Modern nationalism valorizes a people's deep, primordial relationship with land, however, for much of Western history claiming foreign ancestry was the key to political legitimacy. By challenging accounts of history that pit virtuous natives against dangerous outsiders, historians promote more inclusive understandings of identity and more open immigration policies.
