by Tom Fucoloro from Seattle Bike Blog on (#1GAT9)
It's time for the Bike News Roundup! Lots of good stuff floating around the web lately, so let's get right to it.
First up, Vox created a short and punchy video report outlining "how highways wrecked American cities." Definitely worth the 4:38:

As someone who has been to many different neighborhood councils, associations and clubs, Mike McGinn's analysis here is spot on. - Expedia tackles sticky issue of commute at future Seattle campus | The Seattle Times - Though not mentioned in this story, the EIS predicts about 5% of employees will bike when the campus opens, growing to 10% over the next decade and a half. Honestly, I think they can aim higher than that since the Elliott Bay Trail will connect through the downtown waterfront in the next couple years (assuming no more big Bertha delays, of course). The Ballard Bridge will remain a major hurdle, though.

- It's No Accident: Advocates Want to Speak of Car 'Crashes' Instead - The New York Times - Really great story on the history of using the word "accident." It was purposefully adopted by the auto industry, inspired by factories trying to distance themselves from worker injuries by putting the responsibility on the worker to prevent an "accident." In other words, it was no accident that everyone uses the term now to describe any time a car runs into a thing or a person.

- This Is a Bad Sign | Music Blog | St. Louis News and Events | Riverfront Times - Seattle knows this sign well. Another city injures a bunch of people on bikes by installing streetcar tracks. This time it's my hometown, and this is one of the most bustling and lively commercial streets in the region (in other words, the exact place you'd expect a lot of people to bike).
