Episode 686: If Elected President

by
from NPR: Planet Money on (#159NT)
Listen 20:31

Candidates can promise almost anything in a presidential campaign: Free puppies! Everyone gets a jet pack! A lot of it won't actually happen. But today, we put practical concerns aside, and imagine a world in which the candidates' promises actually come true. A world where college is free, and there's no more IRS.

Would you want to live there? To help you decide, we surveyed 22 economists about the candidates' promises. You can find the full results of that survey here. We chose our economists from among the panelists at the University of Chicago Booth School's IGM Economic Experts Panel.

Throughout the episode you'll hear vignettes from the future that we cooked up in partnership with Rose Eveleth, creator of Flash Forward, a podcast about the future. Each week she imagines a possible future scenario, like what would happen if we killed all the mosquitoes, or if space pirates dragged a second moon to earth. Listen to Flash Forward here!
