The Charlotte Checkers - the Carolina Hurricanes' AHL affiliate - took on the Chicago Wolves in front of an empty arena Friday, as severe weather conditions forced the teams to close the game to the public.

The Hurricanes are also playing a few hours east, in Raleigh, N.C., despite heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, the NHL cancelled Friday's game between the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals entirely.
