One of the game's most impressive careers appears to be nearing its end.

New Jersey Devils forward Patrik Elias will be out indefinitely after undergoing a successful arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, the team announced Tuesday.

There is currently no timetable for his return.

In a statement, Devils GM Ray Shero said "We are optimistic that Patrik will return this season"

Elias, who turns 40 in April, is in the final year of a 3-year, $16.5-million contract. Although the Devils are optimistic that he can return this season, the injury raises doubts regarding the future of his career.

The 39-year-old forward has struggled this season, recording one goal and four assists in 13 games. He has talied 1,022 points in 1,237 career games, all of which have come with the Devils.
