Columbus Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson changed one family's life forever when he scored a hat trick against the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 25.

Nine-year-old Maddie Wright - in attendance on her birthday - created a sign that said, "Dad says if 13 scores on my Birthday we get a dog." Atkinson delivered three times, and Maddie's father did not go back on his word.

The Wright's picked out a rescue dog from the Delaware County Humane Society shortly thereafter, and decided to name the newest member of their family after Maddie's favorite goal scorer.

Both Cams had an opportunity to meet for the first time Monday.

Atkinson was thrilled about spending the day with his new friend, getting a first-hand look at the impact Cam (the dog) has had on the Wright family's life.

"That's what it's all about," Atkinson said. "I feel like with dogs, you come home and they're your best friend. It doesn't matter what kind of day you're having, if you're having a bad day or good day, they're always there to greet you with a smile and always make your day better."

The 26-year-old is enjoying a solid campaign for Columbus, primed for career highs with 19 goals and 18 assists in 56 games. After today's meeting, three of those goals will certainly stand out more than the others.
