VimpelCom pays $835m to US and Dutch over Uzbekistan telecoms bribes

The Russian-owned firm was charged with paying huge kickbacks to a relative of dictator Islam Karimov in order to access the country's mobile market

VimpelCom, the Amsterdam-based telecoms company, has agreed to pay $835m to settle US and Dutch charges that it paid massive bribes to enter the Uzbekistan telecommunications market, the US justice department has said.
