Report: NFL dropping 'probable' injury designation

The NFL is getting rid of the "probable" injury designation this season, reports the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.

The designation was used to classify players who had suffered an injury, but were still "very likely to start in the upcoming week."

It's almost unheard of for a player to be designated as "probable" and miss the game, making it an easy term to throw out of the rulebook. The change could create uncertainty as players with the slightest of injuries could now be listed as "questionable."

The New England Patriots, among other teams, have built a reputation of pushing the limits of the injury designation, regularly listing players as "probable" or "questionable" with clearly playable injuries.

Assuming no other changes to the designation system, injured players will be classified as either "questionable," "doubtful," "out," or "inactive" on the injury report prior to games this season.
