First the coach's challenge, now a wild-card play-in game?

Bob McKenzie reported Wednesday on NBC that 16-of-28 general managers polled would be in favor of the NHL borrowing another idea, and adopting an MLB-style single elimination play-in game to determine the final wild-card seed in each conference.

It's nothing more than a concept, obviously, something that would have to be presented to the league, scrutinized, and eventually voted on. However, according to McKenzie's survey, expanding the grueling two-month playoffs is an idea most GMs would already green light.

He notes that of the 11 executives that voted against the single-elimination format, five did so because they actually preferred a best-of-three series to determine all four wild-card spots.

For this to happen down the line, the league must convince the NHLPA, which is actively campaigning to earn the players more in-season rest.
