The Southern Slave Economy Was Anti-Capitalistic

Some economists have suggested that the Southern economy was mostly capitalistic despite being largely based on slave labor. To what extent are these conclusions accurate? Was capitalism the main cause of the economic, political, and social backwardness in the Antebellum South?
