything her parents wanted, faithfully attending every conversion program they’d asked her to for over a decade. She couldn’t sit through one more.McLaughlin’s mother wouldn’t even say the word “transition”, although gender reassignment was something Alana had asked for from a young age. It had never been an option, no matter how many times she asked for it and no matter how many conversion schools she attended. Over the phone, there was silence. Emma Raducanu enjoying the moment before US Open quarter-final | Tumaini Carayol
The 18-year-old is ‘super-appreciative’ as she prepares to face Belinda Bencic in the US Open quarter-finalsOne of the greatest cramming sessions of the year continues. Emma Raducanu began her full-time senior career before Wimbledon with no experience at the very top level of professional tennis, but with every match she plays across this delirious summer, she is learning new information and improving each time. Now 26 matches later, she is a US Open quarter-finalist. She has already grown as much in 10 weeks as some players do in years, and she only wants more. The breakout performances from other teens in New York offer a helpful reference point for Raducanu’s inexperience and why the most remarkable part of her story is not that she is just 18 and recently received her A-levels. Leylah Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, is only two months older than Raducanu, and reached the semi-finals on Tuesday, made her tour-level debut in 2018 and her steady growth has been easy to follow across the 34 tour-level tournaments she has played since. Raducanu has played four: Nottingham, Wimbledon, San Diego and the US Open. Continue reading...
Biden vowed to make racial justice the heart of his agenda – is it still beating?

In statehouses across the country, Republicans are proposing – and passing – new voter restrictions that activists say amount to the greatest erosion of voting rights since the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965, a crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. Melania Trump isn’t keen on Donald running in 2024 –but that won’t stop him | Arwa Mahdawi
The former president is thinking about standing again. While I’d love to laugh at the idea of him winning a second time, the polls offer a heavy note of cautionSay what you like about Melania Trump, the woman is consistent. She displayed zero interest in being first lady in 2016, and it seems she has zero interest in being first lady ever again. According to mysterious sources who recently spoke to CNN about Melania’s mindset, she has no desire to ever return to the White House. Should her bitter half decide he wants to prove the losers and haters wrong and run for president in 2024, she won’t be accompanying him on the campaign trail. Instead, CNN reports, one of his adult sons’ partners will probably do the honours.Could Donald Trump really run for president again? Is the white population in the US really ‘shrinking’? | Allison Plyer and Joseph Salvo
Increasing numbers of Americans identify as more than one race. But that’s not the same as white population declineThe Census Bureau released the first detailed results of the 2020 census this month, and many media reports highlighted the nation’s growing diversity, which is real, and the dramatically shrinking white population, which is … not so much.First the data: The white population didn’t “shrink” to 57.8% as widely reported – unless you believe in the old “one-drop” rule, where one ancestor of another race means you are not fully and authentically accepted as white. Moreover, this statistic excludes people who checked the Hispanic box, many of whom identify as ethnically Hispanic but racially white. Continue reading...
