New York Jets first-round pick Jamal Adams sprained his ankle during Thursday's practice, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters, according to Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News.

Bowles added that the severity of the ailment is not yet known, but that an MRI will not be required.

Adams being forced to miss any sort of extended action would, of course, be a major loss for a Jets secondary that was already thought to be an area of concern heading into 2017.

As a rare safety who was considered a consensus top-10 draft talent, Adams joined the Jets with the expectation that he'd quickly emerge as a foundation piece for the ongoing rebuild.

He earned first-team All-SEC honors after tallying 76 tackles - 7.5 for a loss - and one interception during his third and final season at LSU.
